About

What would you do for fame? If you're Roxy Hart, you'd lie, cheat...even kill. "Chicago" is the critically acclaimed musical written by Tony Award winners Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse with an amazing score by John Kander that tells the story of a not-so-ordinary housewife obsessed with the spotlight and the lengths that she'll go to keep it. One of the most compelling musicals to hit the stage, "Chicago" is a theatrical experience not to be missed.

Chicago the Musical was exceptional, had a great time

by Sandh on 11/29/22The National Theatre - Washington

The musical was wonderful, the chairs are tight. Good thing the section next to us was empty. My husband has a knee problem and he was able to go sit on an end seat so he could stretch his leg. Just to be honest my daughter was supposed to go with my group but could not make it, so my husband took her place.

    Not worth $$

by LL on 11/29/22The National Theatre - Washington

As a former professional dancer and Broadway performer, I have a huge respect for the arts. While this can make me a harsh critic in some aspects, it does not mean anything less than spectacular is not up to par for me. This version of Chicago is advertised as the Broadway rendition, of which it was far from it. Fosse choreography is very very difficult to perform, however 3 cast members at most, could actually dance at all. And the original choreography was hinted at while most of the numbers were dumbed down and limited to a small stage area while the onstage band took up the entire stage. The voices were also cringe worthy, making this overall production look as amateur as a high school performance than a touring company. My husband and I, as well as several other audience members, left st intermission and did not return. To pay over $300 for mezzanine seats, this was beyond disappointing and way over priced for this rendition of this show.

    Isn’t it Swell?

by DC Denizen on 11/29/22The National Theatre - Washington

The cast is mad fit and the background dancers serve a lot of face. That said I felt some of the characters were stronger than others of the main cast. Still and enjoyable evening and a fun show.

    Chicago in DC was fantastic!

by Debs on 11/28/22The National Theatre - Washington

This cast, and the production, was fantastic! We are so glad we decided to go - we were humming the songs all week long. The theater was charming, seats amazing, and the performance blew us away. We couldn't believe how fast the time went - we were completely entertained. 10/10 recommend!

Great performances in a beautiful theater.

by Andrea on 11/28/22The National Theatre - Washington

One of my favorite musicals. Roxy and Velma are great. They decided to dress all the men except Amos like Chippendale dancers instead of in period suits which was a weird and distracting choice.

    Very entertaining!

by Kmac on 11/28/22The National Theatre - Washington

We had 6th row orchestra seats; awesome add to the experience factor. Story is clever, funny, and the acting and dancing were spot on and inspiring - tell me you didn’t walk out with some “dance” in your step.😀 The venue is on the smaller side; a general plus in my opinion, however being an older theatre the seats are small and tight. With no coat check you are pretty much stuck in one position if someone is sitting next you. It’s nice they let you bring your drinks & snacks into the theatre.

    Aggravating

by CJ on 11/23/22The National Theatre - Washington

I loved the show.. Unfortunately i thought i was paying for good seats for me and my grandson.. Unfortunately there was a very tall person in front of me and i had to lean on people next to me to see.. so frustrating.. I was just surprised that that happened.. So disappointed..

Great show; Bad Annoying Disruptive Attendees

by Thanh on 11/23/22The National Theatre - Washington

Chicago was a great and enjoyable show. The performers were phenomenal and couldn’t be more perfect. Our only complaint was toward the National Theater for allowing attendees to be disrespectful and disruptive throughout the show. People sitting in the Mezzanine sections were talking, getting up and out of their seats, making noises from candy wrappers and chewing on ice. At intermission I complained to one of the theater employees and he said that there was nothing he could do. I’m very disappointed in the National Theater and probably won’t return there. It’s unfortunate as the show was fantastic and I wished we could have enjoyed it more.

    Slow, drawn out

by John McA on 11/23/22The National Theatre - Washington

Though many people in the audience seemed to be excited to see it again, I, seeing it for the first time, was eager for it to end. It could have been finished by intermission and covered it all very well, in an entertaining way. That said the cast was awesome and gorgeous. The plot is a good one and there were plenty of laughs. The set was clever, with the orchestra center stage. It just didn’t compare it Six or Hamilton. Maybe older plays move slower than modern ones, like older movies often do.

    Seating time

by KG on 11/23/22The National Theatre - Washington

It should be mentioned somewhere that the lobby of the theatre opened one hour prior to the show's start, however seating was unavailable until 30 minutes prior to the show's start.

    Eh

by LR on 11/20/22The National Theatre - Washington

This is my third favorite musical of all time after Hamilton and Jersey Boys. I saw it in NYC and it just wasn’t the same. No bars for tango? No sparkly matching outfits for the finale? I dragged my family with me for their first time and I they were like eh to me. Excellent band but they took up too much stage. Dancers, singers, and band have the hardest Jobs ever and we appreciate your gifts!

    CHICAGO

by BRAD on 11/20/22The National Theatre - Washington

Wonderful performance!! Lacking a bit of the garnish of Fosse's choreography. But still a fascinating performance. National staff was very helpful and considerate. Great to be back attending good musicals.
