About

Rodrigo y Gabriela on Tour

Do you want flamenco with your heavy metal? Acid rock with your classical guitars? If so, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at your service. Known for a double-guitar attack that translates heavy-metal power to nylon-stringed classical guitars played with flamenco fury, Rodrigo y Gabriela are openhearted entertainers whose musical passion bridges classical and contemporary styles to create a world of its own. Alone on stage, they evoke the passion and precision of heavy metal — such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica — and, more recently, the expansive meditations of vintage Pink Floyd. The Mexico City–based guitar duo toured the United States and Europe in 2019 to support their eighth album, Mettavolution.

Rodrigo y Gabriela in Concert

Mexico City natives Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have been perfecting their rapid-fire fusion of Latin harmonies and rhythms with rock structure since the 2006 release of Rodrigo y Gabriela, which included acoustic cover versions of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica's "Orion." After meeting in art school as metal-loving teenagers, the couple forged their musical and emotional alliance while busking through Europe. During an eight-year residence in Galway, Gabriela learned how to transfer the driving bodhran-drum rhythms of Irish folk music to her classical guitar.

The instrumentalists continued to play cover songs and salute their influences on concept albums like 11:11 and 9 Dead Alive. Rodrigo y Gabriela's 2019 release, Mettavolution, was their first in five years. It consists of a handful of original tracks topped off by a 19-minute cover version of "Echoes," the sprawling, subtle and mysterious Pink Floyd epic that took up the entire second side of that band's 1971 album Meddle. The title track of Mettavolution, on the other hand, is a typically dynamic Rodrigo y Gabriela explosion of slaps, strums and rapid-fire runs. The title reflects the duo's belief in evolution through compassion, which here translates into nothing less than sheer rock nirvana.

    Very disappointing!

    by Lou on 4/20/24

I have loved RyG for many years and have seen them live twice before and was dazzled by their virtuosity and brilliance. I went to the show with great anticipation and actually left midway through. All they did was workshop their latest album. This is never a good idea for a performer who fills seats with longtime fans of their core material. Doing a song or two from a new project is expected. But that's not what happened here. Further, this latest project leans heavily towards their more electric side with an emphasis on the metal in their past. IT was ear-crunchingly loud....the songs were not particularly musical or memorable...the unfamiliarity of the repertoire was trying....the audience had bored looks on their faces....and people were leaving as of the 30 minute mark...including me. That is something I have NEVER done in my life. But this was not the show I expected and I felt taken advantage of by the performers.

The experience was fantastic. The ease of parking at the venue was phenomenal. The attendant was friendly and engaging. Getting into the venue was hassle free. Seating was uncomplicated. Rodrigo y Gabriela gave a tremendous performance. The music was exactly what I hoped for as a fan. Thanks for awesome acoustics and a music friendly place to enjoy a show!

    Great music, lots of energy

    by BKS on 7/5/23

What a fantastic show, such great talent and you can listen to two very talented people all night just playing guitars... well not just playing guitars, but getting a bear, rhythm and sound like no one else. Something you gotta see.... and hear...!

    Not what I expected

    by Rog3146 on 7/5/23

I was quite surprised and discouraged when the performance started - I wasn’t expecting a very loud, electric, hard-rockish show. But I hadn’t heard their newest CD, and I wasn’t aware of their recent evolution in style. Thankfully all of the music wasn’t so ‘hard’, and the crowd loved it when they did their acoustic pieces.

    Always So Fun!

    by NormNLisaVA on 7/4/23

We go there about an hour early so we could get a good place in line and standing place upstairs once inside. The app for the bar was super easy to use and the bar lines weren't bad. We could see Rodrigo y Gabriela really well and they rocked the place. They're so talented and entertaining. Love 'em and loved them at the 930 club!

    Amped Up

    by Crikey on 7/3/23

I have liked Rodrigo and Gabriella for years and have seen them in concert twice. This was my third time seeing them and they do not appeal to me any more since they have amped up their sound and introduced an electric guitar. The audience clearly enjoyed it and R&G are as talented as ever, but it’s not my taste in music.

    Great Show

    by Joe B on 7/3/23

The opening was very creative. The use of graphic projections and stage lighting effects were very powerful. The music from the new album is very engaging, But the standard tunes were also welcome. I really liked what some of the new lighting did visually, at one point large shadows of rod and gab were rising each side of the theatre forward of the proscenium. Really great

    Great music

    by ScooterM on 7/3/23

OK, so I love music. Listen to, play it, sing it. Almost any kind. So when I say I loved their energy and skill and sound (not so much the lights). That fact is less impressive than than the fact that my wife, a music “really liked,” was leaning forward, arms glued to the (unfortunately) empty seat in front of her, straining intently, her body grooving to the music. They’re different and they are so good, old school auditorium venue notwithstanding. An eclectic crowd, young, old, richer, poorer, got a great show.

    Terrific Tuesday

    by Rooster on 7/2/23

Arrived to Kings Theater with my wife at 6 pm. Had a couple of drinks and admired the beautiful and historic architecture of the building. Caught the end of the opening act which was good. Main event started around 8:30. Rodrigo and Gabriela put on an amazing show. He played most of their new album which is amazing. They really wanted to get the crowd on their feet but most in attendance sat tight. Towards the end of the show everyone was up on their feet dancing in the aisles. The duo played around 2 hours and show was EXCELLENT!! We had a meet and greet package and Rodrigo and Gabriela could not have been more gracious. ONE GREAT SHOW AND ONE GREAT NIGHT!

    Audience attendant.

    by Quazar on 7/2/23

It was so much more than I expected. They are so talented. At one point, through their guitars, I could sense how the two artists needed each other to create their music. It was original and incredible to experience that.

Rodrigo y Gabriela put on a fantastic show. We had a blast and only wish we'd been in a venue where we could have stood to dance more. I spent the entire performance in awe of their talent. Really great time.
