About

Jacob Collier In Concert

Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.

But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.

By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.

Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.

After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.

    A Magical Evening

    by benn2004 on 5/15/24Moody Amphitheater - Austin

I went wanting to experience the amazing talent that Jacob Collier is. He did not disappoint. While the opening act was perhaps a bit long, Kimbra was entertaining and engaging. It takes a lot of talent for one person to play an hour + set with variety and energy. Then Jacob came on and it was nonstop brilliance. He immediately engaged the Texas crowd with a brief Deep In the Heart of Texas take. He went on to play through a wide range of his tunes and covers, all of which showcased his multi instrumental chops, harmonic genius and soulful connection with the crowd. There were multiple crowd choir experiences and a show stopping 20 minute encore. I left walking on air. Magic, magic, magic, Thank you Jason for the experience.

    In the presence of genius

by NOLA Guy on 5/12/24Fillmore New Orleans - New Orleans

It is really difficult to put into words the effects of a Jacob Collier concert. He is full of energy, warmth, intelligence, and massive talent. His piano playing, his vocals, his harmonies, his direction of the audience choir, everything is on a level that is not seen in other musicians. His most recent album Djesse Vol 4 is a masterpiece and much of the concert was devoted to that. I would propose that his version of “What a Wonderful World” Will never be topped. And the two encores of.”Somebody to Love” and “Moon River” left me even more in awe of him. I would pay to see a Jacob Collier performance any time, any where. If you are not familiar with him and his music, I urge you to do so right now.

    Weird

by Sad on 5/10/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

Vocals so reverberated that they were not understandable. Band was good but performance was a weird mashup of hyperactivity.

    Transcendental

by Sasha on 5/10/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

Do I really need to explain why this experience was incredible?! Ok, well worth it :) Jacob Collier will always impact people and move them profoundly beyond their imagination. I was lifted to the heavenly stars and into child like wonder. The venue was a historical staple of my hometown and the staff surprisingly nice. I've often experienced unfriendly employees at large venues, to receive the opposite treatment only added to my joy. 1000000 percent a moving and unforgettable experience.

    Utter Bliss

by Bryson on 5/10/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

This performance was the best show I've ever had the pleasure of attending. The acoustics were perfect. They were so good, in fact, that I could feel the music in my chest while the earplugs I had bought were rendered unnecessary! Kimbra was everything I wanted in an opening act: She was funny, and her performance was intimate and compelling. Most of her set was just her and a synthesizer/looper, and she squeezed every bit out of that thing. When things didn't quite go as planned and she had a guitar malfunction, she was quick on her feet and ready with another song on the synth. She made the whole performance seem effortless, but her voice is crysta all the while, and her technique was extraordinary. I predicted that I would enjoy it, but now I'm truly a fan of hers. The main attraction blew all expectations out of the water. I didn't know what to expect, but I couldn't have asked for better. It truly was a celebration of music as a concept, and Jacob's passion (and that of his life band/crew) was electric throughout. There were glorious improvisations, thrilling versions of familiar songs, and experimental sounds that sparked excitement and delighted the ears. The show was also a feast for the eyes. Kimbra's set was accompanied by a number of moody spotlights that splashed over her and her flowing, verdant dress. From the second that Jacob's set began, the energy of the lighting was electrifying. There was what I can only describe as a mosaic of bright shapes and colors speckling the stage, and toward the end of the show the disco ball that hung above began to shine in a brilliant display, throwing rays of light in all directions, each one sharply defined as they cut through the subtle atmospheric fog. From the second the show began, I was looking forward to one thing: Jacob's signature choir of the crowd. I am happy to report that he did not disappoint, and I joined voices with the hundreds of other people present at the show. This happened multiple times, and I was smiling from ear to ear each and every time! Bathing in the sound we created was a euphoric experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Finally, I'd be remiss not to to mention the handful of comedic moments present throughout the show. Both Kimbra and Jacob made me feel like I might as well have been the only person in the audience by how personable and comfortable they were. The way they both effortlessly and playfully commanded the attention of the audience was masterful. There were also several encores/fake-outs before the show truly came to a close. I purchased a VIP ticket, and it was worth every penny. The seats alone were fantastic for the price, not I also I received themed guitar picks, a mini kalimba, a tote bag, and a map of all the tracks that were used in the logic session for Bridge Over Troubled Water. I could go on forever and probably reach the 5000 character limit on this review (I'm already over halfway there, and it's safe to say that I'm not starved for things to write about), but I'll bring it to a close by saying that this show was worth every penny. The next time Jacob tours here in Florida, I will not miss it. This show is a must for anyone remotely interested in music and the experience of creating it.

JC is now a matured performer!

by Westcare on 5/9/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The show included an ensemble of people who could all sing and play multiple instruments, and there was a very dense light show that was timed, and there were set props that were beyond my expectations. He did quite a bit of stuff with just him and a more stripped down, electronic, fantastic way, but the whole stage with all the people cranking full blast it was beyond my expectations

    Magic

by M. L. Gimple on 5/9/24Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

Jacob Collier live was more than I could have asked for. I snagged tickets as soon as I saw he'd be in Florida, this was my daughter's first concert and what a way to start out! I can't wait to see him in town again because he is/was fantastic. Him and his whole crew helped weave together some music magic!
