Aimee and Ted and the special guests were funny and the music was great
This is the second time seeing Aimee Mann’s Christmas Show with Ted Leo and it was just as fabulous as the first one we attended nine years ago. The banter between the guest performers and story laced between songs and segments make this a great way to kick off the holidays.
Everything about this show was a pure delight — Aimee and Ted were in fine voice, Nellie McKay is a revelation, Paul F. Tompkins is a national treasure and Josh Gondelman was hilarious. I only wish I'd bought a ticket for the second night, partly because I want to know how much is scripted and how much is ad-libbed.
I've long been a fan of Aimee Mann, but this was my first time seeing her and her band in concert. She played The Fillmore in San Francisco on 11/3/24 and 11/4/24, and although I had initially planned on attending with my wife only on Sunday 11/3, I also went back on my own on Monday 11/4 to see the show again. That's how good it was. Aimee initially came out on stage to accompany the opening act, Jonathan Coulton, on a couple of songs, and then 15 minutes after his show ended, she came out with her band to do her set. I love a full band sound - drums, electric guitar, bass, keyboard, backing vocals, and the main vocalist/guitarist - and that was the setup Aimee has on this tour. With the full band, you get to hear the songs fully formed, just as you known them on her albums. She did a great set of about an hour and twenty minutes, featuring songs from as far back as her first album, all the way to her latest. Standout songs in this set were "Fifty Years After the Fair", "You Never Loved Me", "Patient Zero", "The Moth", "Save Me", "I Can't Help You Anymore", and "Sugarcoated", but really, every song was so well performed and the sound level was so good that I was fully into every single song. She did just the right amount of talking to the audience, but mostly focused on the music, which was so expertly executed. This woman is a pro, and exudes a natural quality that is cool, down to earth, relaxed, confident, and fun all at the same time. So glad I didn't miss this show, and that I got to see it twice!
Cross this off my bucket list! I finally got to see Aimee Mann in concert! Opening for Aimee was Jonathan Coulton, who has written and performed with Aimee for years, and is a master songsmith in his own right. He's also super funny and his rapport with Mann is off the charts. Aimee joined Jonathan for his set for a few songs and then he returned the favor for her in her set. Aimee was in fine voice and played a solid set of "hits"and deeper cuts. I was bummed that she didn't play "Wise Up"from the Magnolia soundtrack but that is minor quibbling.
Aimee was more charming than usual, though her display of dominance over Jonathan Coulton was slightly cringe. Her lovely ethereal voice has not faded, one of the great pop singers just below a Smokey Robinson. Her lyrics since Charmer don't have the same high level of poetry, maybe the best in the business until then, and of course she loves the new songs. And the drums were too loud against the lyrics and especially the guitar. Still it was magic, spellbinding as they say. She is the only celebrity I love in my heart, and it's a such a pleasure to watch her perform. And the bass player is an excellent vocalist as well, some nice harmonies.
I've been of fan of Miss Mann's for several years and was excited to finally see her perform live, especially in a cool venue like the 9:30 Club. It was a good show-- while it lasted. She only played about 1 hour, 20 minutes. She also didn't play "Wise Up,"a song I love and what I think if her most recognized song as a solo artist. Some fans even requested it but no matter. That put a little damper on the evening. Wasn't a bad concert by any means and I am glad I saw her but it sure left me wanting more.
I’ve loved her since “Voices Carry” so….Godess?’ Couldn’t
Aimee Mann is at the top of her game — her voice is gorgeous, her band is sharp as knives, and the songs are mind-bending and heart-wrenching. I saw her with Jonathan Coulton at their last Birchmere show, which was also excellent, but I think 9:30 is a better venue for her — the standing audience is more responsive, and it's easier to share the vibe. I saw her in Philadelphia the night after this show, opening for Jason Isbell, and while she was great there, too, I'm glad I got to see her as a headliner.
Most of her songs are soft acoustic type performances yet the bass and drums are drowning out the songs… sounds ok on the louder rock songs but distracting during the others.
This is the fifth time I have seen her live and each time it gets better! she is just fantastic!
Terrific show, great sound. Aimee’s band was excellent. Opening act was fun and Aimee joined hin for a couple of songs. Very good setlist. Only wish they played longer.
She is such a great songwriter. It was fun to see perform and we werevlucky enough to be in the front.
Aimee Mann is arguably one of the finest singers and songwriters working today, and her music in this concert was wonderful, as always. Ditto Jonathan Coulton, whose songs are both witty and empathetic, and whose solo and harmony singing is superb. The setlist for Ms. Mann ranged from early solo work to her latest, all done with the grace, humor, and musicianship she has shown for decades. Alas, the venue. Just awful. I had to take at least one star off because there were too many things to ignore - for example, the official venue site saying that the concert would start at eight, but actually starting with Jonathan Coulton at 7:45. (Very disrespectful to Mr. Coulton.) There was absolutely no point to having General Admission for two performers whose music is decidedly not danceable. I ended up in the front of the Loge, as a disabled woman who uses a cane, having to climb stairs and use said cane while balancing a glass of wine - only to realize that the performers were so far away that I should have brought binoculars. Having 50 people or so standing directly at the stage was distracting, to say the least. The seating and general upkeep of the Loge left a lot to be desired - such as basic cleanliness. Loud-ish songs in Aimee's set sounded awful because there is no way to baffle sound in this hard-edged and hideous venue, distorting the music to the point of pain. As for what passed for "accessible"seating: it was at the rear of the General Admission section, leaving the people sitting there with no sightlines to speak of to the stage. Aimee and Jonathan - wonderful, both - deserve far better.
Aimee Mann's voice hasn't changed a bit in the decades since her first albums. Fantastic show and the sound was amazing at this venue. Wish she'd include more of her older solo stuff off the first three albums, but well worth the price of a ticket for sure. Always entertaining, and her band are all top-notch.
Aimee Mann put on a great performance as always. Her voice was amazing as always with a wide variety of her work. Cant wait to see her again.
I’ve been to many Aimee Mann shows over the years. This was my first GA experience- and it did not disappoint. Very small venue - not packed - so we were able to stand 3 feet away from her, take great photos and enjoy her music and wit from wayyy up close. Her set list was interesting. She did not do Deathly as her encore. That’s a first. Had a really nice time- and was home in 30 minutes. 😊
Aimee covered the breath of her entire catalogue in an amazing performance. She was in great form and her band— including Jonathon Coulton- was artful in bringing her songs to life. I think she is one of America’s greatest talents, with a song catalogue that will definitely stand the test of time.
No Voices Carry??! She's so talented, with a voice as clear as a bell. Great writing, great musicians. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. But no Voices Carry??? Aimee, how could you? Some of us were prepared to act out the video...
Amazing show - been a huge fan of Aimee since seeing ‘Til Tuesday in the 80’s in Boston. Huge shoutout to bassist Paul Bryan for “requesting” Other End of the Telescope!!!! Thank you! Went into the night not expecting to hear any ‘Til Tuesday songs and for Aimee and the band to play this was amazing! A great show overall - don’t miss it!
