About

Steve Martin & Martin Short on Tour

As two titans of comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short have conquered film, television, and the stage in the course of their long, dazzling careers. But the live shows that grew out of both their friendship and their undeniable comedic chemistry create something special enough to stand out even among the many achievements of these two show-biz veterans.

In 2015, they worked up a show that combined both of their quirky gifts and started taking it around the country. Even more people got a share of the laughs when one show was filmed for the 2018 Netflix special An Evening You'll Forget for the Rest of Your Life, where Short and Martin joke, jab, and jibe with each other and inject a little music into the mix as well. Martin showed off his Grammy-winning banjo prowess and Short displayed his Tony-winning vocal chops.

Later that year, the pair announced a new tour: Now You See Them, Soon You Won't. It presented an evening of all-new material and reunited them with Steve's Grammy-winning bluegrass compatriots — the Steep Canyon Rangers — for a couple of hot-picking musical moments in the bargain.

Steve Martin & Martin Short Background

Steve Martin debuted his offbeat brand of stand-up comedy in the 1960s, when he first reached a wide audience via the TV shows of the Smothers Brothers and Sonny & Cher. His appearances on Saturday Night Live in the mid '70s helped him become one of the most successful stand-up comedians on the planet. His idiosyncratic, often absurdist style translated to sold-out arena shows and platinum albums.

In short order he became a film star, with movies like The Jerk and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It was on the 1986 film Three Amigos that he first worked with Martin Short, who had become famous for his outrageous characters and sketch comedy mastery on SCTV and SNL earlier in the '80s.

Short went on to plenty of big films himself, and the two teamed up again in 1991's Father of the Bride as well as its 1995 sequel. Short became a Broadway star in the '90s with shows like The Goodbye Girl and Little Me, and he inhabited the classic character Jiminy Glick in the '00s for his Comedy Central series Primetime Glick. But for all the many accomplishments lining both their legacies, when Martin and Short come together for their live performances, they create an utterly unique comedic force.

by Lono on 10/29/23Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

Seats were terrible. The show was good, but needs an intermission. Could do with out beginning movie clips. Both men definitely know how to keep the show lively

    Legends of Comedy

by RV on 10/29/23Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

They were the best! I only wish they had allowed for an opportunity to take photos of them on the stage. The show did not allow phones which I can understand for the comedy routine but too bad no photo opp available of these legendary stars even at the end of the show. Also, the show featured an excellent band, Steep Canyon Rangers, and not allowing filming even of their performance is such a lost opportunity for marketing/sharing on social media so more people can know of their awesome talent. It was an incredible show.

An awesome evening of comedy and music

by Bib on 10/20/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

The show was great from start to finish. The banter between Steve and Martin was pretty immature and slightly vulgar(right up my alley). And the bluegrass group that played a couple tunes with Steve and a couple on their own was unbelievable

by MsC on 10/19/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

Steve Martin and Martin Short are as good as it gets. So much fun. I especially loved the banjo playing and Steep Canyon rangers...that was the cream and cherry on the top.

These guys were freaking hilarious. The whole show is a constant laugh riot. They are seriously joking when they say that there will be a lull in the middle. Also, the Steep Canyon Rangers were so amazing, I went and bought one of their cds!

    very cute show

by back row joe on 10/19/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

It was haha chuckle funny but not pee your pants hysterical. I sat in the back and couldn't really see the video screen. would have been nicer if that screen was bigger. they did incorporate the video board a lot so would have been nice to know beforehand. thought steep canyon rangers were very good and will maybe listen to them again, but i came to see comedy not a musical performance. we had a good time but i wouldn't go again. tickets were pretty pricey even for the back.

They are still wild and crazy guys

by Jay on 10/19/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

Loved it. It was like going back to my teenage years…in a good way. They might actually be better now than they were then. They have mastered their craft of humor and showmanship. And they are an inspiration to all of us who think our best days may be behind us. Well done to the entire cast and band members!

    Best show at PAC

by Chuck Z on 10/19/23North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

My wife and I are season ticket holders at the PAC for the Best of Broadway and have for over 15 years and love the musicals that come to town. Steve and Martin kept us in stitches the whole two hours and it seemed less. They held our complete attention. They were on point and hilarious. We laughed and laughed and laughed the whole evening. They brought back some wonderful funny moments in their careers and that was a nice touch. The Steep Canyon Rangers were fabulous. Have been listening to them since the event. A well packaged tour and the execution was over the top. Any evening to remember. Priceless.
