About

Rodrigo y Gabriela on Tour

Do you want flamenco with your heavy metal? Acid rock with your classical guitars? If so, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at your service. Known for a double-guitar attack that translates heavy-metal power to nylon-stringed classical guitars played with flamenco fury, Rodrigo y Gabriela are openhearted entertainers whose musical passion bridges classical and contemporary styles to create a world of its own. Alone on stage, they evoke the passion and precision of heavy metal — such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica — and, more recently, the expansive meditations of vintage Pink Floyd. The Mexico City–based guitar duo toured the United States and Europe in 2019 to support their eighth album, Mettavolution.

Rodrigo y Gabriela in Concert

Mexico City natives Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have been perfecting their rapid-fire fusion of Latin harmonies and rhythms with rock structure since the 2006 release of Rodrigo y Gabriela, which included acoustic cover versions of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica's "Orion." After meeting in art school as metal-loving teenagers, the couple forged their musical and emotional alliance while busking through Europe. During an eight-year residence in Galway, Gabriela learned how to transfer the driving bodhran-drum rhythms of Irish folk music to her classical guitar.

The instrumentalists continued to play cover songs and salute their influences on concept albums like 11:11 and 9 Dead Alive. Rodrigo y Gabriela's 2019 release, Mettavolution, was their first in five years. It consists of a handful of original tracks topped off by a 19-minute cover version of "Echoes," the sprawling, subtle and mysterious Pink Floyd epic that took up the entire second side of that band's 1971 album Meddle. The title track of Mettavolution, on the other hand, is a typically dynamic Rodrigo y Gabriela explosion of slaps, strums and rapid-fire runs. The title reflects the duo's belief in evolution through compassion, which here translates into nothing less than sheer rock nirvana.

    They Just Kept Rocking

by Cal on 5/8/24State Theatre - Portland

Starting with strong rock and working up their classics, Rodrigo y Gabriela were fantastic. They kept the music coming for well over an hour and a half- they kept switching their guitars, and each time my and I were sure they were going to be done for the night. I really appreciated when Gabriela played on her own; she’s got such a unique style!

    Awful!

by Luisa on 5/7/24State Theatre - Portland

The bass line was so loud that it over-powered the rest of the music. It was uncomfortably loud. I walked out in the middle of the event, enormously disappointed.

    Too much bass, disrespectful audience

by Oz on 5/7/24State Theatre - Portland

I was sitting in the way back, so maybe that was part of the problem, but I found the sound quality to be awful. Way too much bass and the mic seemed to not work well for just normal speaking (without music happening). On top of this, many in the audience around me were talking over the music much of the time. The opener was phenomenal though (no issues with excessive pounding bass there)

    Awesome show

by Logic44 on 5/6/24Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

This was fourth time I have seem Rodrigo y Gabriela and with the possible exception of the Area 52 tour, the finest performance I’ve seem them give. Very psyched they played so much of their latest album. The opening act, OKAN, also gave an excellent performance.

    Rod y Gab

by Scooter on 5/4/24Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

The amazing relatable duo made each member of their adoring audience feel as if they were talking and playing to them directly. They are at their best when playing live and being spontaneous. The whole event, especially the encore, was perfect.

    Excellent Concert

by T Harrington on 5/4/24Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

My wife and I had a great time. It’s been awhile since we were able to go out for the evening because of work and we couldn’t have had a better time at the Rodrigo y Gabriela concert. The venue had great acoustics, was very clean and the staff was exceptional !!!!!!

    Not what I expected

by BillyLou on 5/4/24Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

I saw a video a few years ago of the couple playing beautiful guitar music together. When I went to the show at Ulster, I was very disappointed to see their Beautiful music had evolved into Loud noise.

    Just awesome!!!!!

by Val on 5/4/24Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

This show was one if not THE best concert I’ve gone so far. Not only they nailed it with their performance but also immersed themselves with the crowd. This is a must see concert and I would not hesitate on seeing them again.

    Great show

by Franky on 5/4/24Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

I have mixed feelings about the venue that was picked. It was a seated venue, so it was great to not get blocked, but for the music that they play (as well as the opener), I think their music is better experienced on the floor. It's dancing and headbanging. They did say they normally don't play seated venues. Regardless, their performance was really fun. They got that charisma. They started off with their new stuff but also played their older songs too (which I am very grateful to hear). Okan was beautiful too. afro-cuban music is such good vibing/dancing music, I just wished I could be standing. Audio was great where I was sitting. R&G did a great job interacting with the crowd too. Wonderful show.
