Washington Commanders History

The Washington Commanders were founded as the Boston Braves in 1932 and are one of the original members of the NFL's Eastern Division.

In 1937, they moved to Washington, where they won their first game in D.C. against the New York Giants, and have since become one of the most recognizable professional sports franchises in history. They have 32 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and one recipient of the Walter Payton NFL Man of The Year Award — Darrell Green. The team has won five league championship titles (1937, 1942, 1982, 1987, and 1991), five conference championships, 15 division championships, and have made 25 playoff appearances.

Washington Commanders at Commanders Field

Located in Summerfield, Maryland, five miles east of Washington, D.C., Commanders Field opened in 1997 as Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. FedEx purchased the naming rights for the stadium in 1999, and the building was known as FedExField until 2024. Commanders Field has a capacity of 67,717 for Commanders games. The stadium features five levels of seating, including the Bobby Mitchell Level, Joe Gibbs Club Level and Pete Rozelle Upper Level — all named after Pro Football Hall of Famers who made an impact on the Commanders’ career.

The Commanders were also the first NFL team to have a marching band starting in 1937. To this day, the Commanders Marching Band is one of only two professional football marching bands, and continues to entertain fans during pre-game and halftime performances.

    Washington Commanders gets a promotion!

by Admiral Kirk on 8/10/22FedExField - Landover

The VIP service was very classy and elegantly done. The employees at the stadium were very polite and courteous. There is no doubt that the Washington Commanders' Senior Staff demands high standards of customer service and customer interactions. Thanks Ticketmaster for the invite. Thanks Washington Commanders and Janee Brown for a job very well done. Admiral

    Wrist bands

    by B. Dorsey on 8/9/22FedExField - Landover

I arrived at 2 to be first in line to receive a wrist band to go onto the field to get autographs, and they didn’t do that part. They had everyone (wristbands or not) only come to the front seating. If I would have known that I wouldn’t have arrived so early.

    Night Practice @Fed Ex

by Tink on 8/9/22FedExField - Landover

Me and my son attended the Commanders night practice and we thought everything was well organized. I personally liked the commentary with the players and introduction of what was next duriing practice. As a lifetime D.C /Maryland residence i would really like to hear more Go-Go music in the stands.

    Meeting Expectations

by Mandy Pandy on 8/9/22FedExField - Landover

Overall the event was great! It was good to see fans out and excited about the season. Having the perks of a gold card member has already paid off. In the future when events are just for a particular group of people, the event should be clearly noted and directions given, and identification should be required(Taste of Fedex required tickets, I thought). With covid still on the rise, Mask should be required while on the inside. I know that the band for mask has been lifted, however you don't want your venue to be the source of spreading the virus. Just some things I noticed! Once again, we really had a good time. Looking forward to a winning season.

    Lack of organization

by Stephen on 8/9/22FedExField - Landover

Poorly setup event. We would not buy tickets to future Washington Commanders games based on this event. Old stadium, poorly organized, food is terrible. Really sad organization but dwindling attendance explains this better than my words.

    Good but better in RVA

by Sherrie on 8/9/22FedExField - Landover

It was great experience although when they used to practice in RVA it was more personal the kids met the players. I would recommend maybe a signed football for the fans or kids. My grandson who is 3 years old liked player #1. He would get so happy to see him run up the field. Thank you so much.

A FANTASTIC day at FedEx Field.

    by Rell C.N. on 8/9/22FedExField - Landover

My Husband and I had V.I.P tickets for the Washington Commanders open practice to the public at FedEx Field. FREE parking, drinks and food was not what we had expected. The meet and greet with London Fletcher and Jason the former Washington players, sharing their football careers stories with the public, was certainly beyond amazing. Also, seeing the number of people who came out to support the Washington Commanders Football Team was a minding blowing WOW EXPERIENCE! Thank you to the Washington Commanders Football Team Organization.
