8ball & MJG In Concert
Southern rap from the 1990s may as well be its own planet of music, and two of that planet's leaders are surely 8Ball & MJG, the American hip-hop duo from Memphis, Tennessee. After meeting at Ridgeway Middle School in 1984, they toiled in the underground rap scene for years, eventually striking big with a decade-long run of hard-hitting albums.
Their first coup was the underground hit Listen to the Lyrics, released in 1993. Two years later they dropped their first official LP for Suave House, Comin' Out Hard, an early blockbuster in the Southern rap genre. It reached No. 40 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Riding the wave of that hit, the group released On Top of the World in 1995, which positively blew them up: it reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The album featured E-40 and Mac Mall, as well as former Geto Boy Big Mike. Its cover was designed by Pen & Pixel Graphics, who would go on to work with No Limit Records and Cash Money Records. Their cut-and-paste style is instantly recognizable to anyone who listened to any Southern rap in the ‘90s or ‘00s. On Top of The World also contained 8Ball & MJG's first charting single, "Space Age Pimpin," which reached No. 58 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks list and charted at No. 22 on Hot Rap Singles. Riding the fire of that album, they both released solo albums in the coming years. 8Ball's Lost went platinum, reaching No. 5 on Billboard 200 and No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. It featured Too $hort and MJG.
The group would go on to be featured on Three 6 Mafia's "Stay Fly" in 2005, which peaked at No. 13 on the Hot 100, becoming one of the biggest hits any of the rappers had seen. In 2008, 8Ball & MJG signed with T.I.'s label Grand Hustle, releasing Ten Toes Down in 2010. It reached No. 36 on the Billboard 200 and featured T.I., Slim Thug, Bun B, and others.
Amazing the show was outstanding. The crowd was exciting and the atmosphere was great.
I’ve been to hundreds of concerts, this was my 1st experience at Maple House, it was so easy to maneuver through, we were able to bring our own cooler which was a plus there were plenty of room between rows to comfortably place your cooler get up and dance… Now the concert, some of the artists I could have done without, but this should have been 8ball, MJG and Bun B concert they kept the crowd on the feet so many hits omg!! Lit. I must say I was highly disappointed with Goodie Mob performance, I just wasn’t feeling it period. They kept sitting down seems like the music wasn’t put together in the right order , I know I sat down when they were on stage … shout out to the dj that had the crowd leaning and rocking (snap) , laffy taffy, walking it out omg just ultimate” litty n the city”
I enjoyed the entire concert! I truly had the time of my life! The DJs made the experience even more enjoyable! Definitely looking forward to my next concert!
The show was a complete vibe!! Brought back so many memories. Felt so good being amongst this crowd. Every performance was amazing.
The sound system for this event was horrible. We couldn’t hear much of anything for lawn seats. We attended the same event last year with same seating and the sound was great, but not this time. Please get better sound for next event.
The concert was amazing!! All was great! The venue, the show, and the show was very organized!
THE HIP-HOP 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT WITH 8BALL&MJG WAS AMAZING!!!!
great artist I’ve been rocking with 8ball & MJG for ever
8ball and MJG killed it! It was really good to see Goodie Mob and DJ Quik! Everyone did a great job! What a great way to celebrate 50 years of Hip Hop!
Groups were great, everyone showed up, concert started on time, facility was nice and clean, everyone was free to be themselves
This was one of my husband’s Father Dau gifts and he had a ball!!
The side entrance to the lawn was a good move. Its better then going all the way around walking up the hill.
8ball and mjg need to connect more with the crowd, get more involved with crowd participation. We want to know that you see us. Don’t just come out sing your hit songs and not get involved with the crowd on a intimate level. Overall they have done better in past shows.
Great Concert! Venue was great and the acts were all on point!!! Special Shout Out to the home team Goodie Mob! 8 Ball & MJG haven’t lost a step and Bun B killed it as usual. West coast repped with DJ Quick and The Dog Pound!!!
This was everything!!! I didn't want to leave!! Wish Ceelo had done more songs.
The show was billed to start at 7pm, so I arrived at 6:50pm at the main entrance, but it was blocked off by city police. I paid for VIP parking, but had to drive around looking for the VIP parking entrance for almost an hour before I could park my car. So I missed a good hour of the show. Need to have VISIBLE vip parking signs posted prior to the event, to prevent having to circle around 3 times, to "spot where to enter" for VIP parking!
The venue was nice. Lawn was excellent. The sound system need upgrade with the lawn seating. Speakers in for top lawn seating. Some screens for the top open lawn.
The performance was outstanding. True legends performed their best moments and greatest hits. Mable House Barnes Amphitheater had easy entrance and exit strategies. The layout was fantastic and the crowd was superb. What more could one ask for with the price? Well done!
