About The Capitol Steps

The Capitol Steps on Tour

The Capitol Steps offer welcome comic relief in the place that may need it the most: Washington, D.C. The long-standing comedy troupe has kept the nation's capital on its toes since December 1981, when a group of Senate staffers came together to lighten the mood at their annual Christmas party. Over the years, The Capitol Steps' cast has expanded, diversified and toured the country back and forth. In fact, there are now multiple casts — "the result of having large numbers of unemployed Hill staffers," as they put it. At home in Washington, they perform Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. On tour, they make stops at theaters, opera houses and other prestigious venues in cities from sea to shining sea. Expect silly skits, catchy songs, dead-on impressions and even some thought-provoking commentary, all in the name of fun — and the First Amendment, of course.

The Capitol Steps' motto says just about everything you need to know: "We put the MOCK in Democracy," the comedy team proudly proclaims. It all began in 1981 when Elaina Newport, Jim Aidala and the late Bill Strauss — three of Senator Charles Percy's staffers — put together a few skits and song parodies to share at their Christmas party. The performance was a success, and The Capitol Steps became Washington, D.C.'s go-to group for some much needed laughs. Since forming, the cast has brought on more former Capitol Hill staffers, along with many other theater and comedy veterans. They've recorded over 35 albums and have appeared on major network shows like Good Morning America, 20/20 and CNN's Inside Politics. Each year, they produce comedy specials for public radio, including "Politics Takes a Holiday," which airs every New Year's Eve and 4th of July. They've even performed for a handful of U.S. presidents. For the rest of us, The Capitol Steps share their latest comedy bits every Friday and Saturday night at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. Other cast members tour the country to help us all better digest the absurdities of our current state of affairs.

Do not miss the Capitol Steps!

by Iowan on 10/21/16Stephens Auditorium - Ames

In the midst of this depressing political season it was such a relief to laugh until I cried! I have seen this group twice in Iowa and twice at their home base in Washington, DC. Begun in the 80s with Capitol Hill employees of both political parties, these people are funny and have amazing singing voices as well. The more informed and knowledgeable about American history one is, the funnier they are. I was very surprised that it was not a packed house, particularly due to the present political climate.

    Laughed & laughed & laughed...

    by navyrnx26 on 10/19/16State Theatre - Portland

... until my jaw just ached. These folks do an outstanding job of capturing the looks and characteristics of each political person they portrayed. The writing and songs were equally hysterical. And, it was all VERY current with what's been happening in the Prez race in just the past few days. Cannot recommend it enough, especially if this election season has you depressed!

    Capitol Steps were exceptional!

by Countryclubgirl on 10/19/16State Theatre - Portland

It always amazes me how they keep their material so fresh and updated. I took my 15-year old grandson and he absolutely loved them. The singing was great also. A really nice touch was them greeting people in the foyer on the way out; great way to connect to their fans.

Capitol Steps reminded me of a high school play

Overacting and poor sound made the show hard to watch.

    Disappointed

by Bearded on 6/29/16Laurie Auditorium - San Antonio

I have seen them before in a more intimate setting which I think suits them better. I didn't feel the humor was all that clever or cutting edge. It seemed stale and many of the impersonations were less than convincing. Maybe they were tired that night or the political scene is just moving too quickly in the days of social media.

    Capitol Steps...Meh

by open4laughs on 1/13/16Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Aside from the sound system being poor and seats terribly cramped for anyone over 5' 6" tall, perhaps this show just pales in comparison to the real comedy that's coming out of the real people in public office these days. We actually left at intermission, as staying for what amounted to a middle school parody wasn't worth staying for.

Topical and as funny as ever. We saw them last March and about 1/3 of the material is new.

    The Capitol Steps were hilarious!

by AWBenkert on 6/3/15Town Hall - New York

As always, the Capitol Steps presented topical, piercing political humor at Town Hall. They are equal opportunity lampooners, satirizing everyone from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to Chris Christie and Ted Cruz. I only wish they appeared in New York more than once a year.

    Outstanding

by NYCPublicTeacher on 5/7/15Town Hall - New York

Fantastic show. If you don't like it, I truly feel bad for you. Nertastically wonderful, great renditions of popular songs with satirical lyrics. These former congressional aids are surprisingly good singers and great actors. You'll never see anything better than the heads of state of France, Germany, and Greece doing the Grease medley. Until, that is, Mr. Putin comes out and joins the party.

Just got out of surgery . . .

by NYfarmgirl on 5/7/15Town Hall - New York

Just got out of surgery after seeing Capitol Steps on May 4th . . . Split my gut! Laughing! I got the printout of the Lirty Dies and am sending copies to family and friends. Enjoy the challenge of reading it out loud. Impersonation of Obama was superb, and other highlights included Putin, Dick Cheney, and Hillary. And then there was "Sca...li...a. Scalia, Scalia!" with a hilarious Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

    Laugh Out Loud Funny

by Lady5iron on 5/7/15Town Hall - New York

Capitol Steps is just the funniest show on stage. If you like politcal satire, you will not be in the least bit disappointed. I laughed from the beginning to the end. I have seen them before and would be first in line to see them again! I only wish they would come to NYC more often!!

    Laugh all Night

by dlbky on 5/7/15Town Hall - New York

The Capitol Steps have a real hit with this year's show. My wife and I laughed through the entire show, which was rapid fire humor at the expense of all of our politicians in Washington and a few closer to home. The writing is excellent, the delivery smooth and the cast really enjoys skewering policitians, judges and other self-made vulnerable targets. If you can see this show, do so.
