Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Band was good. Started on time. Never played any of his hits. Just a "smash up"towards the end.

Thinking Man's Rock - WOW Level

by Woodford on 4/27/24The Andrew J Brady Music Center - Cincinnati

WOW. The first 1:40 I knew nothing of the songs he did. I was glad to hear it rocking, floating, moving, solid, thought-provoking, quality at its highest, morally sound. I am still being influenced by the song where he learned kindness from someone who showed him kindness and the endless influence that kindness to others has. I found that it was very positive to women. I found it to be one of the best shows I have seen in a decade. The last 0:20 he did a medley of old hits and 2 older songs that I knew as well so it did satisfy the remeniscing part of the Top 40 old days. I want to go again!

Educate yourself before you buy tix to any concert

by Debsmisto on 4/27/24The Andrew J Brady Music Center - Cincinnati

Todd has never hidden who he is as an artist and performer. His concerts can vary a lot from tour to tour. The current Me/We tour is dedicated to the deeper fans that know more of his catalog than just the hits. Please educate yourselves about what you are buying tickets for before you spend your money.

    Todd’s Deep Tracks

by Buckeyefan007 on 4/27/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Set list was rather obscure. He sounded and played well but he didn’t play any hits and at $150 a pop that’s what I wanted to see.

    I wanted old Todd

by Katie Scarlett on 4/26/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

I should have read the tour info before buying tickets. I wanted to hear the soundtrack of my youth, not Todd’s new music. Not a song I recognized until the encore. Very disappointed.

    Not what was expected

by Frequent Concert Goer on 4/26/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

I drove 4.5 hours round trip to see this concert and he sang songs that nobody knew until his encore when he sang a melody of his popular songs for about 3 minutes. A very disppointing concert. Friends saw him the next night in Cincinnati and said the same thing. Waste of money.

    Good guitar player, material meh

by Madman on 4/26/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Sure would have been nice to hear more of the hits that made him famous. He saves the hits for an encore and then wraps up the hits in a 2 minute medley. Kind of a weird thing to do to fans.

    The “Obscure” Tour

by Hooter on 4/26/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Frat brother wanted to see Todd. He’s been a fan for 49 years. I listened to his three hits on Spotify before the concert. He didn’t play “I don’t wanna work, I just wanna bang on this drum all day”. His renditions of “I saw the light” and “Hello it’s me” (which, I thought were Carly Simon songs, we very disingenuously run through to appease the audience/prove some Artist point. 24 of 26 songs never appeared in any chart. Don’t bother. You’re just paying his rent.

    Todd Didn't Run-dgren.

by Benny on 4/25/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Concert was just OK. Very slow and boring in the beginning and the it finally livened up. Then extremely disappointing finish with a montage of his best hits just slammed out. It didn't sound good or flow well. Just sing your hits all the way through and singe them well. That's why we come to see you in the first place. BLAH!

    Good show/bad lighting

by c-lou on 4/25/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Enjoyed the show. Like most of my age, wish he played a few of his 70s hits as full songs at the end, but appreciated the medley. I like hearing what an artist from my past is performing now. I think it's rude to go only hoping for those nostalgic hits. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT was the lighting. Stage left front had NO LIGHTING!! Todd was great with going upstage to the left and right to engage with the whole audience, but when he went upstage left he was in total shadow! I thought the venue would realize this and correct it, but apparently no one was paying attention to that. My seat was higher up with a little bit of obs view due to a stair railing. When he came stage left, that was the best view for me, but then he just got drowned in shadow. Even the screen projections couldn't help that fail.

    Terrible Concert

by MikeN on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Really like Todd Rundgren and all if his hits. With that said, the first 22 songs played I had never heard of. Then in an encore he did 2 hits in medley style. Then 2 more never heard of tunes. Worst concert experience ever in my life and I am not hard to please. Wasted a lot of money and time I'll never get back again.

    We love him

by Just Plain Stevie on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

It's great to see Todd on the road again. Most people attending are real fans and know what expect, he is a very independent character! The band is tight as always. Todd put together an interesting setlist, about 2 hr 20 mins. 27 songs from 17 different albums! Wow!

    Extremely Talented! Lacked Concert Ingredients

by Tone Deaf on 4/24/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

Todd Rundgren Certainly doesn't need a review from me ! Extremely Talented musician, writer, producer etc. Etc. My opinion is he could have structured his set list different and he also could embrace the audience some. Just give the crowd a little breather from the music. Maybe just not his style? That's OK!!
