A Bronx Tale: The Musical on Tour
Originating in Los Angeles as a one-man play written and performed by Chazz Palminteri, A Bronx Tale became a 1993 movie produced and directed by Robert De Niro before opening as a Broadway musical in 2016. Palminteri's coming-of-age story about Calogero, a young New Yorker struggling to reconcile his father's values with the alluring world of organized crime, is now a powerful touring show retaining the high standards set by codirectors De Niro and Jerry Zaks. Alan Menken, known for the Disney screen and stage classics Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, composed the doo-wop flavored score. The touring cast features 2015 American Idol winner Nick Fradiani as Calogero's father, with Jeff Brooks as the charismatic mob boss, Sonny. Fans of Jersey Boys and West Side Story will find much to enjoy and admire in a musical that captures New York's multicultural milieu in all its colorful intensity.
A Bronx Tale: The Musical Background
Chazz Palminteri's stirring one-man play about a young New Yorker torn between his father's old-school ethics and a life of crime is based on the writer-actor's traumatic childhood encounter with murder. After portraying 18 characters onstage, Palminteri found a sympathetic patron and partner in Robert De Niro, with whom Palminteri would act in the acclaimed 1993 film adaptation of A Bronx Tale, which De Niro produced and directed. After performing his one-man show on Broadway in 2007, Palminteri expanded it into a full-fledged musical, codirected by De Niro, that fleshed out his story with the evocative sounds of doo-wop, R&B and 1960s girl groups as reimagined by composer Alan Menken with lyricist Glenn Slater. Palminteri's story also includes an interracial romance whose challenges echo those explored in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Over the decades, A Bronx Tale has evolved into a multimedia morality saga whose universal lessons are delivered in high-spirited, emotionally riveting Broadway style.
Great Fun. The time went really fast, I was so into the musical. Cast was great, fast pace, and the gun shots were so real.
It surpassed what I expected so much. It was one of the best shows. My boyfriend is not a play person and definitely not a musical person but he loved it and is excited to see more. I 1000% recommend seeing it!!!
Great storyline. Dancing and singing was excellent! Young boy was very talented and great singer.
Our group went out to celebrate my birthday with dinner and A Bronx Tale. The play was perfect and of course the Fisher is always a great time. Parking is easy and free, the bldg /theater is magnificent with a friendly, helpful staff and volunteers.
Everything I expected !!! The play was a great experience for a father and son we both really enjoyed
From the smiles on the staff’s faces, to the great cappuccino while waiting for the show to begin, then the great performance of The Bronx Tale, excellent evening in The D.
I'm a fan of live theater and had never seen this show before and was pleasantly surprised to LOVE IT and will be adding this show to my list to see again! Very entertaining and compelling. Beautiful sets and great set movement between scenes and the lighting effects were fabulous!
Very entertaining! Dancing was awesome. The singing performances were excellent! Nick Fradiani knocked it out of the park!
Didn’t know what to expect of a musical based on a “mafia” type of story. Music, dancing, actors all created a great production! Definitely recommend this show to Broadway fans!
From the easy parking, will-call easy pick up, refreshments, to cast - everything was phenomenal. Favorite voice was a tie between the barkeeper and the father. Favorite dancer would be the ginger haired talent. Play was excellent. The Fisher Theatre never disappoints
The singers were great, the actors and actresses were good and funny. It was a very nice night out at Count Basie. If this was on Broadway, I would not have been disappointed. .
Loved the show but I doubt I will ever go to this venue for a play it musical ever again. The people who attended were very rude and inconsiderate. Many showed up after the show had already started, people were picking fights with each other in the audience, many were audibly talking to each other. I applaud the performers for being professional as there was no way this distraction went unnoticed.
Excellent performance. My family loves the movie and we decided to see the musical. It was so entertaining. Our only wish was that it would be on stage for more than the 2 days. After our review other family members would have loved to have gone!
Even better than our high expectations. We truly enjoyed ourselves.
This show was awesome. Good set design and story always good. Funny, sad, serious all in one
We have been to the Count Basie Theatre many times and have always had a great experience. Unfortunately this evening was very different. The performance was superb! The theatre experience was not. The tickets said show was to start at 7:30 and patrons were asked to arrive early for security check in. We were on line by 6:50 pm. At 7:20 pm we were still standing outside the theatre in the rain. At 7:40 we were finally in our seats and the theatre was only half full. It was clear that the show was not starting on time. At 8:00 pm the show started and the ushers continued to seat patrons throughout the first 15 minutes of the show which was very distracting! These patrons were carrying drinks from the theatre bar so clearly they were not pressured to move to their seats by the house staff. The same thing happened at intermission with patrons taking their time to get to their seats long after the house lights went out. At the end of the show, during the last scene, patrons wanting to beat the crowd stood up starting to leave, ruining the last scene for those seated. The performers were excellent and working very hard on stage to deliver a professional level show. The theatre needs to match this level of professionalism with how they are managing their house so that all patrons can enjoy the show. The show deserves 5 stars but the theatre management on this particular night earned only 1.
Should have advised ticket holders of the security measures at the door and the need to leave extra time
Rushed dinner to get to theatre at 7:10PM for 7:30PM start of show. Had to wait on enormous line in rain to enter the theatre. Got into theatre at 7:50PM. Show started at 8:05PM Unacceptable.
I was disappointed. .I find that play's are better than the movie.. With this performance that wasn't the case. It was ok but would not recommend thank you
I couldn’t even stay for the show. The waiting room outside of the theatre was packed. They let us in really late. I was having a panic attack standing for over an hour. The heat was blasting. Then we finally go in and the seats are sooo tiny, worse than an airplane. People around us were even complaining about it. The show was supposed to start at 7:30, and by 7:50 when they were still letting people in, we decided to leave. We couldn’t sit comfortable especially not knowing when it would actually start.
