About

A Night With Janis Joplin on Tour

Legendary blues belter Janis Joplin passed away in 1970 at the age of 27. A Night With Janis Joplin captures the singer's energy, heart and ability to wring the entire spectrum of human emotions out of a single wail. The musical is structured like a Joplin show from 1970 might be, though there are twists of magical-realism — singers who influenced her like Aretha Franklin and Bessie Smith show up onstage beside her, while her between-song banter gives audiences a hint of the wounded humanity behind her towering voice.

A Night With Janis Joplin Background

Janis Joplin's bellow was one of the defining voices of the 1960s. Solo and with her band Big Brother & the Holding Company, the Texas-born singer (who also went by Pearl) blazed a trail through rock, fusing blues and fuzz-covered guitars in a thrilling way as she dug down and sang of deeply felt pain. She rocketed to fame after a torrid appearance at 1967's storied Monterey Pop Festival, where Big Brother was on the bill alongside performers like Otis Redding, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Who. Joplin's innate knowledge of the blues and powerful voice made her one of the most singular figures of the ‘60s rock scene, and she eventually split from Big Brother in 1969. On October 4, 1970, Joplin died of a heroin overdose, and her final album Pearl came out in January of the following year. A Night With Janis Joplin, which premiered in 2013 at New York City's Lyceum Theatre, brings Joplin's artistry and songcraft to generations of listeners who were too young to experience her live. Written by director and playwright Randy Johnson, whose recent musical about rock pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe Shout Sister Shout! is currently touring the United States, A Night WIth Janis Joplin fuses her unforgettable songs with banter that's witty and ponderous in equal measures, showcasing the woman who made the music so unforgettable.

    Enjoyed it

by Steve Jones on 10/12/19Stifel Theatre - St. Louis

The singer nailed the sound of Janis' voice. It was spooky. The weaving in of her youth and the influences on her singing was creative and spectacular. The performances of the other singers were great too. The performance of Janis' songs was sometimes a bit overwrought, with lopsided focus on the most energetic peaks of her songs, missing some of her subtlety and range. "Ball and Chain" in particular suffered from that, about the only song I was disappointed in the whole show. But that's a bit of a nitpick. It really was thrilling and my wife and I both had a great time.

We were in the presence of Janis! Plain and simple. Her spirit, her passion, her voice - right there in the theatre with us. It was an incredible show and a true tribute to a beautiful, complicated woman.

    Janis

by Brian on 10/9/19Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

More history and blues interpretation than expected. Music volume was exceedingly loud. More appropriate for outdoor than indoor concert. Singer portraying Janis seemed to only scream at some parts of show.

    BEST CAST EVER

by Tiffany on 10/9/19Mystic Lake Casino Hotel - Prior Lake

This show has so many talented singers! Not only is the lead (Mary Bridget Davies) channeling the magic that is Janis Joplin and her vocal wizardry, but the entire cast is spectacular. I've seen it a few times and they always bring down the house. Do not miss this show!

    It was her voice

by Van on 10/8/19Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

The show itself was uplifting. 4 backup singers - (all great) performed songs from Aretha Franklin, The Chantay's, Odetta, Bessie Smith and Nicole Simone. They were integrated to show where Janis received her inspiration, As for the main event (Janis), she was fantastic. Her first song is Tell Mamma. When she bursts onto the stage and starts the song I literally said "Oh My God", that is Janis Joplin's voice. The band itself was very good. Duplicated the Big Brother and the Holding Company sound. If you are a fan of Big Brother and or Janis Joplin - I strongly recommend this show. It can get rather loud, but after the first act, it seems they figured that out and regulated the sound. For a topic that could have been rather dark, the show skillfully touched on some of her bad traits and concentrated on a positive message and uplifting music.
