About

Heart-pounding, fast-paced and adrenaline-seeking are all ways to describe the new hockey phenomenon known as 3ICE. 3ICE is a new 3-on-3 ice hockey league traveling across the United States and Canada this summer. Unlike traditional hockey, 3ICE only allows six players and one goalie on the team and three players and one goalie on the ice at any given time. The game is structured with two, 8-minute halves with a running clock (the clock only stops for injuries and penalties). The league consists of six teams, all coached by former NHL® players and Stanley Cup® winners.

Each week, 3ICE has a tournament-style, winner-take-all event; starting with three opening games, then two semi-final games and a final championship game. Focusing on high intensity play and scoring, every penalty is issued as a penalty shot for the other team. The league has a no hitting and no fighting rule to emphasize the players' stick handling, passing and shooting. This expedited game highlights the players speed, agility and hockey IQ making it a thrill for all ages.

One fan wrote in a review, after watching the game with their children, "...the 3ICE experience was probably the most I have ever seen them enjoy watching any games. The pace was so fast with lots of high danger scoring opportunities."

Founded by E.J. Johnson, son of former NHL® goalie and Coach, Ed Johnson; 3ICE has currently raised over $9.5M. One of the goals of this league is to combine technology and sports. 3ICE is in their rookie year; so their tech is a work in progress.

Eventually, the league is working on innovations such as allowing fans to pick who takes the penalty shot via the 3ICE app and RFID chips in the puck, and they'll also be able to decide the stick and equipment the players use. The league currently has a 4k on ice camera operated by a skating cameraman. These innovations will allow fans to be directly involved with the game play, while seeing the real-time speed of players and their shots. The incentive to win is part of the fun. Each player is paid based on the PGA model (the more you win the more you are paid).

3ICE is also partnered with the TV providers CBS, RDS, TSN, and ESPN, and will be available to watch at home for all.

    3ice

    by Steve on 7/15/23

It was an awesome experience. Have been watching, playing, coaching hockey for over 30 years and have been to many games at every professional level over the years. 3ice may be one of the most entertaining hockey experiences I’ve been to.

    Very weak event

    by The Jeff on 7/15/23

We went to the 3 Ice event in 2022. It consisted of 6 or 7 games....this year, there were only 4 teams and only 4 games. I will not be back.

    Disappointed

    by ImNorm29 on 7/10/23

This was my 2nd time attending 3ICE at Hershey. The first time felt more "real"and I preferred the previous 6-team format to the new 4-team one. This years show felt "scripted", I actually wondered if the WWE is involved in 3ICE. Not that they can actually script a hockey game easily, but there were times when it definitely felt like players were intentionally "slacking"so that play would naturally shift in favor or the other team. It also seems suspicious to me that a majority of scoring always happens in the 2nd period of every game. I cannot imaging going to see 3ICE again unless they make some drastic changes.

Solid! Would recommend ... but (pt 2)

    by Nate on 7/8/23

I forgot.. the only thing I absolutely would not recommend is that it was a Wednesday night. My group would have brought 8 people instead of 4 if it had been a weekend.

    Solid! Would recommend

    by Nate on 7/8/23

Another solid event in Hershey. They had the music low enough that you could enjoy it but still talk, the refs held play until fans could see the replay, and there was an intermission long enough to get food if you wanted. I would have liked to see the 8 teams, but I understand the change. I was surprised by the very short intermission between the first two games, but 20 minutes and 12 minutes before each of the last two. It's not like we had to wait longer than a regular hockey game, though. This was a solid event that is a great way to be entertained with friends or family.

    Fun time

by bears fan 23 on 7/8/23

Had a great time, glad to only have 4 teams this year. Did not run as late. Still a bit weird to have music going during play

    Great event

    by Shawaii on 7/8/23

I enjoyed the event very much. This is second year I saw 3ICE at Giant Center. I like the constant movement and no stoppage of play. I enjoy the 3 on 3 play. I enjoy hockey in ahl, but this is different and more enjoyable and exciting. Will definitely go again when it returns next year. I wish the play was on normal channels and not paid channels, otherwise I would watch every game on tv.

    Ticketmaster App

    by rickeydcrutcher@bellsouth.net on 8/9/22Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

I almost did not get in because my ticketmaster app would not work. Why do I have so many issues with the ticketmaster app and website. They were generous enough though and gave us other tickets.

great SIX games to watch, the two final teams were electric throughout the tournament. A lot of good goal scorers, puck handlers, and goaltending. Glad i went.

    Fun Experience

by Madeguy 71 on 8/9/22Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

My son and I very much enjoyed the great talent and skill these players had. Always fun watching hockey and probably only opportunity to watch it from glass level! Really wished they had incorporated a meet/greet, or signing event, with all of the hall of famer coaches! Think it would've really increased interest and attendence.

    3ICE - Thrice

by Maple Syrup Madman on 8/9/22Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

It definitely has potential but it will be difficult to build a fan base when the team isn't from a specific town and the players are unknown. I knew all the coaches but I don't go to a hockey game to cheer for the coach. The program needs some recognizable names on the ice.

    Fun Time!

by pappahoppa on 8/9/22Bridgestone Arena - Nashville

Loved that the action was non stop, made it a very fun time to watch! The game was fast and fun, we did not have to sit and wait for something to happen. Liked that went straight to penalty shots with everyone on the ice. Kept the game going at a rapid pace!

    3ICE was a great mid-summer hockey event.

by TimmyG on 7/27/22PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

Everything was geared to family-friendly fun with an emphasis on interacting with the fans. The roving mic interviews and player/coach interviews on the Jumbotron were well done and fun. Definitely interesting to have a hockey event in late July for hockey fans craving good hockey. The league's 3-on-3 format with some twists is awesome! Knowing most of the coaches made rooting for a team a little more engaging. But that's where the problem comes in. It was hard to get too invested in any of the teams because the player recognition was very low, and what was gained if one team or the other won. I found myself trying to generate enthusiasm for a given team because I liked or identified with the coach. I'm not sure how much I would pay for this the next time it was in town. Hopefully there is a way to get more recognizable players so that there is an emotional investment in the outcome. Is it possible to get former NHL stars who are still young enough to compete? Maybe America vs Canada, vs Europe?

We had an absolute blast at 3ICE.

by Jared on 7/27/22PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

My boys and I went with another dad and his 2 boys. They all play hockey themselves and the 3ICE experience was probably the most I have ever seen them enjoy watching any games. The pace was so fast with lots of high danger scoring opportunities. If 3ICE came back to Pittsburgh I would definitely try to go again.

    Fun Time

by Kat V. on 7/27/22PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

3ice was very entertaining and a much cheaper way to enjoy hockey than the NHL. The merchandise was a bit disappointing and expensive for the poor quality, but I think it's a really great way to take a group of kids to see hockey especially. You won't go broke doing it and there's a lot of excitement and action.
