A Bronx Tale: The Musical on Tour
Originating in Los Angeles as a one-man play written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, A Bronx Tale became a 1993 movie produced and directed by Robert De Niro before opening as a Broadway musical in 2016. Palminteri's coming-of-age story about Calogero, a young New Yorker struggling to reconcile his father's values with the alluring world of organized crime, is now a powerful touring show retaining the high standards set by codirectors De Niro and Jerry Zaks. Alan Menken, known for the Disney screen and stage classics Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, composed the doo-wop flavored score. The touring cast features 2015 American Idol winner Nick Fradiani as Calogero's father, with Jeff Brooks as the charismatic mob boss, Sonny. Fans of Jersey Boys and West Side Story will find much to enjoy and admire in a musical that captures New York's multicultural milieu in all its colorful intensity.
A Bronx Tale: The Musical Background
Chazz Palminteri's stirring one-man play about a young New Yorker torn between his father's old-school ethics and a life of crime is based on the writer-actor's traumatic childhood encounter with murder. After portraying 18 characters onstage, Palminteri found a sympathetic patron and partner in Robert De Niro, with whom Palminteri would act in the acclaimed 1993 film adaptation of A Bronx Tale, which De Niro produced and directed. After performing his one-man show on Broadway in 2007, Palminteri expanded it into a full-fledged musical, codirected by De Niro, that fleshed out his story with the evocative sounds of doo-wop, R&B and 1960s girl groups as reimagined by composer Alan Menken with lyricist Glenn Slater. Palminteri's story also includes an interracial romance whose challenges echo those explored in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Over the decades, A Bronx Tale has evolved into a multimedia morality saga whose universal lessons are delivered in high-spirited, emotionally riveting Broadway style.
Very enjoyable and entertaining. The show was well cast lead singers had wonderful voices. Everything about this production was extremely well done
FANTASTIC!!!!! WOW Wonderful!!!!! Want to see it again!!!!!
Great actors, dancers, singers and the story well acted. I enjoyed it very much.
knew the story but enjoyed the production and the AuRene theater in florida expecially fun for ex new yorkers
I love it! the actors were great and all the detail the scenes were impressive, I really felt enthusiasm and energy of the play
A Bronx Tale tells a familiar story, set to music. The cast was uniformly talented, and the whole afternoon was pleasant. While the songs were all very lovely, I can't think of one that stood out as special. The theme of the show, black vs. white, good vs. evil, is quite relevant today, so I'm glad I saw it. It gave me a lot to think about!
The story was good and the music was very good. Enjoyed the show
Enjoyed the performance. Songs and writing were very well done. Great show!
We certainly enjoyed the show. Great staging, singing and choreography. The characters were all strong and the show moved along seamlessly. I didn't know what to expect because the movie stayed in my mind as depressing at times but the show pulled it out of an despair.
Youngest actor was really good. Pretty much kept w the original. Didnt like the Sonny character
I enjoyed it but I would've enjoyed it more with less musical numbers. Good acting and dancing.
Actors and dancers were talented. I don’t know what I expected but I expected more from a Broadway production.
The show was just ok. Nothing great. Nothing that memorable.
Although the music was OK, the plot was trite. In addition, the seats were extremely uncomfortable. The theater should renovate those seats with all the money donated to them.
Loved the story and the show. Very moving. Very well acted
The play was fabulous. My husband has a new Lease on theater. We sign up For him for season tickets at The au Renee theater
The sound track overpowered the singers. Hard to hear. Good message in last half of show. Good energy and timing of dancers excellent
First time in this theatre. Was pulled over by a police officer for following the directions from a uniformed crossing guard who was dressed like a police officer. Parking was a challenge. I saw the same play previously in New York with pretty much the same cast. I brought my grandchildren this time. They were the only children in the theatre. The language used in this performance seemed to have more expletives than I remembered.
I love this theater and had great seats. That being said, I didn’t care for A Bronx Tale at all. It followed the movie which was fine but the music was terrible. I can’t remember one song that was memorable. There was hardly any dancing. The actors tried their best but they were only so, so.
I just thought it would be better. It wasn't bad the actors were amazing especially little Calogero who was played by Brigg Liberman at my performance. The story was weak it didn't focus enough on the story in my opinion it focused too much on being a musical. Now I love a muscial but just thought the story line could have been better.
