The Submarines are a fun band to see live. They do change things up a little to keep it fresh. The Music Hall of Williamsburg is one of my favorite venues in the city. It's small and we had a perfect view from the 2nd floor balcony. I just wish it weren't so late on a tuesday night. They didn't go on until after 11. There were two opening bands and time in between to set up, but I've been to plenty of other concerts where they could schedule it so that it could be earlier.

    brilliant.

arrived at 8:47 pm. fairly empty standing room, maybe fifteen people aside from my friend and i. listened to the yellowbirds' half hour set- they're incredible to watch. they absolutely love to play music, and it shows. feet were starting to get tired, so headed down to the basement lounge for a bathroom and drink break. redbull a little overpriced at six bucks, but didn't want to get tired for the submarines. listened to the end of the pepper rabbit set from the lobby bar and shirt sale area. wrote a love note AND a letter bomb, put them in the box provided. can't wait to see those start to get posted by the band. also bought a poster print of the honeysuckle weeks album cover. guy working the table was so nice, and chatted with us about new york and the band. once pepper rabbit finished up, we headed back inside and moved toward the front for the best view. the room's occupancy had at least quintupled, but there was decent elbow room- not at all bad, for a standing room show. love that the submarines are their own roadies, setting up their own drum set, guitars, xylophone, and even some hanging sparkly stars and christmas-type lighting. really cute setup. came out and started their set with more enthusiasm than i've seen from a touring band in a long time. blake hazard was adorable, telling us stories about their album, the tour, new york, etc. john was pretty quiet, but got so into his music. LOVED when they played "you, me, and the bourgeousie"- my favorite song by them. "ivaloo" was also great. my friend loved that they closed their encore with "xavia"- her favorite. afterwards, went out into the lobby area. bought a yellowbirds cd fro sam cohen himself- so nice, so cute. definitely a great night.
