Amazingly funny show. Many stories and Christmas moments from the past
We've seen some of Waters' movies and watched him on various TV interview shows. We also read numerous glowing reviews from attendees of Waters' last Christmas show and looked forward to seeing his 2011 Christmas show live. I can't say whether things improved later in the evening because we walked out after about 40 minutes, but the first part of the show comprised a monologue of possible interest only to junior high schoolers (by chronology and/or maturity). For example, while most of America no longer finds four letter words shocking, Waters and some portion of his Jacksonville audience seemed to be stuck in 1953 and thrill to this self-proclaimed Bad Boy dropping an occasional F-bomb and do-do jokes. So, if you're 14 years old--or think, behave or wish you were--you might like this show; others should consider carefully before offering up your credit card number.
John Waters, the director of such cult films such as Hairspray, Cry Baby, and Pink Flamingos, now take his signature brand of sleaze humor and gleefully scalds the beloved image of Christmas. Dressed in a delightfully tacky red jacket and brandishing his trademark pin-thin mustache, John Waters is a tour-de-farce is this one-man show. Using excerpts from his autobiography "Role Models" and other raunchy and scandalous stories about his life, John Waters tells what he would like for Christmas. His list ranges from books to sex toys to the music rights of his never-released-on-video movie, Mondo Trasho. Through the hour and a half performance and the Q & A afterwards, John Waters takes his audience down a sewer pipe of filth which is his stream of consciousness. At the end, you’ll walk out with your cheeks sore and sides hurting from laughter, but your head hanging low in shame from the vulgarity you just witnessed. Yet through all the lewdness and lasciviousness, John Waters comes off as being very genuine and down-right loveable. He’s a cross between Mister Rogers and the uncle that kinda-sorta molested you at Christmas. Needless to say, I highly recommend this show as a great alternative to the sugar-coated corporate Christmas crud we get spoon-fed from year to year. Go see it, … unless you are too uptight to take jokes about gay Santas.
glad I got a chance to see him. he didn't seem thrilled to be there, so maybe he was just tired or having an off night, not as humerous or interesting as i thought it would be. love JW, but have had better encounters.
He was funny and provocative. I will be reminded of things that he said at the oddest times. Q and A was awesome.
Although I've seen/heard everything he's done this was the 1st time I'd seen him live. He was everything I anticipated. Wonderful, entertaining evening.
John Waters is naturally hilarious. This was the only holiday event I had planned. Fabulous choice!
Irreverent unabashed fun with a film making icon ! Great time with a gentleman who has an aura like no other about him! Don't miss a chance to be in his presence.
John Waters holds nothing back in his twisted and magical views on just how badass the Holidays could be. No pauses, split second humor that you can barely keep up with.
Waters' take on Christmas is a pleasure--more filled with amusement than the cynicism that has become so boring these days. His performance was energenic and hiliarious in a charmingly pervy sort of way. It was a wonderful, fun night!
John Waters is a genuinely funny guy. He has parlayed a career of artistic endeavour into a one-man cabaret of wit, wisdom, and a wondrous fascination with adult toys, poppers, and fashion. I could sit and listen to that Baltimore twang all night long. He also generously offered himself up for Q&A. I didn't do the backstage meet and greet, but friends who did reported that he was attentive and delightful. I hope he lives another 64 years!
Thank you Carolina Theater for bringing quality entertainment to the area. We need more intelligent, irreverent, and gay programs like this. John Waters' observations on the absurdities of the holiday season are a welcome change to the usual warm fuzzy shlock we are usually offered.
it was great to finally see him in person. But he came out rushed, didn't acknowledge or thank the crowd, or come up with some story about where he was (Durham, NC). Seemed like he just wanted to hurry up and get it over with. Hard to follow the logic to his dialogue too.
Def not a show for the kiddies, but it was a show that made you look at the holidays in a whole new light. John was funny, moved about the stage rather then hide behind the lecturn (unlike David Sedaris recently) He did a little Q&A after he was done and was overall a great way to spend a chilly winter night. Wish he would do a tour for every holiday!!
He was fantastic. It felt like I was at his house talking with him. His knowledge and comfort level were great.
Brilliant, intelligent, ultra-liberal, timely, and adult holiday appropriate.
