The show was great but not the theatre space

by Kei on 2/7/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

Bought tickets at the left most space and spent the whole time regretting this. Was not able to see the main screen at all, the two side screens are so hard to see so I literally can’t read any text displayed. Otherwise the show was great, I just hate the theatre’s structure.

    Not Nier-ly Enough

by Mav on 2/7/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

Whether it's a fault of my own bias, expectations, or something else, I just could not bring myself to fully enjoy this performance. I really, REALLY, wanted to enjoy this concert, but it just felt lackluster as a whole; it felt as if the melancholy and heartfelt soul of Nier wasn't present in the orchestra. I showed up an hour and a half earlier, so I was able to get a t-shirt, a poster, and music box from the merch shop. I found it surprising that I spent over an hour and a half in line despite me being there so early, causing me to checkout only a few minutes before the concert began. The vinyl set, keychain, A2 and 2B (sorry 9S) plushies were sold out by the time I got there, among a few other items that I can't recall. I would say that the merch shop was slow, but literally thousands of people were in line, so I can't offer up suggestions as to how they would improve it. The lead vocals were phenomenal; Emi Evans and J'Nique Nicole really put their soul into their respective pieces in a performance befitting the ethereal and mystical lyrics of the chaos language. The choir, when it sang, harmonized very well with the rest of the orchestra. In my opinion, I couldn't feel the music. The percussion was very muted leaving me barely able to hear it let alone feel it. The choirs overall voice felt a little aged (though this is probably due to my consistent listening of the Nier OST, giving me a bias for a younger choir). Additionally, there was no solo male voice, so the song "Emil"didn't have any vocals, which I thought really took away much of the original feeling of the song. Maybe an orchestra just isn't my taste (which is my cope for not thoroughly enjoying the experience), but I believe that an orchestra isn't the best medium to accurately play Nier's best songs. This is because many of Nier's most popular songs are played with relatively few instruments/vocals and an orchestra's presence necessitates that most, if not all instruments be played, leading to a performance that is recognizable as a copy of their base songs, but having nowhere near the emotional pull that a few isolated instruments combined with complementary vocals could perform. Furthermore, my biggest complaint is that there were no vocals at all for "Shadowlord,"which is my personal favorite track from both games. I found it odd to substitute the choir for brass, especially considering how much archaic soul the choir from the OST gives the track. The visuals were not up to my expectations, which doesn't necessarily mean they were bad, but I felt they could've done a bit more to match the significance of the song being played and some generic elemental effects on screen. Of course, there were scenes/art pieces of the Nier world on screen as well at parts, which I did enjoy. I thought the short story between 9S and 2B was well-done as it formed somewhat of a thread between the songs. Overall, I didn't get the experience that I was expecting. Although the orchestra was beautiful, it didn't quite capture the existential melancholy-ness that the Nier OST perfectly encapsules. It was definitely an experience, and while I'm glad to say that I went for the purposes of saying I went, I don't think I'll be going again.

A Beautiful (Musical Medley of) Song

by Aarya C on 2/6/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

As a huge fan of Nier:Automata - I couldn't wait to attend this event! The performances were INCREDIBLE -- custom variants of some of the best pieces from Replicant and Automata. The singers, orchestra, everyone exuded so much energy and passion in their work. I especially loved the jazzy variant of Song of the Ancients -- 3 days after the concert, it still echoes in my head! The entire concert was arranged to tell a unique, deeply emotional story -- I cried a few times lol It was a fantastic experience to go and experience the magic of the Nier series in live performances, sitting amongst fans in various shades of cosplay too. My friend who went with me hadn't played the games -- but was converted to a fan after the first few songs. I can't wait to attend the next one whenever it is held!

    A truly amazing performance

by Connor on 2/6/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

There is a certain magic in the emotional resonance felt through the live performance of the music that has touched the soul. The Orchestral performance and the talent of the vocalists on stage perfectly encapsulated that feeling in the unique way Okabe-san's work does, the altered scenario presentation that accompanied the performance recontextualizes the feelings we associate with the tracks performed and that adds a fresh spin of heartwarming potential that makes this performance a unique and immensely worthwhile experience and experience live especially.

    Merchandise

by Arvin on 2/6/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

Needs more staff and bigger inventory for the items on sale, as people had to wait in line on one booth and lose out on things because of the small inventory. The orchestra and presentation were all great as expected.

    Amazing

by Nier’s biggest fan on 2/6/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

Seeing this live was something I’ll never forget! The orchestra was on top of their game and so was everyone else involved. I would’ve liked to see more variety in the merch however, like shirts and figures etc, and it seems like they never have enough of anything to meet the demand, despite how popular NieR is lol. Regardless, I’d absolutely love to experience this again, should they ever choose to do this again. There’s nothing else like this out there!

Epic. Sad merch sold out out of everything.

by Eddie on 2/6/24Rosemont Theatre - Rosemont

It’s hard to put into words how surreal and ethereal this event was. I came with a friend and we barely spoke afterwards because of how beautiful it all was. Of course, while we were chowing down on some 12AM IHop, we started raving about how amazing it was. Needless to say, the one thing we asked ourselves after the concert was “so what do we do now?”
