    Stokley stole the show

by TLTR on 4/27/24Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Overall a great show.. Stokley was the highlight with his voice and energy. The first half telling the story of his early life felt a bit long and clunky. The second half that highlighted the “Rick James” as we came to know him felt skipped and rushed at times.. but again Stokley’s energy and voice were key! If you are BIG Rick James fan -would recommend it

    Very Good show

    by Dann on 4/26/24

Rick James was such a complex extremely talented man. What I didn't know that I learn in the show was, he was original suppose to write a hit album fore Diana Ross but Ashford & Simpson did it instead. "Imagine the hits we missed"His approach with Barry Gordy was all or nothing. Thus, Tina Marie was produced instead. Legend. Didn't realize M.C. Hammer "Can't touch this is really a version of "Super Freak "by Rick James. Rick sued Motown records therefore, they retaliated, he could only write & produce for other performers and gave them their biggest hits. He barely missed being a victim of Charles Mansion killings @ Sharon Tates home, he stay home due to a migraine and a praying mother. He was introduced to drugs by promoters of Crosby, Stills & Nash while in Canada as a young man. This show worth seeing and although it's a bit cheeky you will not be able to remain in your seat. Kudos to his daughter & the producer & the talent line up for bringing truth, talent & history to the stage.

    Start with Stokely

by JAM on 4/26/24The Lyric - Baltimore

The play was very good, but could have been shorter. I would eliminate most of the story in the first half of the play. His beginning with CSN was interesting but too drawn out. Condense that part. The connection to the Tate murders should stay. The play really began for me when Stokely came out (You and I.) He was awesome! His singing was spectacular. He had Rick James' mannerisms and attitude down pat. You can't tell it all about anyone, but some of the stuff in the beginning was too much information. The voices of Tina Marie and Mrs. James were also fantastic! With some overhauling, this play could be Broadway bound.
