About

With quick-witted dialogue and a playful score, 1776 dramatizes the impassioned debates of Philadelphia's Second Continental Congress. As George Washington sends updates from the military front, patriots John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson attempt to persuade the 13 colonies to separate from British rule. Based on the letters and memoirs of America's founding fathers, this classic, Tony Award-winning musical showcases the principles, pride and determination that influenced the birth of our nation.

    "1776" was fantastic

by Delsa on 3/19/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Even though I had seen the play "1776" before, I still enjoyed it immensely. The acting was great and the costumes were spot on. It's just a beautiful way to learn about a crucial time in our history.

Outstanding Play in a Remarkable Theatre

by VirginiaPatriot on 3/19/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

The acting, performances and singing were excellent! What an incredible and entertaining lesson regarding one of the most critical times in our nation's history. There was a little crude humor and innuendo, so accordingly I wouldn't recommend the play for children even though it is a great lesson for all ages. I was with a group of 17 year old girls so naturally their favorite part was the South Carolina delegate's solo (and for that matter any other scene that he was in). We attended the matinee showing, and were very disappointed to find out that apparently matinee performance attendees are not granted access to the museum. This was unfortunate because the museum was one of the main reasons that we attended.

    Fantastic production of 1776!

by Bobbiebabi on 3/19/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

My friend and I absolutely loved your production of 1776! I have seen it many times, even its first appearance on Broadway, and including the last Ford Theatre presentation in 2003. This was terrific! My friend had never seen it, and she was blown away, said she didn't know why she had never seen it, but she is recommending to all her friends that they come to see it here before it goes away. The acting and singing were both wonderful.

    1776 was excellent !!

    by Trident2012 on 3/19/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

From start to finish, the music and dialogue was enlivening, entertaining and informative. Most interesting to me was how the abolition of slavery was part of the original draft of the Declaration of independence. How different things may have been if it had been allowed to stay as part of the original. Well done overall!

    1776 Was great

    by Crowd1 on 3/19/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

We went on a Thursday night to this musical and loved it. We laughed at the witty comments and satirical songs and was glad to see that they stuck to historical (or should I say hysterical) correctness as they worked through their play. It was obviously updated with "political correctness" with the language and the costumes were great. I would highly recommend this to all of the family. In addition, the theater's updated seats made for a wonderful seating arrangement with excellent views for all. This is definitely a great play to see.

    Awesome History

by Anonymous on 3/18/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Great performance. I thought I knew all the behind the scenes to the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration. I left with some insider knowledge of these historic days in Philadelphia. Also, great location in The Ford's Theatre no need to say more such a historic place.

    Not to be missed

by ChrisKSC on 3/17/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

I saw the original broadway production in the early 1970s. This cast did not fail to live up to and exceed (John Adams) their performances with one exception (Benjamin Franklin). If you can survive comparison to an original cast, that says a lot.

    Entertaining AND Educational

by Anonymous on 3/16/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

We thoroughly enjoyed the acting and the music. We also learned things we didn't know about our Founding Fathers and the Continental Congress we had not known.

    1776 is lots of fun

by Anonymous on 3/15/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

This version of 1776 is true to the original and this production fits in this theater. Is it the most powerful theater experience I've ever had? No. But it is a fun, witty, entertaining, and humorous retelling of this piece of American history. Plus, your in Ford's Theater. Outside of seeing this in Philadelphia, what could be better? We had a great time.

1776 at Ford's Theatre: Perfect Show & Venue!

by AnneinTX on 3/15/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

1776 was an amazing show. I felt I got a history lesson, a look into colonial America, and an excellent Broadway-quality play all in one event! I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the show, and can honestly say it was the highlight of my 3-day trip to Washington, D.C. I highly recommend this play. Seeing it at Ford's Theatre made it doubly good!

    I loved 1776!

by Anonymous on 3/15/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

It was a really well done musical, and the theater was beautiful! The subject of the musical really added to the historical significance of the theater. The only complaint I have is that the play drags a little since most of the action is during the Second Continental Congress, and so I would not recommend it for families with young children. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it!

    Overloaded on American History Amazingness

by AbbyK on 3/15/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

My family basically raised me with the 1776 movie. I know almost every word to every song and have very strong feelings regarding some of the characters (Livingston! Hiss). But even with my fandom I still LOVED this production. John Adams was kind of sassy which i liked and the commentary they were able to create on congress these days made almost everyone fall out of their seats. Only critique - mics were kinda bad... they would cut in and out which made hearing hard for even me.

    1776 was wonderful!!!

by RLWELCH on 3/11/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

All the actors were professionals, many from Broadway, and it shows. The singing was great, the songs were memorable, and this was my 3rd time to see it. The sound system was excellent. I sat in the balcony and still heard every word.

    WOnderful show

by Petelx on 3/11/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Ford Theter production of the musical 1776 exceeds expectations. This old musical that was made into a film defies credulity. Imagine: the birth of the United States in song! In fact, by most musical standards, there are not a lot of songs, but they work very well. The excellence of the entire cast advances the theory that there is so much talent in Washington and surroundings that it is getting harder and harder to differentiate the talent standards of Broadway casts and those you find in theaters around here. Take the kids (or rather adolescents) to see this one.

"1776" A Great Play to See in DC

    1776 is a MUST SEE!

by ArtBushkin on 3/11/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

One of the most inspiring, thoughtful plays I have ever seen. Well-acted, well-staged, and well-done, it shows the impact of a courageous, committed leader in the birth of our nation. You'll laugh; you'll gasp; and you'll recognize the behavior of today's Congress in our first Congress.
