A Bronx Tale: The Musical on Tour

Originating in Los Angeles as a one-man play written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, A Bronx Tale became a 1993 movie produced and directed by Robert De Niro before opening as a Broadway musical in 2016. Palminteri's coming-of-age story about Calogero, a young New Yorker struggling to reconcile his father's values with the alluring world of organized crime, is now a powerful touring show retaining the high standards set by codirectors De Niro and Jerry Zaks. Alan Menken, known for the Disney screen and stage classics Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, composed the doo-wop flavored score. The touring cast features 2015 American Idol winner Nick Fradiani as Calogero's father, with Jeff Brooks as the charismatic mob boss, Sonny. Fans of Jersey Boys and West Side Story will find much to enjoy and admire in a musical that captures New York's multicultural milieu in all its colorful intensity.

A Bronx Tale: The Musical Background

Chazz Palminteri's stirring one-man play about a young New Yorker torn between his father's old-school ethics and a life of crime is based on the writer-actor's traumatic childhood encounter with murder. After portraying 18 characters onstage, Palminteri found a sympathetic patron and partner in Robert De Niro, with whom Palminteri would act in the acclaimed 1993 film adaptation of A Bronx Tale, which De Niro produced and directed. After performing his one-man show on Broadway in 2007, Palminteri expanded it into a full-fledged musical, codirected by De Niro, that fleshed out his story with the evocative sounds of doo-wop, R&B and 1960s girl groups as reimagined by composer Alan Menken with lyricist Glenn Slater. Palminteri's story also includes an interracial romance whose challenges echo those explored in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Over the decades, A Bronx Tale has evolved into a multimedia morality saga whose universal lessons are delivered in high-spirited, emotionally riveting Broadway style.

A Bronx Tale was filled with fantastic singing, dancing and orchestra music. The story was told scene by scene as a flashback narrated by "C". Engaging from the opening till the finale!

What an awesome performance by all. So creative and brought all important and memorable scenes into the performance that one would think it to be impossible to create on stage. WTG ! I would see it again!

    Average musical

by zimbo47 on 10/21/18Rochester Auditorium Theatre - Rochester

My wife and I viewed this musical at the Auditorium theater. The first half dragged with cute but not memorable songs. The story was a bit unbelievable. The second half was a little more enjoyable. It deemed that all of the songs had different lyrics but the same music. The worst part of the whole event was the Auditorium theater. What a dump. Seats too old, uncomfortable, and too close. Most of my view was the back of some guys head. I will not attend anymore performances at this venue. Give me Geva Theater any day.

    Extremely well done

by Tony49 on 10/21/18Rochester Auditorium Theatre - Rochester

Bronx Tale is one of my favorite movies, and I wasn't disappointed one bit by the musical versions. Everything that made the movie great was left in and there was so much more added. Musical numbers left me leaving the theater humming to myself, and I was quoting lines from the play for days after.

A Bronx Tale is not to be missed!

by DrGSA on 10/20/18Rochester Auditorium Theatre - Rochester

I wanted to see "A Bronx Tale" on Broadway, but it never worked out, so I was delighted that Rochester was the opening venue for the First National Tour. I was very happy to see so many lead actors from Broadway staying with the show. The primary draw for me was that I love the movie from whence it came; and I loved the musical! Terrific music from Alan Menken, terrific choreography, updated doowop 60's style, and a spontaneous standing ovation from the full theater. This is the fourth iteration of Chazz Palminteri autobiographical story chronicling his coming of age in the Italian community of the Bronx and his escape from the life of a mobster. The casting and costuming were exceptional, uniquely portraying each charater's personality while physicalizing them so that it was always clear who was who and their relationship to the rest of the individuals in the story. A special nod to Frankie Leoni who portrayed Young Calogero knocking "I Like It" out of the ballpark. All in all "A Bronx Tale" is a totally satisfying, entertaining evening of theatre. One that will be remembered!

The Bronx Tale was a fast moving tale that definitely mirrored real life situations. The music and dancing were extremely well done. It was a truly entertaining experience that ended much too quickly.

Totally enjoyable, the story, the talent, and the venue. It had humor and pathos. Parking is easily available and entry orderly and efficient.
