A Night With Janis Joplin on Tour
Legendary blues belter Janis Joplin passed away in 1970 at the age of 27. A Night With Janis Joplin captures the singer's energy, heart and ability to wring the entire spectrum of human emotions out of a single wail. The musical is structured like a Joplin show from 1970 might be, though there are twists of magical-realism — singers who influenced her like Aretha Franklin and Bessie Smith show up onstage beside her, while her between-song banter gives audiences a hint of the wounded humanity behind her towering voice.
A Night With Janis Joplin Background
Janis Joplin's bellow was one of the defining voices of the 1960s. Solo and with her band Big Brother & the Holding Company, the Texas-born singer (who also went by Pearl) blazed a trail through rock, fusing blues and fuzz-covered guitars in a thrilling way as she dug down and sang of deeply felt pain. She rocketed to fame after a torrid appearance at 1967's storied Monterey Pop Festival, where Big Brother was on the bill alongside performers like Otis Redding, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Who. Joplin's innate knowledge of the blues and powerful voice made her one of the most singular figures of the ‘60s rock scene, and she eventually split from Big Brother in 1969. On October 4, 1970, Joplin died of a heroin overdose, and her final album Pearl came out in January of the following year. A Night With Janis Joplin, which premiered in 2013 at New York City's Lyceum Theatre, brings Joplin's artistry and songcraft to generations of listeners who were too young to experience her live. Written by director and playwright Randy Johnson, whose recent musical about rock pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe Shout Sister Shout! is currently touring the United States, A Night WIth Janis Joplin fuses her unforgettable songs with banter that's witty and ponderous in equal measures, showcasing the woman who made the music so unforgettable.
Mary B Davies gave a stellar performance! Fabulous!! The whole cast was stunning! Highly recommended. Good memories of someone who left us way too soon. Janis definitely had a gift!
The lead actress sang great but much of the dialogue was garbled and difficult to follow. I thought it was me but I talked to another person who attended the 2 pm show and they agreed.
An extraordinary level of talent shoehorned into a tiny stage! The musicians were all great, conveying warmth, humor and personality as appropriate. Janis’ character absolutely nailed the original including her remarkable voice! All four of the other roles were played with depth, charm and humor as befit the role. Each voice was worthy of a lead in any show. I was genuinely entertained and deeply moved!
Gave me that gospel feeling! The band was great. She gave it all!!
One of the best musicals ever ! The gal that played Janis was just wonderful as were the other performers.loved the venue too !
The show was all that one would expect from Janis Joplon.
I was not the only one with my hands covering my eyes when the strobe lights were aimed at the audience. Why would they do that? Was it just the position of our section? Thankfully it was not during every number. It was awful. Especially that it started unexpectedly and got blinded me nearly every time. The singers were incredibly talented. You might want to look up the song list before deciding about going. I thought I knew more Janis Joplin songs than I do so that's on me. Unfortunately most of the non-Joplin songs were not familiar.
Mary was at her best as well as the rest of the cast! This is a must see show if ever comes to town again. Fan.
I thought this was a great show with fantastic music. Not only about Janis, it also showcased several of her influences musically. A well rounded show very well performed.
I was expecting more, voices sounded good but musical/theatrical experience was remedial
The history behind Janis Joplin was a highlight in the show!
Fantastic show with a stellar performance by Mary Bridget Davies. Loved the concept of duets with Janis and the great women of blues who influenced her. An unforgettable, mesmerizing show!
A night with Janis Joplin was unbelievable. She looked and sounded and acted exactly like Janice would. I saw the real Janis Joplin at foothill College many years ago in the late 60s and this brought me back to that exact time. Even when Janice would drink southern comfort on stage. A smashing show
I came into the show thinking that the pure raw voice of Janis Joplin cannot be imitated. Well I was wrong! What a performance and show!!! Highly recommended!
I truely love the show. Thought it was amazing. All the singers were spot on. The lady who portrade Janis did an amazing performance. I would go see again.
This is the second Janis Joplin show we've seen (the first was several years ago with different performers) and we would go again. The lead singer (Janis) is remarkable and at times....Piece of my Heart, Cry Baby... you feel like you are really watching Janis Joplin. The supporting singers couldn't have been better, and the power of the band added the final touch to making this the best show we've seen. The San Jose Center for the Performing Arts is a very large venue, but it's so well designed that you feel you are in a more intimate setting. Also...lots of leg room between rows -- a huge plus!
I missed some of Janis’s electricity bit the overall performance was spectacular. Appreciated the juxtaposition of Janis and her influences. RIP Janis you are missed and you will go on.
We love this show. It's the second time we've seen it. Mary Bridget Davies does such an excellent job of portraying Janis. And she's such a great singer. We will go again when it comes back.
I was taught if I can't say something nice, don't say anything.
Excellent night out. Highly recommend this show. Very heartfelt show. The telling of her life, with the musicians was very well depicted.
