ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN IN CONCERT:
Formed in the late-'70s wake of punk's first wave, Echo & the Bunnymen forged a unique fusion of post-punk, new wave, and neo-psychedelia that established them as pioneers of a new direction in British rock. Today the band's moody, sophisticated sound is as compelling as ever, and their spellbinding live shows are the perfect place to experience it in the flesh. Whether brooding frontman Ian McCulloch is belting out classics from seminal 1984 album Ocean Rain or performing new material from 2014's Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen never fail to mesmerize with muscular musicianship and intense performances on their unforgettable tours.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking their name from a list of nonsensical monikers suggested by a friend. The band made their debut in 1979 with "The Pictures on My Wall", released on the now-legendary Mute Records imprint. Their 1980 album debut Crocodiles was a critical and commercial success, cracking the UK Top 20 and setting the stage for the success of sophomore album Heaven Up Here, which reached the Top 10 in 1981. Their chart run continued in 1983 with third album Porcupine, the vessel for hit singles "The Back of Love" and "The Cutter" and predecessor to the band's landmark 1984 album Ocean Rain, widely considered by critics as the pinnacle of their '80s output. After taking a hiatus between 1993-1996 the band reformed with a vengeance, scoring another Top 10 hit with "Nothing Lasts Forever" and delivering a powerful series of performances on tour. With their 12th studio album Meteorites hitting shelves in 2104, Echo & the Bunnymen have fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows.Ā Previously, Echo & the Bunnymen has sold out venues to capacity, like The Fillmore (Minneapolis) and Fox Theater (Oakland).
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Amazing show. Ian's voice has not changed a bit. The band sounds the same as the first time I heard them. Bravo!"
"The Bunnymen did amazing renditions of their albums. The improvisation on Crocodiles brought back many great live memories of Bunnymen past shows."
"It was an amazing show. The band sounded incredible and Ian was very much a dynamic presence. Two complete albums were played, along with encores, so it was definitely a show to remember."
Sounded like he was on pain killers and talked wayy to much in between songs to 2 bimbos in the audience. Very disappointing.
Been a fan for decades and well worth the wait in Mountain View, Saratoga. Rumor is there is a more extensive tour coming and I'll be sure to see as many as possible
I love Echo and the Bunnymen. I thought it was a great concert! Not sure why so many not good reviews. Saw them at HOB Houston. Great venue. Iām loving all these ā80ās bands touring. Hope they come back!! I want to see them again!
Show was great dispute his back issue.. he pulled off an awesome show.
It was really lovely to see Echo and the Bunnymen. They weren't one of the bands I saw growing up, not sure why, so I was really pleased to get a ticket to go. I liked being able to hear all my old favorites, but the experience was so-so. I understand Ian McCulloch had been ill earlier in this concert tour and that the Dallas date was a reschedule. It did seem he wasn't feeling well, there wasn't much energy or enthusiasm in the show. Personally, I'd have preferred to wait for this concert until he was feeling 100% better.
First time at the House of Blues in Boston ( was last in the building when it was the Avalon I think) My partner is the bigger fan and we enjoyed the show. The band was exceptionally tight. Ian's voice was a little hoarse by the end of the evening but we had an overall great time. Would have preferred them to do more original stuff instead of the Doors and other covers that sprinkled the performance hence the 4 /5.
I know the original guys weren't there, but at least introduce us to your new guys.
Well, the title pretty much sums up the energy. Ian had an amazing voice...just not much happening on stage to grab crowd enthusiasm. I know, every show can't be a banger. They tried. It was fine. Better than being at home.
Echo and the Bunnymen had really weird and cool videos on Mtv back in the early eighties, so when I saw them forty years later they were awesome!
Overall a great concert. However, it was hard to understand Ian McCulloch and a bit disappointed he had to sit through nearly the whole set. I hope he recovers soon. Good show nonetheless.
Everything was great!!! Fantastic venue and the band did not disappoint!!! Awesome show!!!
It was OK seeing them again, not nearly as much as other similar bands, however, who come through from time-to-time. Definitely not nearly the performance they had at the Bronco Bowl way back when, but that was expected. The show was OK. Not great. The set was uninspired led by its frontman, who too seemed to be uninspired. Ian, of course, is impossible to understand, though I'm sure it's part of his schtick. Whatever the reason, when he speaks to the audience it does little to excite or incite. They sounded good but the set list and order was curious. Will is flawless and still jams.
Ian gave an incredible performance and sent me back to the days when bands gave special attention to the city they were in. Simply an outstanding show!
Have seen the band 7 times, Fillmore in SF, Radio City in NYC, HOB Cleveland and 4 times in Dallas. Wasnāt expecting a great show due to Ianās illness and bad reviews but I thought they got it all together for a strong show in Dallas. Will still a great lead guitar and Ian has always been what a frontman should be. Getting older and maybe time to just do shows across the pond. Had a great time and good luck to the boys going forward. BB
Iām glad I got a chance to catch Echo and the Bunnymen. They were on my top 5 to see and I knew time was running out.
As a longtime fan of Echo and the Bunnymen, I've only begun to see them this century. Sadly, their show last month was postponed due to illness in the band. I thought they may cancel. Friday night the band brought their classic 80's tunes triumphantly to the present day. The Bunnymen never sound dated. Ian's voice was in fine form and Will Sergeant's guitar displayed why this band is still relevant today. The backing band carried the core members through every song as if they were originals from back in the day. My wife and I are looking forward to the next time we can experience their songs live.
The opening band in Boston HOB sucked! Horrible! As far as ETBM, the band sounded good, but Ian McColloch was a train wreck. Either too lazy or too wasted to stand, had 12 drinks going on the speaker next to him. Vocals were sketchy. The dark mystic theater exacerbated his low energy. Major bummer!
The venue was perfect for Echo and the Bunnymen concert. Clean venue and nice staff.
Average concert. After the original concert date being rescheduled at the last minute I was hoping for more
Echo sounded absolutely amazing on Wednesday night! Ian, as always, sounds great and the entire band seemed very "in sync" with each other. Sound levels were spot on, and not deafening. Whoever the sound engineer was did a great job. This was my first time seeing Echo live, and would do it again in a heartbeat. So happy they stopped in Boston during their tour. Great experience at the house of blues as always!
