COEUR DE PIRATE IN CONCERT:
The tradition of French chanson is alive and well with Canadian singer-songwriter Coeur de Pirate, aka Beatrice Martin. The young ingenue's relaxed, unaffected voice is reminiscent of '60s French pop icons like France Gall and Brigitte Bardot, and she reinforces the comparison with mod hairdos and retro style. In concert she sings her romantic songs while seated at a grand piano, conjuring up arpeggiated melodies while a backing band of guitar, bass, and drums provides accompaniment. Whether she's singing French-language favorites like "Comme des Enfants" and "Adieu" or chatting casually with ticket buyers between songs, Coeur de Pirate always impresses with her dynamic voice, passionate lyrics, and effortless style.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Quebec-born Beatrice Martin took up piano at age three and began formal study at conservatory at age nine. After spending five years there she began playing keyboard with various Canadian groups including post-hardcore outfit December Strikes First and indie pop group Bonjour Brumaire. She made her solo debut as Coeur de Pirate in 2008 with a self-titled album of spare, straightforward songs showcasing her voice and piano. In 2009 her song "Ensemble" was featured in a viral video made by Quebec City photographer Francis Vachon, and the resulting attention led to coverage on numerous media outlets including Good Morning America and Perez Hilton. Her rise continued in 2011 with her sophomore album Blonde, which she supported with extensive touring until she went on hiatus to give birth to a daughter. Martin returned to the spotlight in 2013 to record an album of covers for the fifth season of the popular Canadian TV drama series Trauma. Since then she has continued to shine bright on tour while also working on her highly anticipated follow-up to 2011's Blonde.

Shorter program than anticipated, yet glad to see Beatrice back in NYC.
This was probably the best concert experience I’ve ever had! She was amazing and considering what genre it is, I felt completely safe inside the venue. I’m definitely planning to attend other events when I get a chance to travel again!
Béatrice Martin looked like she was having so much fun on stage! I went to see her at the Lionel-Groulx theatre last year and now I saw her again at the Metropolis and she looked even more comfortable with the new moves she incorporates on stage. Her dress was gorgeous and she's so adorable!!! She even shed a few tears at the end. I'm guessing it had to do with being back where she launched her tour. Oh, and lets not forget about the decor: the animated backgrounds were gorgeous!!! The only negative aspect was that the sound quality wasn't perfect. The noise created by all the instruments often muffled Coeur de Pirate's voice.
Coeur de Pirate performed amazingly! I thought I'd be over my head without par lez vous-ing french but it was still awesome. I can't wait for her to be in town again or maybe save some money and make a trip out to another performance. She was so sweet afterward that it made my Summer and the top three for the year so far.
