    Sunset Blvd was fabulous

by Henreitta on 1/26/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

The main characters were awesome. Flo played Norma so well. My seats were next to the staircase and she stayed in character until you could no longer see her on the stairs. And her voice---WOW! It was amazing from the start and stayed that way all the way through. Everyone in the cast was truly exceptional. GREAT JOB by all.

    Don't Miss Sunset Blvd!

    by 1musicalboi on 1/26/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

Sunset Blvd. at Signature is an amazing and unforgettable show. The cast is first rate, the sets are imaginative, and the production breathes new life into this Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Signature creatively uses the space available in the theater to make the production active and intimate, but without losing the "big show" character of this musical. You forget you are in a small theater in terms of the experience, yet you feel as close as you want to the performers. They use every imaginable piece of "theater magic" to make the show memorable and enjoyable. It is stunning to realize that a musical of this caliber is running in Shirlngton, Virginia. Make an effort to see it before it leaves! Chess and then Sunset Blvd. in one season! What's next on the musical front at Signature??

    Ready for My Closeup Norma

by CactusSky on 1/25/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

Sunset Boulevard was much anticipated and I was not at all disappointed. I had seen the show in NY and London and this production of Sunset Boulevard was well staged, with excellent casting. The theatrical staging was intimate and unique for the wonderful Signature Theatre, my first time at this venue. The Orchestra and sets were perfect. Bravo to the cast and crew on a job well done.

    Well done with reservations!

by Lyricospinto on 1/25/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

The cast did a really fine job. The orchestra was trully amazing. There were two problems that can't be avoided. First, The show itself is really weak and not the best, by far, that Andrew Lloyd Weber has given us. Second, the look, face and body of Norma Desmond will forever be tied to Gloria Swanson and the movie that this show was based on. So! It will always be a problem if the actress, who in this case did a wondeful job, is not the same "look" or body type! All this aside, once you get use to being 4 feet from singers that you can't hear except through the sound system - this was a interesting production and well worth the time! We will attend more at Signature!

An Ok production of a not very good musical.

by Anonymous on 1/24/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

It is clear from the start why this musical was not a big hit. So-so music with forced forgetable lyrics. Save yourself a bundle and watch the wonderful movie version instead. We were very disappointed, especially after all the hype.

    With One (my fourth) Look!

by GTJH on 1/24/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

I am a huge fan of the classic film. I saw Betty Buckley, Karen Mason, and finally Elaine Paige play Norma on Broadway. Don't worry Florence...you are the greatest star of all! I've been a fan since I first saw you in Hello Dolly. Your clean, pure tones could cut through steel and your performance was spot on! I did wonder how Signature could/would pull off the staging sans the "flying house"...but was not disappointed. I believe the intimacy of the space combined with superb staging served the piece beautifully. I loved every minute of it (weeped throughout) and found myself, once again, enveloped in the story and the lives of the characters. The performances were all strong and consistent. Ed Dixon practically made the walls shake with his powerful voice. Lastly, enough cannot be said about the quality of the orchestra...phenomenal! Thank you for a wonderful evening in the theatre.

Signature delivers a crisp engaging production!

    by NickSing81 on 1/23/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

Signature Theatre has successfully taken a huge musical and placed it in an intimate space all the while not losing any production elements. The sets and lighting along with a stellar performance by the actor playing "Max" made the show! Unfortunitly, I felt a lot of the cast was anticipating each other and thus lost a more authentic feeling which was all the more present amidst such an authentic production design. Florence Lacey gave a very good performance but not an excellent one. I felt her vocals were a bit thin especially at the top of the show. I was hoping she would have had a more guarded energy at first instead of a more conversational tone. This would have created a more drastic shift upon seeing her guarded walls for what they are, a completely vulnerable woman who can't let go of her Ego. The guy playing Joe was good but he seemed a bit over the production to be honest. I felt little chemistry between him and his two leading ladies. Overall, the production design was stellar along with the lush clean and together orchestra. It was a great night of quality theatre!

A Big Show in Small Room

by krouse on 1/18/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

If you want to see a big Broadway production in an intimate room where few audience members are more than five rows away from the stage, then this is the event for you. There is a full orchestra; a cast of nearly 20, elaborate costumes, professional sets (the antique Duesenberg gets its own applause), and a cast worthy of of any Bway show that costs more than double the price of admission at the Signature. If Sunset Blvd was in the National Thater or the KenCen, I would be saying 'eh". However, at the Signature, teh show becomes a "wow". go see it.

This show was fantastic. We are so lucky to have such great talent here in VA, and the Signature theater is the perfect place to showcase it - not a bad seat in the house!

    Sunset Boulevard

The play was good -- the actors were good and theatre venue was small. I like Signature Theatre very much.

    Very Entertaining

    by petez165 on 1/11/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

I'm not huge into theater but I took my girlfriend (who is also not huge into theater) and we really enjoyed it. It kept my interest and the time went by quickly. The 20 piece orchestra was pretty bad ass. We also went on the stage tour prior to the show which was interesting. Hanging out in the lobby area for some drinks and snacks was also pretty relaxing. The only annoying part of the experience was the gay guy that felt the need to giggle incessantly but with the music I was able to tune him out pretty quickly.

Always inventive Signature delivers Sunset Blvd.

by ArlingtonGuy on 1/9/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

This production overall is very good. Inventive placement of the orchestra and they sounded great. The staging was excellent. The support cast was excellent. The actress playing Norma Desmond was good, not great - but I enjoyed her interpretation of the songs, which was different from Betty Buckley or Glenn Close. Male lead was average. Actor playing Max was the star. Pride evening is always fun.

    Sunset Boulevard was a drag.

Very disappointing performance. The material is dated and the performers never were able to bring it to life.

Sunset Blvd at Signature Theatre was amazing

by shiringtonfan on 1/4/11Signature Theatre - Arlington

We signed up for the back lot tour and for the performance. The back lot tour was really interesting, we got to walk all around the backstage. We watched a video of interviews from the crew discussing all the behind the scenes work that took place to make Sunset Blvd happen. We enjoyed the performance, the actors were terrific. We especially loved Max! The theatre itself is conveniently located at Shirlington Village and was very modern and there didnt seem to be 1 bad seat in the theatre the way it was set up. i would recommend this to my friends.

Signature's production of Sunset Boulevard was excellent. Having a 20 piece orchestra was just part of a great musical theatre experience. The production was as good as anything I see at the Kennedy Center. Unfortunately, this is probably Andrew Lloyd Webber's least appealing musical. Aside from a few number's it's a very forgettable score, but, the production is so good, I would recommend this show at Signature to anyone. To be this up close and personal in this intimate theatre is quite an evening. Don't miss it.
