Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

    Todd “Stood Up”

by vadreamer on 5/17/24Warner Theatre - Washington

Excellent show primarily focused on music from the second half of Todd’s career. These are deeper tracks in many respects, but no less wonderful. Todd’s voice was tired as he struggled to reach notes and get sounds out, but touring will do that to you and he was still completely impressive. He’s one of my favorite guitar players and he just has an organic feel that’s very natural. I think it’s the way he constantly applies vibrato to the strings that makes the sound flow so well. The band was tight and right with him for all the changes. The variety of moods that Todd’s music evokes is truly staggering. If you have eclectic tastes, this is the show for you.

The show was average at best

by raywbstr on 5/17/24Warner Theatre - Washington

They played good music I'm just disappointed he never plays any of the songs that made him famous years ago. Many in the audience felt that way too and one gentleman even yelled out "play something we came to hear"! I love mostly his old music but for this reason I will no longer go see him play live.

He was into it. Audience wasn’t.

by AmyP on 5/17/24Warner Theatre - Washington

He did not play a single song that made him famous (and the reason many bought tix). During the encore, he played a SHORT medley of 3 songs I knew. Paid $200, sat for 90 minutes for a 2 minute medley. I understand artists wanting to introduce new material, but it could have performed both old and new. GIVE FANS WHAT THEY WANT, OR THEY WONT BE BACK

    Good, but not great

by Cybrarian on 5/17/24Warner Theatre - Washington

The band was great, and Todd was excellent on guitar, though his voice didn't seem to be as strong or recognizable as it once was. That may have been because of the soundboard or the acoustics, though we were in the middle of the floor where the sound should have been best. The show was good overall, but while I appreciate that he's done lots since the 70s & 80s, it would have been nice to hear more of his oldest songs sprinkled in the main performance. I was a little disappointed.

    Never disappoints

by Denise P. on 5/17/24Warner Theatre - Washington

We have seen Todd Rundgren a number of times over the past few years in a variety of venues. He always delivers a stellar performance. He has a great band and he has so much material that it's a new and different show every time. The show was very enjoyable. His band was excellent. He wasn't very engaging with the audience that evening, but the music was phenomenal.

Todd was amazing! A fantastic show, even without the “greatest hits.”

    An Extraordinary, Surprising Concert

    by Larry on 5/16/24

I saw Me/We in Washington, D.C. and I thought it was exceptional. Todd and the band sounded fantastic--at the top of their game. With minimal audience interaction, it was more of a "formal music concert"than a festival party. And it was focused on deep cuts, not greatest hits. I LOVED that choice, because every song was a surprise. I would also say the songs were selected to make room for exceptional vocal work by Todd, and the band. A remarkable show by a GREAT artist who refuses to "phone it in."

Top of the live show pyramid

by LD on 5/15/24Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

I’ve been a Todd fan for 50+ years and I’ve been to many live shows. I gotta say this Me/We show is awesome and in the top five or so live shows I’ve been to. Todd and his band performed amazingly, the sound was really exceptional, and the set list was refreshing as it was made up of songs that haven’t been played often or ever in some cases, in concert. It was so good I caught a second show !

    Bad sound at the Basie

    by exit98 on 5/14/24

I can understand why the more casual fans are disappointed. It would have been great to hear a few more "hits". But I really enjoyed the deep cuts and more obscure songs from his repertoire and Todd exhibited a lot of energy. However, I thought the mix was bad. The band was great, but Todd's voice was very muddy. I could hardly understand the lyrics, even on the songs that I was familiar with. It's a shame because they are also a key to appreciating his talent.
