About

Guy Nantel on Tour

With all their absurdities and contradictions, our social and political worlds provide abundant targets for Guy Nantel. As one of Canada's sharpest wits and most skilled satirists, he's unafraid to take on any subject, whether performing onstage or asking questions to unsuspecting passersby in the "vox pop" segments that have made him an Internet celebrity. His courage to say what others are thinking is matched by his charm, a combination that makes Nantel as unique as he is reliably provocative.

It's no wonder audiences have been so loyal ever since the Montreal-born performer first came to wider attention as the winner of ‘La Course destination monde,' the televised documentary-filmmaking competition that aired in 1993-94 on Radio-Canada. That boost in profile led to his first solo show, ‘Par la porte d'en arrière.'

Among the many critics and tastemakers he impressed was comedy superstar Claude Meunier, who called Nantel "one of the most original artists of his generation." In 1997, Nantel won the "révélation" prize at Just for Laughs, inaugurating his long relationship with the festival.

Just for Laughs produced Nantel's next show, ‘Les vraies affaires,' and invited him to host its first gala outside Quebec in Nantes, France, in 2006. Like ‘Les vraies affaires,' Nantel's next solo shows ‘La Réforme Nantel' and ‘Corrupted' sold hundreds of thousands of tickets and earned multiple nominations and wins at the ADISQ and Olivier galas, including a Félix prize for Comedy Show of the Year in 2010.

Of course, Nantel's fame (and infamy) increased thanks to his activities beyond the stage. His appearances on TV programs such as ‘Il va y avoir du sport' and ‘Parlementeries' led to his "vox pop," viral videos in which he talks about current affairs with everyday Quebecois. These riffs on student strikes, election campaigns, and other topics of the day have attracted more than 5 million views on YouTube and Facebook.

In 2017, Nantel shared his singular take on the issues facing Quebec in two different yet equally pointed ways. In his first book, ‘Je me souviens... de rien,' Nantel tackles the big questions in his inimitable style. Many of the same themes come to the fore in ‘Nos droits et libertés,' another hit one-man show that's already thrilled the many fans who appreciate his eagerness to challenge assumptions and upend expectations, all while using the funniest possible means.

I didn't regret attending his show. I didn't know him as a comedian, he made fun of every situation that we are dealing with.
