From multiple Grammy Award®-winning songwriter dolly parton, the Tony Award®-winning director of Wicked and the Tony-winning choreographer of In The Heights comes 9 to 5: The Musical, a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. This all-new musical comedy based on the hit movie features the blockbuster title song plus an exciting new score of 18 original numbers by Dolly Parton that mix Broadway and pop with her signature witty lyrics.
Set in 1979 - when Wall Street was hot and 8-tracks were cool - 9 to 5: The Musical is about three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do - even in a man's world! Multiple Emmy Award® winner and Tony nominee Allison Janney (Juno, "The West Wing") stars as Violet, the wise-cracking ringleader who joins co-workers Judy and Doralee (Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty of Wicked) to turn the tables on their obnoxious boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Tony nominee Marc Kudisch).
Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, 9 to 5: The Musical is about teaming up and getting credit... it's about kicking butt and taking care of business... and it's about to open on Broadway!
The preformers were excellent. The music was great. Would love to see it again
I enjoyed the upbeat music. There was a distinct similarity in tempo between the title song and some of the other musical numbers.
9 to 5 was a fun show to see with girlfriends! The show was a little bit of naughty and a lot of fun. The three female leads had powerhouse voices, and the choreography was very well done. Thanks for an entertaining show!
The show was so much fun and lively. Every cast member was unbelievable in how they handled their roles. We loved the curtain with all of the events of 1979.....we only were stumped on a couple of the pictures. The music was totally Dolly Parton, which made it even more enjoyable. I had concerns about a stage adaptation because I've seen the movie probably at least 10 times and wasn't sure how some of it could be protrayed on a small stage. Not to worry, it was superb.
Me and my mom enjoyed it immensely!! It was very entertaining and delightful!!
Great music and lyrics. Musical was pretty much based on the movie so no surprises.
If you loved the movie, you'll love the musical. It's the classic story that still resonates today. There are some new twists that fit the original and evolve to the stage. It's a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it.
As I was leaving the theatre I heard a woman tuen to her husband and say "Well! It wasn't Les Miserable". She was right but she clearly had missed the point! Don't expect big budget special effects, don't expect a lavish production BUT you can expect to start smiling from the prologue to epilogue (both delivered by Dolly Parton). If your a fan of the film you'll love it as it stays VERY faithful to it. If you like camp theatre you'll also love it! If you love both you are guaranteed a great night!
Even though 9 to 5: The Musical wasn't a Broadway smash , I had been anticipating this show a lot, as I love Dolly Parton, and loved the movie. It opened with excitement..... then, a bit of a lull, to the degree that I thought...."Oh no, could be a dud." The "Mr. Heart" number was a let down. Then....about a third into it....it really picked up. There were several new memorable numbers. "Dora-Lee" made me nervous at first, but pulled it out brilliantly. "Violet" was terrific. "Judy was phenomenal. I was impressed with the pacing and set design. Very clever & creative. By the end of the show, I was glad I came. It was cute. Dolly's video cameos at first seemed cheesy, but ended up pulling me in. By thend, I was clapping and singing along. Overall....worth it.
Excellant show and closely monitored the movie but was different . Very good for all to attend .
The play was great! Lots of energy and great singing!
The second the Dolly character opened her mouth it was over for me. Terrible production - we walked out. Do not waste your money!!!
"9 to 5" was very good. Having the video with Dolly Parton speaking added anticipation to the performance. The performers and musicians were very skilled. I loved the music.
It was a great evening and a lot of fun! I am very happy that I went ahead and saw the show. I was a little worried about whether or not I would like the show. The music was fantastic and a lot of fun. The music has been stuck in my head ever since I saw the show, The acting was good, and the dancing was fun. It was an overall fun show that will brighten anyones day!
9 to 5 was well done and strong cast. Good dancing. Story line was weak, but presented as well as can be expected. Singing voices very good.
First act seemed a little shaky, but once the cast warmed up they were good. I felt all the characters played the actresses from the movie very well. I think about 2 acts could have been eliminated, as it made the show a bit too long and wasn't really needed: The "love"scene with Violet an the Accountant and the scene with Judy and her Ex, went too long, but it needed to be in the show, just a bit too long. Ros' scene RE: her crush with Mr Heart was hilarious! Loved it! She did great! Nice touch having Dolly introduce and conclude the show :)
I was very impressed by the humor and the wonderful singing talents of the three ladies as well as the boss. Very impressive was actress Jane Blass as Margaret the office drunk. She was hilarious in every scene.
The movie was great--it should never have been made into a play. The first act was too long--it could have been reduced by 30 minutes. The songs were not something that you would leave the theater with any rememberance. The second act brought out the actors real talent and vocal abilities, as well as, a wonderful ending. Many patrons left after the first act, which we were going to do, however, out of courtesy to the performers- we stayed. The dancers were maginificent!!
This play by Dolly Parton was difficult to stay awake in at times. The movie was a cool revenge story, but it just doesn't translate onto the stage. The show seemed to run long, as everything that needed to be done could have been done in one act (if even that). The slapstick comedy seemed forced onto the stage rather than having it incorporated in the story. The three leads were actually very good, and their talent was the highlight of the show. Another plus was the fact that you could hear that Dolly actually wrote the songs, as some of them were in her style, and nearly all of them were well done. Overall, however, I would tell people to pass on this show. I nearly left at intermission, and I saw several people hoping in cabs, so I know I wasn't the only one with these thoughts. I bought discount tickets in Chicago, and still think I over-paid.
Diana DeGarmo was phenomenal! Loved the way they tied in Dolly Parton's introduction. Defintely worth seeing, well done!
