Four masters of their respective instruments get together to pay homage to Tony Williams - what can you say? They definitely kicked it - in a highly energized, freewheeling, powerful concert. Jack Bruce was doing "fusion" jazz with Tony Williams before the title "fusion" was even applied. This performance was again almost undefinable - post-acid-jazz?? I don't know. But it did more than just honor Williams - it was a living, moving, screaming, banning piece of well-orchestrated cacophony - and, wow - it was terrific! Cindy Blackman-Santana is so fast, precise, inventive - and - geez - I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone hit the drums so hard - man or woman - in my life. She was mostly Tony with a little bit of Keith Moon thrown in. Jack was enigmatic - laying it down deep - keeping the whole crazy enterprise anchored - chopping up the backbeat - adding counterpoint - pushing it out. He still has it! Vernon- Vernon is probably the best living electric guitarist out there - period. He blew off the roof - wild and controlled - how does he do that? And Modeski - everywhere he needed to be - fills and leads at the same time - building - complementing - - doing Larry Young proud. jThe last time I saw anything this intense and musically adept was early Mahavishnu Orchestra. But these guys take it into new terrain doing music made over 40 years ago. May they keep on doing this for a while!
