BRUCE MCCULLOCH IN CONCERT:
Canadian comedian Bruce McCulloch has been making audiences laugh with his hilarious brand of dark comedy for more than three decades, drawing audiences in with cynical and side-splitting wit. He's famous for diversifying his sets with doses of live music, making his stand-up a uniquely entertaining treat for fans. McCulloch is a strikingly honest performer who doesn't shy away from discussing dark events in his life, but he always approaches them with a sense of whimsy and wonder. Accenting autobiographical stories with touches of genuine sincerity, Bruce McCulloch is a must-see comedian for ticket buyers looking for laughs.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Bruce McCulloch's big break came in 1984, when he and a group of other Canadian comedians formed the troupe The Kids In The Hall. Revered for its quirky and surreal sketches, the troupe landed a popular television show that aired during the late '80s and early '90s in Canada and the United States. The series spawned a movie, 1996's Brain Candy, as well as a 2010 reunion project titled Death Comes To Town, which McCulloch co-wrote, produced, and starred in. The multi-talented McCulloch has appeared in popular television shows including "Workaholics" and "Arrested Development", written for "Saturday Night Live", and directed the movies "Superstar", "Dog Park", and "Stealing Harvard". He also directed a music video for Tragically Hip's "My Music At Work", which earned him a Best Director award at the 2000 MuchMusic Video Awards. He has recorded two comedy albums, 1995's Shame-Based Man and 2002's Drunk Baby Project, both of which cast light on his impressive fusion of music and comedy. In 2014 McCulloch announced a new project for Rogers TV called "Young Drunk Punk", a show inspired by his own life slated to air in 2015.
I wasn’t familiar with Kids in the Hall, and though I was smiling during the show it didn’t make me laugh out loud. Though the audience in general enjoyed it. The seats were comfortable and I liked that I could drink a glass of wine with a lid on my cup. The parking was abundant and had no trouble finding a parking spot.
I've ascertained that this was a phenomenal show. I wasn't sure what to expect (I didn't read anything about it ahead of time), but this was a delightful mix of stand-up, songs, and poetry with just a little bit of "Live Laugh Love"schmaltz for balance. Bruce was high-energy, delightfully self-deprecating, and completely at ease on stage (as expected for a seasoned pro!) He was having fun so we were having fun. Definitely going to recommend this show to the Daves I know.
It was an incredible experience to see one of my favorite comedians live on stage.
As a longtime KITH and Bruce McCulloch fan, I was super excited but had no real expectations for the show. It was, of course, hilarious! It was also genuinely tender, and even profound. I can't say enough good things about Tales of Bravery and Stupidity!
Bruce did a straight set, no opener of some quality material for a savvy audience. His pacing was a bit rushed, the singing unmodulated and mostly clear. He engaged the crowd and had a delightful mix of subtle and overt gags. Oddly he sounded a bit like Scott a few times in his delivery, which wasn't a bad thing. With about ten more minutes of material, I think he could have slowed the overall tempo and taken a short break about halfway through. A fine show.
Bruce is the perfect combination of innocent kid comedy and pure evil. His stories are comfortingly cynical and his delivery is top notch. His show made my dark and cold heart sing.
Brilliant from beginning to end. Very weird and funny
Was excited for the show, but didn’t know if it would be weird, funny, or both. It was just hilarious. Found myself crying from laughter many times during the show. A woman next to us said at the beginning she had never heard of Bruce and was laughing hard throughout. Don’t miss it!
Bruce had me laughing, crying, and laughing again! The Wilbur had us packed in like sardines though…. And if you’re short, hope you don’t sit behind anyone tall.
