About
MICHAEL FLATLEY’S LORD OF THE DANCE is described by the New York Post as "fascinating, rewarding and above all, entertaining," and by the Los Angeles Times as "a showpiece extravaganza," Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance. The story is based upon mythical Irish folklore as Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal lord of light, the Lord of the Dance. Battle lines are drawn, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm. The action is played out over 21 scenes on a grand scale of precision dancing, dramatic music, colorful costumes and stage-of-the-art staging and lighting.

by Maryjo60 on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamIt was wonderfully well presented. Such energy & precision! I wish there had been some sort of program that identified the dancers.

by YK123 on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamDancing was great but repetitive. All other elements were very average at best. I was disappointed and so was my friend.
Rating: 3 out of 5 Too much
by Anonymous on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamAwesome dance lost in the craziness. Women in underwear completely unnecessary. Backdrop distracting.

Rating: 2 out of 5 Lord of the Dance - vanity project
by Roomforaview on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamLord of the Dance is Michael Flatley's vanity project, created after he became a sensation in Riverdance. Nothing can cut the excitement and wonder of Irish stepdancing, which is the highlight of the show. But there was so much not quite right about the production I saw at DPAC. The projected images on the back screens had nothing to do with the story and were very distracting. The female dancers were "C" and "D" list at best - especially the lead female, who was out of shape and out of energy. Couldn't tell you who she was, because the only program available cost $11. I know this is picky, but she had knobby knees. Why is this a problem? Dancing is about line - and her legs never once formed a straight one. The male lead was capable and interesting, but saddled with a story that is all about Michael Flatley's narcissism and, therefore, seems tongue and cheek when danced by an unknown. Also, though I have no problem with nudity or sex in theatre, there is a moment when the female dancers strip down to what amounts to a bra and panties for NO APPARENT REASON, and then continue to dance. It was laughable. This show was not up-to-par for DPAC.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Good Show, but ...
by Juju111 on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamI went to see Irish dancing, and this show did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed when the whole group was dancing in unison. At times, though, I felt like Lord of the Dance was trying to be too many things. At one point the female dancers ripped off their dresses and danced in what appeared to be sports bras and underwear. I thought it was totally unnecessary. Also, no plot is necessary in a show like this. I wish they would just stick to what everyone wants to see -- Irish dancing!
Rating: 5 out of 5 Lord of the Dance
by eve9979 on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamThe show was almost identical to the one we saw 2 years ago at the movie theater in 3-D. The only difference was a woman singer and Michael Flatley was not in attendance. We enjoyed the show immensely and were very happy that the Program Booklets were not set at an outrageous price. $10 was well worth the colorful, glossy Program. Michael Flatley has trained them well and although was missed, they did him proud!!!!!!
Rating: 2 out of 5 Overall Disappointing although some good moments
by UnhappyUnhappy on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamI had very high hopes for the show. There were some great moments, especially around some of the men's tap portions, but we found the women's dances somewhat repetitive and not that great. A singer came out multiple times, and she was not good at all to us. Overall I would rate the show as OK -- some great moments, but the downs were greater than the ups.
Rating: 1 out of 5 Not at all what I expected
by Sheepmom on 3/12/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamI so looked forward to seeing this show. My husband and I saw Riverdance in Las Vegas a number of years ago and loved it! I thought this would be similar - boy was I wrong. Yes, the dancing was Irish and there were a couple of good numbers in the show. But I came to realize that Lord of the Dance was a story told in dance and the story was really lame. I think the show had everything the lowest common denominator would love: sex, violence, and Power Rangers. Well - they were not actually Power Rangers, but they sure looked like them - or maybe Nazi stormtroopers - either way they were in black and violent. I would definitely not take children to see this show. Most of the numbers were cheezy - girls flitting around in fairy outfits - and the main female dancer moved her arms more than her legs. The audience seemed to really enjoy the show however - gave them a standing ovation! For what? It just goes to show you that if you charge enough for tickets, no matter how bad the show - the audience will learn to love it.
