About

A Charlie Brown Christmas on Tour

Christmas comes but once a year, and so does A Charlie Brown Christmas, the Charlie Brown-iest of seasonal theatrical spectacles. Based on the Emmy- and Peabody-winning 1965 animated television special inspired by artist Charles M. Schulz's classic Peanuts comic strip, which ran from 1950 to 2000, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been an evergreen holiday event since 2013.

Set amid the wintry delights of Schulz's Minnesota childhood, A Charlie Brown Christmas finds the Peanuts gang working out the true meaning of Christmas for themselves in a world devoid of adult supervision. And if, like the musical's title character, you suffer from unfulfilled seasonal expectations, you'll find a natural palliative in composer Vince Guaraldi's jazzy score, which has sold more than four million copies since its initial release thanks to the irrepressible swing of songs like "Linus and Lucy," "Skating" and "Christmas Time Is Here."

About A Charlie Brown Christmas

Commissioned by the Coca-Cola company, A Charlie Brown Christmas was pitched, written and produced on a tiny budget for television in a flash in 1965. It became an unexpected hit and a holiday perennial on the strength of its delightful translation of the comic strip's iconic child cast to the small screen. The stage adaptation, authorized by the Schulz family and producer Lee Mendelson, retains everything delightful about the TV special, which was written by veteran TV director Bill Melendez.

As his friends skate and cavort in their winter wonderland, a depressed Charlie Brown gets out of his seasonal funk with the help of Lucy, who suggests he direct a Christmas play. Against all obstacles, a truly Charlie Brown Christmas tree — puny and bereft of glitz and glory — inspires a moving message about the true meaning of Christmas. Jazz composer Vince Guaraldi's lively songs alternate with classic Christmas carols, and productions often conclude with an audience sing-along.

    Production deficiencies

by In the dark on 11/21/23Steelhouse Omaha - Omaha

The actors did the best they could under unacceptable lighting conditions. Clearly something was wrong with the lighting. Spot lights were not aimed correctly. Frequently, actors were front stage in the dark with the lights behind them. The tickets were too expensive for such poor production details.

Great play but our seating was not good.

by Mj on 11/21/23Steelhouse Omaha - Omaha

Really enjoyed the play but our seating could have been a lot better!! We had tickets in row 3 left side. Thought that would be great. Little did I know they would have props on the stage so we were not able to see quite a bit of the show. That was really disappointing!!! How would we know that was going to be an issue????

Too expensive for a cast of children

    by SoCalMom on 11/18/23

I definitely did not expect an inexperienced children’s theater production for the ticket price we paid. I felt like we were at an elementary school play. Snoopy wearing a pajamas onesie, hardly any sets or props, 25 minutes of story and 15 minutes of the cast singing Christmas carols. My kids enjoyed it. I did not. Wasn’t a good value for the money AT ALL.

Fun, different, not a great venue, not a good value

by B. D. on 12/22/22Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds New Buffalo - New Buffalo

I LOVE Peanuts. Not knowing what to expect, three of us nuts went to see the show. $135 and the seats I thought I had reserved were not where I thought. We thought we had aisle seats and there were in the middle of the row in the left outside section of the venue. The aisle seats wouldn't have been much better. We were about 11 row back from the stage, but so far to the left that we could only see about a third of the stage. Luckily there were screens or I would not have seen most of the play. Even though I enjoyed the show, I would not go again. I'm not sure that I would go to another show there.

    Great actors, poor venue

by Jamie on 12/21/22Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds New Buffalo - New Buffalo

The actors themselves were great. However, the venue was terrible - especially for children. The play was in an event center - not an auditorium. Which means the floor was completely flat. Anyone sitting on a chair on the floor could not see the actors because of everyone in front of them. Typically, the floor raises as you walk towards the back of the theater - this one did not. Every child I saw and most adults, had to watch the screens on either side of main stage in order to see anything. We did not come to watch this on a screen - we came to watch a play. Greatly disappointed, and will not be returning.

    Very well done

by Joe with a J on 12/21/22Majestic Theatre Dallas - Dallas

A wonderful show for the entire family. The cast was talented and the original special was really well interpreted into a musical setting. Also, in an increasingly secular society, it was a bit refreshing to see them lean into the religious messaging within the original story. I expected that to be toned down to be a bit more palatable to general audiences, and was pleasantly surprised to see it remain intact. If you love the original story and make it yearly viewing, this show is definitely worth watching. And it works for 4-104, so take the whole family. Thumbs up across the board from mine.

    Fantastic

by Nana on 12/21/22Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds New Buffalo - New Buffalo

The grandchildren said they had the best time ever. They loved the music and the dancing. Our youngest granddaughter stood up and sang with them in the end. The two things that were mentioned that they didn’t like is that I had to tell them who the other characters were that weren’t the main ones. Also, it went too fast and they missed Woodstock of course. It was well lived by the whole family!

    Nothing like I expected

by LJ on 12/21/22Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds New Buffalo - New Buffalo

This was what I would consider a high school play. Was not geared toward children. Story line was there, but wasn’t seamless. My 5 year old granddaughter fell asleep during it. My friends’s 10 year son asked to play on her phone as he was “bored and hated it.”

    Outstanding show!

by DIANN on 12/20/22Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds New Buffalo - New Buffalo

We were a party of 9 and it was challenging to get all the seats together. App wouldn't let me book more than 4 at a time. That was ridiculous and time consuming. The show was amazing and the cast out on a wonderful performance. It was great that the cameras panned over the musicians as well.

    Disappointing

by Nicole on 12/20/22Silver Creek Event Center at Four Winds New Buffalo - New Buffalo

I loved Snoopy and the Peanuts gang ever since I was 3 years old. I've been to other stage performances. This one was the most disappointing. It was nice and all but wasn't nearly what I expected. I don't think it was even worth all the money. After seeing it, the tickets were priced way too high. I'm so glad that I didn't pay for the front row seats. The show wasn't worth the money and it barely lasted an hour.

    Amazing evening with the family

by OhioTechyDude on 12/19/22Packard Music Hall - Warren

This caught my eye and I am so glad we took the family. All seven of us truly enjoyed the night. From the opening comments by Lucy to the final bows this was a Holiday memory to make and treasure. Such a talented cast and the trio that covered all the original Vince Geraldi tunes? Spot on; they were great. We like this venue and it is worth the 1 hour 15 minute drive there. Keep the good shows coming.
