About
Houston Rockets History
The Rockets joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1967, when they were located in San Diego. They moved to Houston in 1971 and had a string of playoff appearances, but only made it past the second round once. Until 1984, that is — when the Rockets selected future Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. In just his second season, Olajuwon led the Rockets to an NBA Finals appearance, where they lost to the Boston Celtics in six games. That was part of a stretch in which the Rockets made the playoffs 15 times in 16 years.
The high point of Olajuwon's career came in the 1993–94 and 1994–95 seasons, when he led the Rockets to the franchise's only two NBA Championships. In 1993–94, the Rockets needed seven games to defeat the Phoenix Suns in the second round, then came back from a 3-2 deficit in the NBA Finals to defeat the New York Knicks in seven games. Olajuwon won league MVP, Finals MVP and Defensive Player of the Year that season.
The Rockets followed that by winning another title the next year. This time, they coasted through the NBA Finals, sweeping the Orlando Magic — led by future Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal — in four games.
The Rockets have not been back to the NBA Finals since 1995, but they have maintained a steady stream of success. After acquiring James Harden in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012, they made the playoffs every season until 2020–21. The Rockets won the Southwest Division in 2019–20, but lost in the Western Conference Semifinals to the Los Angeles Lakers.

by AlexDutt on 10/12/12State Farm Arena - HidalgoRating: 5 out of 5Houston rockets vs Oklahoma City thunder was amazing! I like how we get to see the nba play some games down in the valley!
Just a great time!
by izzy48 on 10/7/10State Farm Arena - HidalgoRating: 5 out of 5The game was secondary to all of the action. It was great seeing all of the "personalities" (i.e. Yao). There was action always going on.
oh well,
by ldlc on 10/7/10State Farm Arena - HidalgoRating: 4 out of 5I was hoping the rockets would have won, but it was good to see a NBA game live and close to home. This was our first NBA game so it was great.
I loved it when howard threw his shoes in crowd

Rockets vs. Magic: Great venue
by LarryZa on 10/7/10State Farm Arena - HidalgoRating: 4 out of 5The venue's size made it to where all seats had a great view.
Rockets/Magic Great Game
by Eatit1987 on 10/7/10State Farm Arena - HidalgoRating: 4 out of 5Awesome evening watching NBA players in the Rio Grande Valley. State Farm Arena was very well organized except for the few ushers that did not understand English. We don't get many opportunities to view NBA players up close and this was an excellent game. Orlando had starters playing in the 4th quarter so even though the floor seats were ridiculously expensive it was a nice experience.

Houston Vs. Orlando was a great, exciting, entertaining, well organized event...thanks!

by Anonymous on 10/28/09Dodge Arena - HidalgoRating: 4 out of 5Pretty cool game, its not everyday we get an event like this in south Texas. I can tell we are definately starved for entertainment. Every seat at Dodge Arena is a good seat so it was quite an experience.

Bringing that kind of talent to Valley was AWESOME
by MsNBA on 10/9/09Dodge Arena - HidalgoRating: 5 out of 5The excitement leading up to game day was just awesome! For those who were able to go to the Convention Center and be part of the activities it was a moment to cherish. Game day was everything I thought it would be and more. People here in the Valley got a feel of what it is like to be at an NBA game if they have never been to one. Do this more often, it was great to see that the arena was sold out for such an event.

Awesome Proball in my backyard.
by Keebler19 on 10/8/09Dodge Arena - HidalgoRating: 5 out of 5The Exhibition game felt like a once in a life time event. I have been to NBA games before, but never so close to home. For once it felt good not to worry about hotel expenses or planning around work to travel and make it out to a game. It was really exciting to see alot of my favortie athletes my husband and I had a great time. We hope there are more events like this in the future.
Best time in a while
by hal9000v2 on 10/8/09Dodge Arena - HidalgoRating: 5 out of 5Seats were really great and game was really good for a expo. I never thought I would see the Celtics living on South Padre Island. Please do more of these events....
Totally Awesome!!
by GinobilisGirl on 10/8/09Dodge Arena - HidalgoRating: 5 out of 5This game was great. The teams played with such intensity throughout the whole game. The electricity within the arena was tremendous. They should make this a yearly event. Go Celtics!!
- by pumapride on 10/8/09Dodge Arena - HidalgoRating: 3 out of 5
Boston brought future Hall of Famers like Garnett, Wallace, Pierce, Rondo, etc. Houston brought former Viper standout Brooks. Boston let Houston win in the end due to the fact it was an exhibition game and they were suppose to be the hometown favorites.
