The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert
Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.
For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.
In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.
In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."
Singer was perfect performer for Prince's Purple Rain!!! Loved it!!!
The show was off the chart. Sound was great and the musician's rocked it. We never stopped dancing!
Great show, performers and great seats. The singer that performed Purple Rain was awesome. He was a great performer. Would see it agian.
This was my 4th BJS and the best so far. The band is always fantastic, but that lead singer was over the top fabulous! Great energy and a wonderful showman. Everything exceeded expectations...and we knew the BJS was doing to put on a great show based on previous tributes.
I bought last minute tickets and am so thankful I did. The show was amazing. The hourish long replay of Purple Rain was spot on. The energy from the lead singer and band was infectious. The follow-on play list hit all the charted songs and some that didn’t that all were fantastic. I’ve been trying to see Black Jacket Symphony for years and this show worked for my schedule. I’ll try harder to see them going forward and already have tickets for their Elton show. Don’t miss this show.
The entire show was full of action, the lead singer embodied Prince's character, style and stage performances!
This was my first time experiencing the Black Jacket Symphony. It will definitely not be the last time! They are amazing! There was no lull in the show at all. Non-stop entertainment! If you haven’t seen them you are missing out!!!!
This show did not disappoint!!!! I really didn't know what to expect.....let me just say that it was way more than I expected!!! The young man portraying "PRINCE"was "REMARKABLE"!!!! I am a MAJOR PRINCE FAN and he got my respect and love!!! Thank you for delivering such a GREAT SHOW!!!!!!
I wasn’t sure what to expect because Prince is so unique, but Black Jacket Symphony did it again! The show was entertaining and the music was exceptional!!! Great evening!
After listening to the Abbey Road album the day before attending the BJS concert in Birmingham, I was impressed with the quality of the performance because of the degree of difficulty (horns, strings, etc.) the re-creation of one of the greatest albums of all time presented. Pulled it off nicely. Also enjoyed the Beatles greatest hits after the intermission. Great concert!
