About

Les Misérables on Tour

Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.

Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.

About Les Misérables

The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.

Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."

    Les Miserables

by LesMiserablesFanForever on 10/22/18North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

Excellent show. Voices throughout the performance were absolutely wonderful. The stage presentation was great and the orchestra was amazing. Overall the performance was impressive. The main drawback of the performance was lighting. The stage was simply kept too dark so much so you often could not see the faces of the actors. I understand the intent but it needs to lighten up. Thank you for a great show

by GracysMom on 10/22/18North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

This production was amazing. The talent was top notch. The sets and staging perfect and transitioned seamlessly. The sound was well produced. Neither too soft or too loud. One of the better productions I have seen and I highly recommend it.

    Amazing voices

by KVAREPORTING on 10/21/18North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North Charleston

If you know the story, you'll love the play. Otherwise, it might be hard to follow. These singers hit every high note beautifully. Our only criticism would be the stage was so dark it was often hard to tell who was on stage.

    Les Mis at last!!

by ArisB on 6/10/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

After unsuccessfully chasing this musical all over the world, I finally got to see it and it was an excellent show. The singing was great and one of my favorites was "take him home"...it was phenomenal.

    Awesome experience

by theaterjunkie2015 on 6/9/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

My husband and I had 2nd row seats and we were just amazed. The acting was incredibly well done, the storylines were believable, and the music was fabulous. Les Mis is packed with info and feeling and sometimes that makes it a little difficult to keep up but since we already knew the story line, we didn't have any trouble. Awesome experience - one I would definitely recommend.

    Hard to Hear

by LesMiserables23 on 6/9/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

This is my wife's favorite show and I've never seen it until now. We sat on the side about 10 rows back from the front. They were great seats, so I thought. First, I would say that the show started way too late (8pm) for a 3 hour show. Second, it was really hard to hear from my angle. I was able to listen hard and understand what they were singing, but after 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours....I got tired of concentrating because it was getting much later in the evening. A couple of recommendations for everyone: 1. Read the story of the play in the program they give you before you see the show. It helped me to follow what was going on without understanding what they were singing. (Yes, it's all singing...be ready for that) 2. Get seats in the middle of this venue.

    Terrific performance in convenient location!

by RCJR22 on 6/9/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

Took my mom to see Les Miserables at the nearby Riverside theatre and sincerely enjoyed it. The intimate setting was a breath of fresh air and truly allowed every seat to be spectacular. After seeing multiple productions at the Pantages in Los Angeles, I was slightly skeptical of the quality of experience we would have, but I was pleasantly surprised! Our positive outing certainly motivates me to tune into other opportunities at this theatre. My only complaint: they ran out of playbills by 7:45 p.m. when the theatre was less than half full!

    Les miserables was amazing

by Anonymous on 6/9/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

My wife is a big fan of les mis so i bought her tickets for her birthday as a surprise. I was never into plays or musicals of kind but this was amazing!!!! I bought them for her but enjoyed it just as much as she did. We sat in the front row so we saw everything perfextly. I would go to this 10 more times if they we're in my area.

    Les Mis did exactly that

by danzluvr on 6/9/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

A high school quality production with little chemistry in the cast, lighting that hid faces, uneven female chorus and stage direction that confused with busy blocking. An annoying device of having the line character either center stage, or the chorus was busy tossing the flag to the one with the next line. Rich Schaffner as the Bishop characterized the gravitas of the musical with his physical bearing, strong voice and well-timed movements.Paul Kehler did a fine job of creating of the complexity and narrow chink in the armor that allowed our audience sympathy to enter. The tempi went too brightly to allow words to be understood by the chorus. I have seen this production several times and hope that first time viewers have the same opportunity.

    Mediocre Lead

by Mmac91 on 6/8/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

The Fox Performing Arts Theatre is a beautiful venue but the performance of Les Miserables was less so. The actor playing Jean Valjean was not a good enough singer to play this part. His terrible performance was a distraction at best. The actors portraying Javert, Fantine, and Enjolas, however, were outstanding and deserve their own encore. The sets looked like high school theatre sets and were unimpressive. Overall, the experience was not worth the cost.

    It was okay

by TheaterGoerFromSimi on 6/8/15Fox Performing Arts Center - Riverside

A+ to the orchestra, many of the vocals (top were The Bishop, Javert and Enjorles), barricade set and death scene at the barricade. B- to the sewer scene C- to the most of the set, the technical sound (microphones either too much treble to understand the words (I understood about 1/3 of the inn keepers wife), overall staging lacked character. D- to the casts connection to each other. At no time was I moved to emotion. They did not, for me, create he depth of character necessary for Les miserable. They didn't seem to be a part of the same musical. Just separate characters on a stage. This is not to say every moment but overall. I will always give credit to those that get on stage and perform. I applaud you for that!

    Great Performance!!

    by Krista24601 on 4/22/15Fisher Theater - Ames

Our family loved this performance of Les Miserables. Our seats were in the front row, which offers a very different view of the show, and for this show we really enjoyed being so close. The leads had strong voices, and the ensemble rounded everything out. We also liked young Cossette, young Eponine, and the very cute Gavroche. We also thought the set was very interesting! It was a very fun show, and a great afternoon!
