GOBLIN IN CONCERT:

Italian prog-rock legends Goblin have been making collective hairs stand on end for more than 40 years with their eerie cinematic compositions. Rising to fame in the '70s for their soundtrack contributions to Dario Argento films like Profondo Rosso and Suspiria, the band's creative instrumentation and mastery of suspense music set an industry standard that endures in horror filmmaking to this day. On the road for their first-ever US tour in 2013, Goblin thrilled fans with goosebump-inducing renditions of their most famous themes, building excitement for their live appearances in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After several initial incarnations in the early '70s, Goblin solidified their lineup and name to record the soundtrack of Dario Argento's 1975 cult-horror classic Profondo Rosso. Written and recorded in the span of a few days, the film's score was a surprise hit, selling over one million copies and topping Italian charts. They made their album debut a year later with Roller, before once again collaborating with Argento for the soundtrack of 1977's Suspiria. The band continued to release music throughout the late '70s and early '80s before going dark for nearly 20 years. After several reunion outings in the '00s, Goblin embarked on their first-ever North American tour with the bulk of their original lineup in 2013.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Seriously, these guys are legends! I have always wanted to see them, and they did not disappoint! They rocked really hard for a band who has been around for so many years, no sequencers, and they were tight!"

"Amazing...These guys were super tight and much heavier than I thought they would be. In Brooklyn we got to meet them, extremely nice guys, very humble."

"Waited more than two decades to see them...and it was totally worth it."

    Whose Idea Was This?

by Sculky on 5/27/24Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

First of all, I love the original Dawn of the Dead. Scared the hell out of me when I first saw it in a movie theatre...in a mall. Because of this movie, I came to love and appreciate horror films. I was stoked to see this again on the big screen and with the live music. The Orpheum Theatre was gorgeous and our seats were very comfy. Awesome Theatre! Once the movie began, that's when things went downhill. The music was too loud and drowned out the movie. It looked like Goblin was in charge of running the audio for the movie as well, which made no sense, especially when the movie froze and then lost audio for about 15 minutes and they were scrambling to try to fix it. They didn't even play all the music for the movie, just the same "theme"over and over. No disrespect to Goblin...it's just not what we paid for. The movie version that they showed wasn't the original theatrical release. It was an edited version of the theatrical, director's cut, and Italian version all in one. The title that they showed said "Zombi"and not Dawn of the Dead. I think that was so sad and disrespectful to what George A. Romero created (and no...I have nothing against Dario Argento). I don't know why, but they edited out things that should've been kept in, especially the zombie skull decapitation scene. I know Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero were in the audience and that was cool. I just wish they showed all the work that Tom Savini did. Did we stay for the whole thing? Yes we did. Considering how much we paid for the tickets, we might as well stick it out. I'm just glad we are not the only ones who walked out when Goblin did their own music at the end of the show and we did hear others wondering...whose idea was this?

    A Wonderful Evening

by ProgRockFan on 5/27/24Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I am a big fan of Goblin and of the horror movies for which they created soundtracks. Consequently this most recent tour is the best of both worlds for me. That is because the first 1/2 of the concert (90 minutes) the band played the music from the movie while the movie "Dawn of the Dead"played in the background. (It was amazing). The 2nd half of the show was the band playing songs from many other movies (for example Suspiria) while clips of those films or the music videos they created at the time played in the background. (It was amazing). The band was engaged, Claudio talked to the crowd quite a bit, they seemed liked they enjoyed it, and a total of 3 hours of music all adds up to one of the best concerts that I've seen in decades. See this if you have the chance.

    Disappointed

by RM on 5/27/24Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I was eagerly anticipating Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin performance of the Dawn Of The Dead soundtrack. Unbeknownst to me, the soundtrack was to be performed along with the movie which was not mentioned at the time of ticket sales. Ok, no big deal, right? Could be cool? Well, the downside is that the dialogue from the movie overpowered the live music and vise versa. The end result is that neither the music NOR movie could be enjoyed with the competing volumes between each other. Also, none of the compositions were played in their entirety. Only 2 min jolts of music during the entire 2 hour duration of the movie. I think most people came to hear Goblin, yes? It was certainly advertised as a Goblin concert. They could’ve had visuals from the movie and performed the soundtrack in its entirety which is what I thought it was going to be. Following the movie, Goblin DID perform 4-5 compositions in their entirety. They performed themes from Suspiria, Tenebre, Profondo Rosso and other classics. However, by that point, people were starting to leave from the exhaustion of having to sit through a two hour movie to hear an actual Goblin concert. Had I known the details upfront, I would’ve passed on this. I wanted to hear Goblin in full affect. If I wanted to watch the movie, I could do that at home. Not what I expected.

    Come on, dude it’s goblin!

by Jlally on 11/6/23Alex Theatre - Glendale

Goblin is amazing! This is the second time I’ve done an event where I’ve seen goblin play the live soundtrack to a film where the soundtrack was originally done by Simonetti. My friend and I had a great time. They usually pick cool old theaters I would definitely do it again.

    Giallo soundtrack come to life

    by Suedehead1969 on 10/31/23Alex Theatre - Glendale

Fantastic experience seeing and hearing Goblin play the soundtrack along with the movie. Frontman Simonetti has been at this since the 1970's and has made some memorable scores to match equally memorable horror films. Though there are several versions of Goblin touring sometimes concurrently, I feel this version is the one to watch, since Simonetti was a key composer in the group. Seeing the Argento/Bava 80's classic Demons on the big screen was a treat in itself, let alone getting to hear the craftsman behind the soundtrack play along live in person, supported by an incredibly talented and capable band. As an added treat, they followed up the film with a set of classics from their horror discography (Deep Red, Phenomena, Suspiria, etc.), and tossed in a couple of remarkably expanded and arranged covers of much-loved horror themes to Halloween and The Exorcist. All in all, a glorious way to spend a chilly October evening.
