About Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs is located in Louisville, Kentucky. The 147-acre venue serves as home to the annual Kentucky Derby and hosts three thoroughbred horse racing events during spring, September and other fall months. The Kentucky Derby is held on the one-mile dirt oval track, which is featured alongside a seven-furlong turf course. Over 5,000 horses cycle through Churchill Downs on a yearly basis for the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and other thoroughbred races.
The legendary track is known as much for its architecture and fashion as its events. The Twin Spires towering over the grandstand is perhaps Churchill Downs' most prominent aesthetic feature. Other than the grandstand, racegoers can sit in Millionaires Row, Sky Terrace, Turf Club or Clubhouse areas. The Kentucky Derby has become synonymous with 170,000-plus spectators arriving in lavish hats, dresses and suits, adding character to a spectacle that already has the longest-running history of any continual American sporting event in history.
Churchill Downs has welcomed the Breeders' Cup World Championship, a two-day, season-ending extravaganza involving horses, jockeys, trainers and owners worldwide, on eight separate occasions.
History of Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs was built upon 80 acres purchased by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. from his uncles, Henry and John Churchill, in 1872. The debut race was held May 17, 1875, and consisted of the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and Clark Handicap. The inaugural Kentucky Derby was captured by Aristides, while Bonaventure won the first ever overall race held at the track.
Churchill Downs has always held a certain pedigree, although the track didn't turn its first profit until 1903. Eventually, in 1938, Matt Winn was named president and dedicated a committee to turn Churchill Downs into a nonprofit that donated $1.5 million over 10 years. Decades later, another substantial change took place as president Steve Sexton initiated a renovation process during the years 2002-03. In 2009, Kevin Flanery took over as president where he remained in the position until 2020. Michael W. Anderson was named the 14th president of Churchill Downs Racetrack on December 22, 2020.
Wonderful time on that day Great seats fun experience overall. Tickets were very afforfable for the special event.
Like the venue and the excitement. View from near the finish is great but all points are very good.
I was pretty disappointed in the venue overall. Cafeteria-like areas with crazy long lines, numerous restroom stalls that did not lock, puddles all over restroom floors, overflowing trash cans, and some unfriendly staff. Keeneland in Lexington Ky is hands down better in every area than Churchill Downs. We expected better, especially for Derby weekend.
Live Music was an awesome touch to Thurby. Hope they continue moving forward. Was disappointed that the venue did cash only.
Great Day! Great Venue! Great People! Great horse racing! Good food! Strong drinks!
Price gouging at its finest for Thursday before Derby. Overpay for the right to lose money betting the races.
Already drove lower class of people out now going to drive middle class out. Seniors can’t make it because of too much walking. Parking is just for the rich
As a horse lover, I had a dream of going to Churchill Downs. Seeing the twin spires in person was so exciting. I opted for a Barn and Backside guided tour which was the absolute best part of the day. Our tour guide shared information that took us behind the scenes of the race track. We visited during Derby week so there was lots of activity and things to see. Going to The Kentucky Derby Museum next door is a must see.
Girls trip brought us to KY. We wanting a tour of Churchill Downs but soon realized a race was going on instead. Got tickets to section 117. Perfect place to sit and see the finish line. Going earlier in the week made a great experience without having the large crowd. The workers at the counters taught us all about how to place bets.
Easy peasy with the ticket on my cell. Fascinator was on-point! Remembered my flip flops too.
Churchill downs was awesome for a day at the track derby 🐎 week With my friends. Transferring tickets to multiple people was a Nightmare
Very nice, but would be nice to have warm toasted mini waffles(were not browned at all), also some scrabbled eggs were sitting in egg liquid at some stations.
I originally didn’t like the idea of parking at expo lot., but it wasn’t bad I enjoyed the races, etc Will more tickets, GEN ADMISSION, look to add inclusive beverages and food? For opening night?
The opening night card was a bust. Only 3 horses in the feature. Most seating is now reserved for rich tourists. Drink prices are outrageous. Churchill Downs should be ashamed of selling an inferior race card while gouging visitors
Parking was a bust, pulled into Turquoise lot and was redirected to Expo parking, got to Expo Parking and redirected back to Turquoise lot. Churchill Downs did not have a good parking plan. Train your bartenders. Newbie was having to read directions to make an Old Fashion. Worst Old Fashion ever.
This was our first time at opening night & we had such an amazing time! Entry was fast and painless. Once we got through the gates, there were tons of photo opportunities set up! Lots is beer vendors set up everywhere! Live music! We purchased the Skye Terrace seats and I will never purchase anything different in the future. The staff was so sweet and helpful getting us to the right place (Churchill is big!) and guiding us with placing bets! The Skye Terrace was classy, the food served was delicious, there was a private bar, private betting booths, and balcony to watch the races. It was such a fun experience
Let me start by saying that I’ve been to Churchill Downs a few times for general racing and have always had a great time and was looking forward to Opening Night. In 2020 I had purchased tickets for my large group to sit at a club level table with dinner and access to seats outside. Covid cancelled the event and my tickets were refunded (thank you Ticketmaster). Fast forward to fall 2021 - attempted to purchase Opening Night tickets as soon as they were made available, but found very few ticket options left for my large group to sit together. No big deal, so ended up purchasing tickets in Section 323. I had no idea that the “party” on Opening Night occurs at the Grand Entrance/Paddock area, and that very few seats actually get used. Apparently Churchill Downs only caters to those who purchase seats, but don’t actually sit in them, as our location amenities included a bar that was “not fully stocked or ready” as admitted by the bar staff, restrooms that were in a complete a state of demolition (not marked as out of order even) causing us to have to walk a distance to the nearest usable facility. We also had no food in our area. We felt totally scammed by the Downs and it definitely put a damper on our racing atmosphere. Yes, perhaps we could have moved to a better section that wasn’t being used, but we had a large group, with one gentleman needing to use a cane. It would have been worse if we had to move again because a few others returned to claim their seats. I wish I could post pictures of the restrooms in our area - just unbelievable! But I’m sure everything will be nice and shiny for the Oaks and Derby, when people actually sit in their seats. Churchill Downs can do better! Would give 0 stars if I could.
Good food, great folks, and plenty of booze. Bet on your favorite horses to win and enjoy all of the amenities that the Downs has to offer.
I really miss the different bands and parties. This year was kind of boring.
We selected covered seats in section 117. Unfortunately there was a large pillar blocking our view of the track and the overhang prevented us from seeing the video boards in the infield. There was a tv monitor directly in front of our seats. Unfortunately the monitor was displaying another race track that wasn't racing. I approached a Churchill Downs employee twice and requested that the monitor be switched to show racing at Churchill Downs. The monitors in the sections to the right and left of us were set to Churchill Downs, so I know it was possible. The employee was very nice and professional and I heard him make the request (twice) on his radio. Unfortunately the tv monitor was never changed. I recommend that Churchill Downs and/or Ticketmaster alert ticket buyers to blocked and/or restricted views.
