Whether it's a fault of my own bias, expectations, or something else, I just could not bring myself to fully enjoy this performance. I really, REALLY, wanted to enjoy this concert, but it just felt lackluster as a whole; it felt as if the melancholy and heartfelt soul of Nier wasn't present in the orchestra.
I showed up an hour and a half earlier, so I was able to get a t-shirt, a poster, and music box from the merch shop. I found it surprising that I spent over an hour and a half in line despite me being there so early, causing me to checkout only a few minutes before the concert began. The vinyl set, keychain, A2 and 2B (sorry 9S) plushies were sold out by the time I got there, among a few other items that I can't recall. I would say that the merch shop was slow, but literally thousands of people were in line, so I can't offer up suggestions as to how they would improve it.
The lead vocals were phenomenal; Emi Evans and J'Nique Nicole really put their soul into their respective pieces in a performance befitting the ethereal and mystical lyrics of the chaos language. The choir, when it sang, harmonized very well with the rest of the orchestra.
In my opinion, I couldn't feel the music. The percussion was very muted leaving me barely able to hear it let alone feel it. The choirs overall voice felt a little aged (though this is probably due to my consistent listening of the Nier OST, giving me a bias for a younger choir). Additionally, there was no solo male voice, so the song "Emil"didn't have any vocals, which I thought really took away much of the original feeling of the song. Maybe an orchestra just isn't my taste (which is my cope for not thoroughly enjoying the experience), but I believe that an orchestra isn't the best medium to accurately play Nier's best songs. This is because many of Nier's most popular songs are played with relatively few instruments/vocals and an orchestra's presence necessitates that most, if not all instruments be played, leading to a performance that is recognizable as a copy of their base songs, but having nowhere near the emotional pull that a few isolated instruments combined with complementary vocals could perform.
Furthermore, my biggest complaint is that there were no vocals at all for "Shadowlord,"which is my personal favorite track from both games. I found it odd to substitute the choir for brass, especially considering how much archaic soul the choir from the OST gives the track.
The visuals were not up to my expectations, which doesn't necessarily mean they were bad, but I felt they could've done a bit more to match the significance of the song being played and some generic elemental effects on screen. Of course, there were scenes/art pieces of the Nier world on screen as well at parts, which I did enjoy. I thought the short story between 9S and 2B was well-done as it formed somewhat of a thread between the songs.
Overall, I didn't get the experience that I was expecting. Although the orchestra was beautiful, it didn't quite capture the existential melancholy-ness that the Nier OST perfectly encapsules. It was definitely an experience, and while I'm glad to say that I went for the purposes of saying I went, I don't think I'll be going again.
