Alice Merton In Concert
Going on tour doesn't present any major challenges for rising star Alice Merton, and you might even say she's been preparing for it her entire life. In fact, the singer's breakout hit, "No Roots," was written in response to a childhood that involved moving 12 times in 24 years as the daughter of a British mining consultant and a German mother with wanderlust. Merton's self-released upbeat synth-pop track translated the singer's mixed feelings about her nomadic family life into an uplifting viral anthem, setting the stage for the early-2019 release of her debut album, Mint.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1993, Merton spent her childhood in Connecticut and her early teens in Ontario, Canada, before returning to Germany with her family. She lived in England, where her parents finally settled, but returned to Germany yet again to study composition and songwriting at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim, where she met members of her future band.
Merton turned heads with her appearance on German pop group Fahrenhaidt's 2015 album, The Book of Nature. The following year, she won Hamburg's "Jugend kulturell Förderpreis" (Youth Cultural Promotion Award) for most talented acoustic-pop newcomer.
Merton moved to Berlin and recorded "No Roots," which she released on her own Paper Plane label in 2016. The single became an international hit thanks to its disco groove, rocking guitar, and whooping chorus, with more than 125 million streams to date, and it reached No. 1 on U.S. Alternative, Triple A, and Rock Airplay charts. The EP No Roots followed in 2017 and contained the grunge-pop track "Lash Out" and energetic motivational anthem "Hit the Ground Running."
In late 2018, after guesting on "Half As Good As You" by British pop sensation Tom Odell, the Berlin-based citizen of the world released "Funny Business" and "Why So Serious?," dance-floor friendly tracks from her forthcoming Mint that provided still more hints as to what was going on inside this talented pop nomad.
Loved her energy. Can’t wait to hear her new songs.
