    Amazingly Entertaining

    by 31B40 on 8/6/13Warner Theatre - Washington

When I first reviewed it on the internet I knew I had to go and see this show. I was not disappointed. From the opening to the finale it kept you amazed with the energy the performers exerted while dancing and singing. You could not help from getting in the mood. It was also a learning experience of what they must have had to endure surviving in their country during hard times and how they used their music to help overcome the adversities. It was very moving. Should the group make another tour here again, I would without a doubt recommend my family and friends to make an effort to attend.

    Memorable narration and production

by ChrisAlex on 8/6/13Warner Theatre - Washington

The cast was superb, easily transitioning between apartheid era and present day song and dance. The show length was just right giving tremendous value for money paid. Highly recommended.

It was a great show! It was energetic, inspiring, and sexy! I learned about South Africa's history, the struggle of black people for independence, and how they expressed themselves in song and dance. I learned about the evolution of South African music from the rural areas into the cities and the influence of American music on them. It was educational and entertaining.

    It Filled Up My Senses!

by fazebiz on 8/4/13Warner Theatre - Washington

This intriguing program beat through my senses from the opening to the ending, for the drums' rhythm awakened my senses to man's land of creation - Africa! The music traveled from past to present - what an entertaining education. I wish that I could afford to take all nine of my grands to the show. I hope that school children were able to attend and learn and enjoy! The segment surrounding Nelson Mandela bought tears to my eyes. I did not expect this period to be included, and yet, I should have known that the music of those times would be significant. Wonderful!!!

    Reconcilaition through Music.....What a Concept!!!

    by Dragon6 on 8/4/13Warner Theatre - Washington

This show allowed me to reminisce my time in South Africa. Having traveled the country extensively, this brought back many memories of time spent in a kraal, Soweto, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Johannesburg. Would have loved to have heard the musical and dance distinctions among the Xosha, Zulu and other tribes in South Africa.

So Much Better than Broadway Musicals!

by Keithustus on 8/2/13Warner Theatre - Washington

My wife and I have been to several classic musicals. They're almost all sooooooo boring. We took a chance on Africa Umoja not knowing anything about it other than seeing two minutes of a trailer. Wow, holy crap, it was awesome. The singing is alluring, and the dancing....I felt as amazed as watching the unparalleled prowess of Olympic athletes. There wasn't a large audience when I attended--it was opening night--but the applause and cheering was still deafening. The content of Africa Umoja is very personal and touching. It spans the history of the country of South Africa: the untamed beats and styles of precolonial cultures, the mixing of European and South African flavors, the brief domination of strict gospel music (the only weak part of the show), and the reemergence of African musical identity. Particularly touching is the weaving into the show the fight against injustice, the fight to overcome Apartheid. The show uses displayed video at points, and the jarring contrast between live music and dancing and archival video of oppression and eventual independence makes the later musical portions all the more joyous.

    Was That a DocuMusical?

by UmojaRhythm on 7/31/13Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts - New Orleans

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by the high-energy dancing throughout each chapter of this story about South Africa. It explored the miraculous unraveling of apartheid by following the thread of song. Highly recommended to all.
