Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour

Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.

With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."

What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?

Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.

During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.

    Very entertaining

    by dragster_dad on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

Our group of 4 saw OYO, 9/9/22, at Ball arena in Denver, CO. This is the 2nd Cirque show we've seen in the past 6 months, the other being Mystere in Las Vegas. I would rate OYO as a very good show, but not great. OYO is an insect themed show with some great gymnastic type acts. It has things in common with Mystere such as a central character that makes appearances throughout the show and interacts with the audience. The acts included a trapeze style routine without the use of the traditional trapeze (awesome) as well as a spectacular trampoline segment and tumblers. Unlike Mystere which is at the Treasure Island theater, Ball arena seemed a little cramped for the OYO acts. The show production didn't seem as spectacular as Mystere. All in all, OYO is still worth seeing and I would recommend it for the family.

    Too many hosts

    by N on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

Rhythm of the night in Puerto Vallarta was far superior. There wasn’t a dull moment and during down time the host made certain to include the audience. With three hosts here there was more downtime and very little crowd involvement. That said, the talent was amazing, very skilled and at the height of their craft!

Not the best Cirque du Soliel show

by Sonia on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

Great acrobatics but lacked any substance. But to be fair it’s about insects so not much one can do with that. I would not recommend this show

Ovo did not lay an egg

by JB on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

“Ovo” was very entertaining. Colorful, tongue-in-cheek humor, high-wire acrobatics and truly enjoyable. Even the teenage grand kids enjoyed.

    Ovo - GREAT SHOW!

by MajorHavoc on 9/13/22Ball Arena - Denver

This was a great experience. The show was exciting and interesting. They had great merchandise too - lots of different stuff. They had shirts in all sizes - usually I have a hard time finding men's small at events. The Cirque du Soleil book was beautiful! We really enjoyed everything about it.

    Not the same

by Nicegirliam on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

It was a great show, but not the same as it is in the tent. Not as cozy and not the same feeling of sharing an experience. Will still always see a show.

    Least exiting show

by Rita Apple on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

I am a huge fan of Cirque Du Soleil, but OVO turned out to become my family's lease favorite one. We have a tradition to attend show that comes to Denver every summer/fall, and were looking forward to attend OVO, While the quality of performance was as great as usual, the music, the theme and scenario were nothing to remember or talk about, Very plain

    OVO

    by r on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

Loved the show! Highly recommended. Loved the venue, except, at the matinee (3:30) performance, no coffee, no iced tea, only water as the non-sugary, soda type drink. Parking expensive

    Je t'aime!

by La Fan du OVO Denver on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

Such a beautiful, creative, imaginative, breathtaking experience. The music was so engaging, I had to purchase the CD which I've been listening to, ever since. THANK YOU for bringing OVO to Denver.

    Awesome experience, except...

    by S. G. on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

Cirque de Soleil Ovo was amazing. The performers were awesome. The feats of strenghth are so cool to see. I loved the show. However, I purchased Row 1 seats but when we found our seats another row had been added in front of Row 1. THIS I was extremely unhappy about. I dont know if it was ticketmaster or Ball Arena who added the other row in front of row 1 but I purchased front row seats for a reason. This makes me extremely unsatisfied with the venue and/or ticketmaster.

    Bugging good!

by Steve on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

The story line was superb and wonderfully comical for the kids and for we adults as well. It was a magical experience we talked about over the weekend. When are you coming to Cincinnati?

    The best Family Afternoon

Show was amazing, kids friendly and ball arena had absolutely different more theater feel than for sport even.

    What a show!

by Lynnmill on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

I went to Cirque in 2000 when their Eau show opened in Vegas with the venue built just for Cirque. This show was sooooo much better! Cirque is always good but this was so clever and engaging and impressive. Just blew out minds away. We wanted to see all the scenes again! Nonstop entertaining and impressive. Colors, strength, flexibility - totally mind blowing.

    Unwelcome Back Massage

    by M on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

I literally had a kid kicking my seat the entire first half of the show, his parents and brother were just as bad. Then there was a group of at least 8 people who came in 27 minutes late and couldn’t find their seats. Not to mention, they had a new born with them in an entire mobile crib. I had an awful experience and I’m really sad to say that because of how highly I hold cirque in my heart. People just aren’t the same post-pandemic. We left at intermission and really felt like we wasted hard earned money just to go home annoyed and let down by our fellow patrons. Maybe an adults-only night in the future. Maybe a time limit on coming in late. Something to consider.

A long time fan of Cirque Du Soleil - Not so much any more

by PeterInDenver on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

I have enjoyed Cirque Du Soleil for over 20 years in Denver and other locations. Ovo was just a scaled down presentation of acts from other shows. The venue, Ball Arena, probably added to the disappointment. The music was recorded with some solo additions. For the price of the tickets I expected much more.

    Great acrobats

by CO girl on 9/12/22Ball Arena - Denver

Loved all the acts, but the “comedy” acts between were a but much. Went for the amazing trapeze, juggling, trampoline and such.
