About

A Charlie Brown Christmas on Tour

Christmas comes but once a year, and so does A Charlie Brown Christmas, the Charlie Brown-iest of seasonal theatrical spectacles. Based on the Emmy- and Peabody-winning 1965 animated television special inspired by artist Charles M. Schulz's classic Peanuts comic strip, which ran from 1950 to 2000, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been an evergreen holiday event since 2013.

Set amid the wintry delights of Schulz's Minnesota childhood, A Charlie Brown Christmas finds the Peanuts gang working out the true meaning of Christmas for themselves in a world devoid of adult supervision. And if, like the musical's title character, you suffer from unfulfilled seasonal expectations, you'll find a natural palliative in composer Vince Guaraldi's jazzy score, which has sold more than four million copies since its initial release thanks to the irrepressible swing of songs like "Linus and Lucy," "Skating" and "Christmas Time Is Here."

About A Charlie Brown Christmas

Commissioned by the Coca-Cola company, A Charlie Brown Christmas was pitched, written and produced on a tiny budget for television in a flash in 1965. It became an unexpected hit and a holiday perennial on the strength of its delightful translation of the comic strip's iconic child cast to the small screen. The stage adaptation, authorized by the Schulz family and producer Lee Mendelson, retains everything delightful about the TV special, which was written by veteran TV director Bill Melendez.

As his friends skate and cavort in their winter wonderland, a depressed Charlie Brown gets out of his seasonal funk with the help of Lucy, who suggests he direct a Christmas play. Against all obstacles, a truly Charlie Brown Christmas tree — puny and bereft of glitz and glory — inspires a moving message about the true meaning of Christmas. Jazz composer Vince Guaraldi's lively songs alternate with classic Christmas carols, and productions often conclude with an audience sing-along.

    fair show, unfair price

by Grandmatheater on 11/22/17Ames Center - Burnsville

I was excited to take my grandkids to this show, and left extremely disappointed. For 40 bucks per ticket I expected a professional production, not one that was along the lines of a high school play. The kids were disappointed there was no program to read, since they take in many shows a year and are always looking for connections among twin cities performers, directors, etc. The show itself was ok. Snoopy was acted very well, the musicians were excellent, and some of the voices were fine. Still, for the price, it was a total waste.

A Charlie Brown Christmas Was Forgettable

    by DavidJ83 on 11/22/17Ames Center - Burnsville

Not a good show for a couple. For kids it's be ok but not good. The venues seating is really confusing. The show was about as good as a highschool play.

    Charlie Brown Christmas is slow.

    by Rats2468 on 11/22/17Ames Center - Burnsville

The show live is pretty slow, just like it is on video...the musicians and Snoopy were great.

by Hags21 on 12/25/16The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

It was terrible, nothing of what we expected. Kids thought they would see all the peanuts characters, not humans.

Charlie Brown was a bit disappointing.

by MomOf3weeones on 12/21/16NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

My kids, ages 4-7, enjoyed it, but it was somewhat like a high school production in quality. Props were cheap looking and minimal (think painted cardboard box). Also, it was about 45 minutes, and tickets were $35 each. We did not even have the most expensive tickets! Although kids seemed to have a few laughs, I would not recommend given the cost and travel time required.

Was OK, good for little kids. Couldn't hear a thing with all the kids talking, etc. Adults just encourage it. Was annoying!!

    Good Grief!

by Anonymous1985 on 12/28/15The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

This may have been the worst live show we have ever seen. Only 5 of the peanuts characters were in the show, the set was 5 boards with each of the 5 characters drawn on them, Lucy's psychiatrist stand (when necessary) and Snoopy's dog house. Charlie Brown had a full head of hair and never said "good grief", however a couple of the other characters said it. If you didn't know any better, you would have thought Snoopy was the star of the show. He talked, sang, and danced. Woodstock didn't make an appearance at all, although Lucy and Sally at one point put on plastic beaks and pretended to be birds. Lucy and Snoopy were practically best buds throughout the show. The tickets cost $35 each. The show only lasted 40 minutes. In order to extend the actual show the director/ producer/ cast needed to add some song and dance filler, however we could have done without these. Maybe if they included the rest of the major characters they could have come up with something more entertaining. For the cost of the show plus parking, it wasn't even close to being worth the money. It was really disappointing. We definitely expected it to be more than it was; what we got was a production that even a high school would have been embarrassed to put on. You could have gotten a better performance out of elementary school students. This was not worth $35/ ticket or 40 minutes of our time.

    Bored

by ZiggyK on 12/23/15The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

Maybe it was the seats. Maybe it was the acoustics. We could barely hear the actors. The set was dull and unimaginative. And two of us fell asleep during the short production.

charlie brown christmas was a dud

by veronamom on 12/22/15The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

This show began at 7:20 and was over by 8:05. For $35 per ticket. That's a dollar a minute. Per person. If it was a good production, I could see that being reasonable, but really it wasn't. I figured they would expand the story a bit so it was longer than the special we see on tv. Nope. Well, they did have a singalong at the end, which added maybe 7 minutes to the show. I'd say the 5 year old in the crowd might have liked it, but that's about it. Save your money.

Charlie Brown christmas was cute. However, it was way too short. Didn't feel like I got my money's worth. I would recommend but warn them that it was short

    disappointing

by steph4281 on 12/14/15NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Was disappointed in the quality of the show. Expected something totally different. Was not like the Charlie Brown Christmas at all. And my kids wanted to see a snoopy that actually looked like a dog. Not a human playing a dog. Maybe they can invest in real character costumes.
