Los Angeles Chargers History

Established in Los Angeles in 1959 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Chargers moved south in 1961 and played in San Diego through the 2016 season. Advancing to five of the first six AFL Championship games ever played, the Chargers claimed the 1963 title and later joined the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970.

Since the merger, the Chargers have appeared in the playoffs 16 times and went on to appear in Super Bowl XXIX in 1999. They have captured 15 division titles to date. In 2017, the Chargers moved back to Los Angeles after 56 seasons in San Diego. The team has a total of 15 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Lance Alworth, Ron Mix, Sid Gillman, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Fred Dean, Bobby Beathard, Don Coryell and Junior Seau.

Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium

The Chargers called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home during the team’s first year of existence in 1959. After relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017, the team played at Dignity Health Sports Park through the 2019 season while SoFi Stadium was under construction. As the first indoor-outdoor stadium in America, SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate up to 70,240 fans for Chargers games. Costing $4.9 billion to construct, it is the most expensive NFL stadium to be built.

Located on the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack, the stadium has played host to a variety of sporting events, including Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, and will be the site for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Games in 2028. It is also the home field for the Rams, making SoFi Stadium one of two stadiums currently shared by two NFL teams.

  • Sofi cheaped out

by SkinsFan on 10/8/25SoFi Stadium - InglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

AMAZING game and seats! Sofi needs INTERACTIVE DIAGRAMS AND SIGNAGE TO FOOD STANDS, tvs in the concessions area (and it’s hallways), and they need to let Uber Eats bring food to ppl’s seats like at Hollywood Bowl. Also, the raffle ppl need to be forbidden from seating areas.

  • Excellent football experience

Got there 2 hours early to tailgate at thunder alley, so many different activities. The game itself was great, everyone at the stadium from both teams was having a good time.

Took my family it was a blast seeing them enjoy the stadium for the first time. Parking was a nightmare though, and we missed kickoff which was a bummer. Won’t be able to go this time, I have 4 tickets don’t know if anyone wants them. If you want ‘em, hit me up. First come, first served.

  • SAINTSINLAX

by RUCK on 8/13/25SoFi Stadium - InglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

I had a good time watching my New Orleans Saints played against the LA Chargers. Even though it was preseason game, and we lost, I still managed to have a good time. The staff was great, and the food was great. The only problem I had was that UberEats voucher didn't work because someone put the wrong voucher in the wrong section.

  • Bucs Fan great game

by Impact on 12/29/24SoFi Stadium - InglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

Charger fans have a great looking home. First time I was able to make it to a Bucs game with the family and it was a great experience, as a fan and as someone who lives in LA to see how well this stadium turned out.
