About

With quick-witted dialogue and a playful score, 1776 dramatizes the impassioned debates of Philadelphia's Second Continental Congress. As George Washington sends updates from the military front, patriots John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson attempt to persuade the 13 colonies to separate from British rule. Based on the letters and memoirs of America's founding fathers, this classic, Tony Award-winning musical showcases the principles, pride and determination that influenced the birth of our nation.

    Satisfying

by DC on 2/11/19The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - Northridge

I am an actor. My heart always is with the ensemble and I applaud loudly for all efforts. This was an above average production with solid performances ; some direction was less than crispy and there was some poor microphone amplification, especially with Ben Franklin (we were in Partere section) and it was difficult to hear at times Excellent singing ; audience left their cell phones OFF👍

    History in Song

What a great way to learn about the birth of our nation. This was an outstanding performance. P.S. It helps to watch the movie version before seeing it on stage.

Could not hear the voice over the music

by Gary on 2/11/19The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - Northridge

Unfortunately, the orchestra's sound drowned out the actors singing. Rarely, the sound mixer got it right, but most of the time you could not understand what the actors were saying. Some episodes of feedback occurred when the voices were amplified more, so it seemed to be a problem with the sound system of the hall itself.

1776 took too many liberties with original

by 12345Abcd678 on 10/16/18Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red Bank

i thought it was just the opening scene that the characters would be in modern suits and mrs. adams is in a winter vest? they added songs it was just not at all what i expected or wanted to see. i guess their point was to show then and now but they failed

    Could Be Better

by 12345Abcd678 on 10/16/18Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red Bank

It was ok, I was not very pleased that they were not wearing period costumes, it took away from the play because I thought they were going to eventually change, especially the scenes between John and Abigail Adams, they made her look like a homely farm girl. First time ever I was disappointed with a Count Basie venue.

    EXCELLENT!!!

by HugeCCRFan on 2/20/13O'Reilly Theater - Pittsburgh

1776 is an award winning musical play and this performance was executed superbly. I was spellbound from the beginning to the end by the excellent acting and singing of the 26 members of the cast. The period attire was exceptional. The humor that was interjected into a very serious story was very good and added a huge amount to the enjoyment of the show. This was a well done performance about a subject that many forget about these days, the bravery of those who declared our independence. Excellent! Very highly recommended for all.

Perfect blend of seriousness and amusement. Worth the standing ovation it received. The ENTIRE audience stood up & cheered. It is a long first act so be sure you are on time.

    Absolutely wonderful and professionally presented

by 1776Fan on 10/30/12Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

I have seen two other productions of 1776 and this was by far the best with excellent voices and marvelous acting. Stage presence was wonderful and the actors really played as if they understood their characters. The casting was superb including, in particular, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Richard Henry Lee!!!!! and Edward Rutlidge (whose singing was properly powerful and dramatic). Costuming was very well done. I have the movie DVD and that's my measure, and the live play was its equal. The women's voices were very lovely too, as brief as they were.

    1776 Review

by topdog7 on 10/29/12Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

There were many fine performances that we enjoyed. Normally we would not have cared that the first act was so long, however the front row seats were so horribly uncomfortable it made it crueling.

We thoroughly enjoyed 1776! Great casting, superb voices. Just wish we'd had tickets in a more central location--we were off to the far right. I was amazed at the talent that evening. For an opening night it went flawlessly. Wow.

    Worth the Drive from LA!

by WeHoPatriot on 10/23/12Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

This production had the class and quality of a major touring production. All the actors were great, vivid personalities (Robert Glen Decker as Wilson was hysterical!). The score was lively. Most of all, the direction was fantastic -- very touching and moving as it humanized the birth of our nation. Worth the drive out the 101 from LA to this new-looking and comfortable theatre.

    1776

by Anonymous on 2/20/12Landers Center (formerly DeSoto Civic Center) - Southaven

The show 1776 was wonderful. My 70 yr old parents, husband and 10 year old daughter went to the 02/18/2012 show. A very funny musical. Of course, I can be prejudice. My children's teacher Bill Earnheart plays Ben Franklin. The men playing John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin are excellant leads in the play. We would all go again if given the chance.
