Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
It was an amazing show! I would HIGHLY recommend any Cirque show!
It was the 3rd Cirque du Soleil that I have seen. OVO was one of the best yet! Glad we all went. And Dickies Arena was fabulous!
The show could not have been any better or more entertaining!
It was a good show, however, it seems like I’ve seen it all before. I felt it was geared towards kids. I wish I had known that. Insects were talking in babyish babble. Although it was funny to kids, it wasn’t to me. Too much time given to insects talking nonsense. Other acts were great but nothing I haven’t seen before. Having said that, I still enjoyed the show. Dickies arena in Fort Worth surprisingly nice, and no seat is bad.
We had a great time and the venue was very intimate. Amazing performances by everyone.
I bought my tickets online unknowingly through the ticketmaster scalping site (beware!!). It was legit but they charged 2.5 times the regular ticket price. I contacted the real Ticketmaster and let them know of this and that I was ripped off for my birthday show (this was my birthday prezzie and celebration) and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I was really looking forward to this and eventually just accepted that i was scammed. The day if the show I went to scan my ticket and I was told that my seats had been upgraded to front row!!! Ticketmaster saved the day and restored my faith in humanity - it wasn't up to them to fix this problem but they did... Thank you for a very memorable birthday!! Ps. The show was so cute and the costumes were fantastic.. I would pay to see it again...
For a Cirque du Soleil, it was mediocre. Compared to everything else, it was amazing.
I have seem a few traveling Cirque shows. This was my least favorite. Too slow in most parts. Acrobatic routine above the net was super great. Costumes were good but not what I expected.
Too much insect talking and definitely not enough of what Cirque does; performing
Love the artists, acrobats, customs, theme. An amazing experience! I've been dreaming to see them since I was a little girl.
Some of the acrobatics are the time filling repeats we’ve all gotten used to, but some of the acts are breathtaking. The big complaint of the show is the made-up bug language that you had to endure in between. Had they done that musically or with any human language, it would have been down right charming, but the squeaks and squeals were hard to sit through.
The show was really entertaining, the acrobatics mixed with the more humorous bits made for a good show. I just wish it had been an hour longer!
Outstanding performance worth every dollar spend, deeply recomended
The talent, ability, strength and discipline show by this team is simply amazing. Great show.
I've seen Ovo in the tent show as well as multiple times in arena shows. I keep going back to see it for the unique costumes and wonderful acrobatics. I highly recommend you see it
So intense and impressive!!! Will recommend and look forward to seeing again :)
We loved it! From start to finish we were so very impressed by show and the performers!
The show was very entertaining but we feel we missed something seeing the first show since we see scenes on the news promoting the show and they acts we did not actually see. Does the same show have different versions of the same show? The parking and organizing of getting people in and out was great. Our only dislike (no fault of the show), was a couple with a pair of young boys who sat behind us and yelled at the top of their lungs right into our ears as if they were at some sporting event. That made us wanting to leave sooner than later since they did it all throw the acts and not wait for the applauds.
Recently went to OVO in Dickies Arena. It was a great show and exceeded our expectations.
Great show, great venue. Arena is a grat place to see any show.
