About

Extreme alt-rock outfit AFI, short for A Fire Inside, continue to keep their punk rock spirit alive after more than two decades together. The four-piece California band, impressively composed of the same lineup since 1998, has revitalized hardcore punk ever since their 1991 beginning, though the crew didn’t see mainstream success until their 2003 platinum-selling “Sing the Sorrow.”

Since that time, AFI has satiated ticket holders at amped up concerts nationwide, either on their own headlining runs or as part of the Vans Warped Tour on several occasions.

After a four-year recording hiatus, AFI unveiled its ninth studio set, “Burials,” in October 2013. The collection, produced by Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World), peaked at No. 9 on The Billboard 200. Some tracks on the Republic Records release (“17 Crimes” and “I Hope You Suffer” for example) lean more toward hard rock than horror punk or goth-punk, both labels AFI’s received with past work.

The greatest night of my life

by GillMax on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Oh my god. This was the second time I've seen AFI at Newport and I am so happy I could die. There is such incredible meaning behind this band and this venue to me. I went last time with a friend and he passed away last year. I rarely cry, but I am almost in tears now just thinking about the other night and that night a few years ago with Anthony.

    AFI gave an amazing show!

by kahrabella on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

AFI performed the best of their new CD, Crash Love, as well many of their older favorites and nearly-forgotten songs. The band gave it their all, and the crowd gave back. It was a memorable and outstanding show!

    AFI was absolutely AMAZING!!

    by ElDiego08 on 10/5/09EPIC - Minneapolis

AFI's show was amazing! The opening band was Gallows. They were pretty good. When AFI came out, the place went INSANE! It was awesome! Davey came out with this awesome jacket on, but took it off after the first song or two (it was a little hot in the venue). They played so many great songs. They played some tracks form Crash Love, Decemberunderground, Sing the Sorrow, and even played Ny-Quil, a track from Answer That and Stay Fashionable. To top it all off they even played an unreleased track, On the Arrow! It was extra cool because it was the first time in a year and a half that AFI was touring the US, and their first stop was here in Minnesota! Bottom Line: perhaps the greatest show I have ever been to. Most highly reccomended.

    AFI Newport

by HSheppard on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Although Davey isn't the ninja on stage he used to be, the guys still delivered a great show. Jade definitely delivered on the guitar, and Hunter and Adam were no slouches either. The Newport is pretty small, not the smallest venue I've ever been to but the crowd got a bit rowdy on the sunken floor. Which is to be expected, so not a huge deal. They played four or five songs from the new album, but also included was some older works. "Today's Lesson", "The Leaving Song", and "Girls Not Grey" all got some time on stage, which was nice for those of us who don't mind the new AFI, but became fans way before Decemberunderground. And Davey was just as kind with the fans as he's always been, so I consider the show a success. They also did "On the Arrow" which sounds exponentially better in person than the recorded version, and really displayed Davey's vocal range. And The Gallows. I had never heard any of their material before the show, and I'm not sure I like it all that much, but they put on one hell of an opening act. Credit where credits due and all that.

    AFI was forgettable...

by Janesinc on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

If you haven't seen AFI before, please see them. If you have seen AFI before, go to the show just to experience the Gallows. I have seen AFI several times, even traveled to see them, and I was very unimpressed by the set of songs they performed. All new songs, one old song, and that song was off "The Art Of Drowning"....

    Solid Performance & Great Sound!

by Brisso on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

This was a pretty amazing show. Dave had the croud in his pocket and his live vocal performance lacked absolutly nothing. All members of the band put out a high energy solid rock show... The Newport is one of my favorite venues offering a great near stage view from the mezzanine.

Gallows and AFI a perfect match

by Frankieknits on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

I was HIGHLY surprised with the English band Gallows! I had never heard of them, and their devoted fan base really got the show going. AFI, as usual played an amazing set, perfectly mixing the new songs from "Crash Love" with their older songs.

    Best night of my life

by EternalDespair on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Gallows opening performance was wonderful and really got the crowd going. Never saw them live, and it was a great opportunity. AFI's set list was great and it was an awesome surprise to here that they threw in some old songs from VPOY and AOD. Davey put on a fantastic act and despite the fact that the screaming hurts his voice, he screamed loud and hard. Never have i exerted so much energy during a show, and all the sweat, tears, bit marks, and pain was all worth it.

AFI did not play long enough

by species on 10/5/09EPIC - Minneapolis

Considering how far I came, and how much I was looking forward to the show, I was very disappointed by their short performance. I didn't mind that they only had one opening act, but I feel in that case they should have played more than the one hour they were on stage. Other than that, they sounded fab!!

    AFI Rocked Newport

by RandomMrAdam on 10/5/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

    They totally rocked!

by paulfromcalifornia on 10/4/09EPIC - Minneapolis

I've seen AFI 4 times now, dating back to their black heart tour stop in Petaluma, CA in 2002. Every time I have extremely high expectations, and every time they surpass my expectations. Lots of energy and nailed every song. Only negative was the show was short; only one band before them so the whole thing was over by 10:30. Also, I would have liked to have heard them play more songs off older albums, i.e. Total Immortal, Morningstar, Prayer Position. I was very surprised they did not play any of these. Overall though, it was pretty freakin sweet!

    AFI was awsome!

by onesmurph on 10/4/09EPIC - Minneapolis

Opening was the gallows-- I had never heard of them but they put on a good show. The venue was very up close and personal. AFI was fantastic! They sounded great and put on a hell of a show for the crowd. Davey even jumped into the crowd! My only complaint: they didn't play God Called In Sick Today (the classic), and didn't play long enough!

    AFI killed it

by Flagadon on 10/4/09EPIC - Minneapolis

It was their first show on tour, but they came out swinging, so to speak. Things went smoothly, and all the songs sounded good. The crowd was LOUD!!! Sometimes i couldn't even hear Davey Havoc's voice, but i think that added to it. It was one of my favorite shows to date.

    Such an amazing band live!

by Baleyg on 10/4/09EPIC - Minneapolis

This band is one of the best bands I have seen live and I've seen quite a bit of bands. Davey Havok was sporting a cool new look and his vocals were off the chart. The music, the crowd, the buzz, it was all pretty intense. GO SEE THEM NOW!
