CULTURE CLUB IN CONCERT:

Calling all karma chameleons: Culture Club is back on the road to promote their latest album Tribes, and fans across North America can relive the ‘80s as Boy George and company perform their classic new wave hits on tour. In concert Boy George remains as fierce a showman as ever, taking the stage with the same gender-bending makeup and outré fashion that made him a global ‘80s icon. Whether he’s bringing the drama on upbeat favorites like “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” or melting hearts with his coy croon on “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”, George always charms audiences with his soulful delivery, infectious dancing, and candid asides between songs. The band keeps pace beautifully, cranking out their signature brand of reggae-influenced new wave with an ease and funkiness that is sure to get fans grooving. Whether they’re performing solo or sharing the bill with fellow new wave icon Howard Jones, Culture Club always treat fans to a nostalgic and dance-worthy journey through some of the best sounds of the ‘80s.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Culture Club was formed in London in the early ‘80s by Boy George, an androgynous club kid who had previously sang with legendary new wave outfit Bow Wow Wow. Calling themselves Culture Club as a nod to their diverse cultural backgrounds, the band made their debut in 1982 with the album Kissing to be Clever. Though the album’s first two singles failed to make much of a mark, third single “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” topped charts around the world, catapulting the band to international superstardom virtually overnight. Their 1983 sophomore album Colour by Numbers was an even bigger smash, blowing up charts around the globe with catchy hits like “Karma Chameleon” and earning the band a Grammy in 1984 for Best New Artist. Culture Club released two more albums in the mid-’80s to moderate success, but by 1986 Boy George’s struggles with addiction had pushed the band apart. They reunited in the late ‘90s and released the 1999 album Don’t Mind If I Do and toured for a stint, but George’s successful career as a DJ soon led to another hiatus. Following a few one-off shows in 2011, the band reunited in 2014 to record their sixth album Tribes -- a highly anticipated return that has fans dying to catch them on tour in support of the release.

    Berlin/Howard Jones/Culture Club

    by Leo on 8/22/23

The bands themselves were amazing, all put on a great show. The venue could use some help, especially for ADA. Options when purchasing tickets are non existent, calling venue or AXS online gets a message to check at venue after arrival. Consideration for those with mobility issues is forgotten, ramps were often blocked by gates with staff unaware of how to handle directing ADA. Only way to get ADA situated is waiting through the mad rush at entrance to get to guest services, which helps, doesn't always consider the mobility of those they are helping, and again, staff redirecting because of the seats that disregard mobility issues(like other venues, staff often send you to the farthest section for seating, which is also not the best for stage or screen view.) Leaving ADA as an afterthought for attending events is getting worse and worse, with little real improvement as ticketmaster and axs insulate themselves more and more from direct customer contact.

    Awesome event upgraded

    by dgolv72 on 8/22/23

had grass seats with a lawn chair rental, get to the venue, grass is closed off. told we were being upgraded. Our seats were 7th row off the to right of the stage. It was a great upgrade and nice to be near the front. Howard Jones put on a great show. Berlin (Terri Nunn) always is awesome and I did see Culture Club with Berlin last year up in the OC and this event was so much better. I think they took more time to plan this tour than last years. If you can see them before the tour is over, go.

    We are 80s Fans

by San Diego Fun on 8/22/23

What a show! Howard Jones was really good, Berlin was superb as usual, and again Terri went through the crowd, she's so cute! And whenever she's in San Diego, she always gives a shout-out to 91X! Culture Club was very entertaining, so fun! After reading the reviews from Texas, I was worried, but they were wrong! A most excellent show!

    Such a fun night!

    by Tricia on 8/22/23

An incredible 80s lineup! All three artists brought their a-game. Stage transitions went smoothly. No technical issues. A fabulous evening! And we lucked out as the storm waited until we started walking out to sprinkle! Next up, Duran Duran!

    Just ok

    by Rachael on 8/22/23

Boy George slowed his songs down way too much. He still has a nice voice and stage presence. Is back up singers were amazing speed the songs back up to the way they used to be, and they will be more enjoyable to listen to.

    Awesome show

    by Audi on 8/22/23

Had a great time. I don't know if people failed to attend due to the weather, but it was the best experience by far at the venue. No traffic trying to get parking at the venue. Was upgraded to assigned seats from lawn and the sound system was excellent. Loved all three acts, especially the one and only Boy George (he sounds the same).

    Really lik d the venue!!

    by TYM on 8/22/23

Even with the tropical storm coming, very nice venue. Not too bad of a drive coming from the Inland Empire. Very good seating, doesn’t look like there was a bad seat in the house. Very well designed! Lots of places to get drinks, snacks etc. Thank you TYM

    Culture Club

    by DDluv on 8/22/23

The seats were great. Section 103 row B. Howard Jones and his ba d were PHENOMENAL. Berlin was good. I've seen them many years ago growing up in NY. Culture Club was good. I've never had the chance to see them being one of my favorites. I felt like Boy George wasn't into it as much as he should have been. It was more of a variety show than his original band. The singers were awesome. I liked his reggae touch too because I like reggae. I felt like he wasn't happy that the band was extremely late and just went through the motions not giving all his greatness. Maybe stardom got to his head. His show lasted only one hour compared to Jones. Would I see him again, of course.

    Fun Night

    by Nonna L on 8/22/23

Man, Howard Jones kicked of the night and he was amazing! Brought me back to my high school years. Berlin, just wow!! Terri walking in the isle was fantastic and having her old videos playing and great. Now onto the main event. At the point we were having a blast dancing and singing out loud then Culture Club showed up LATE! At least some of the band members were. Then the energy just got sucked out of the night. While the songs sounded okay just no energy there were no special effects. Just blah. We pretty much knew the set list so we left during Miss Me Blind.

    Very much love the venue

    by MWHMAN619 on 8/22/23

I'm hoping that this will apply to Culture Club and not the venue. BG seemed off key. He changed up hit songs in a way that was disappointing. POURED on the reggae for a couple songs and slowed down others to the point of them being a let down. The crowd would be standing in anticipation of a song and 30 seconds in sat down. That said it all. I really wanted to be excited for every song but was disappointed for most. He's visually distracting. I don't mean to be mean but he was. If he would have played his hits the same or better than the recordings it would have made up for his diminished persona. Elton John is an example. He's put on quite a few lbs but he was spot on. I'm sure BG will never read this and rightfully couldn't care less about my assessment. I look quite different than I did in the 80s, age sucks. That's my take on Culture Club 2023. The 2 previous Howard Jones and Berlin were great! They exceeded my expectations...

    Boy oh boy

    by Marsi Doodlebug on 8/22/23

Culture club were great! George is so personable and funny and he made it feel like an intimate setting. He really engages with the audience and had a few surprise songs along the way. Highly recommend seeing his band. The two other singers who help on some songs were also amazing.

    Bland...short

    by BC on 8/22/23

Who headlined? Really, with 3 short sets, we couldnt tell. Probably the last time we'll go to a compilation show. BG was flat and mainly shuffled around the stage. Good backup singers. Not sure we liked the genre bending selections and covers. Would have enjoyed all originals instead.
