About

Cleveland Monsters at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

The Cleveland Monsters are an Eastern Conference American Hockey League (AHL) team that's been an affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets since the 2015-2016 season. Coached by Mike Eaves since 2019, the team has won one Calder Cup and one conference championship during its existence.

The Monsters play at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, a downtown Cleveland venue built in 1994 that was known as the Quicken Loans Arena before being renamed after renovations were finished in 2019. The team's mascot is appropriate for a city located on a lake: He's a ferocious (but friendly) seagull named Sullivan C. Goal, or Sully for short. The Monsters specialize in high-energy, physical play that prepares players for the rigors of the NHL — a fact that's not lost on Cleveland fans, who pack the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on a regular basis for games.

Cleveland Monsters History

Cleveland has had multiple professional hockey franchises over the years, including an NHL team, the Cleveland Barons, from 1976 to 1978, and an AHL team of the same name from 2001 to 2006. The Cleveland Monsters began play in the 2007-2008 season, and were initially an affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche. The franchise was originally called the Lake Erie Monsters, a moniker nodding to local lore that the nearby body of water has a Loch Ness-like creature named Bessie living in it. In 2016, however, the team started calling itself just the Monsters.

The squad has appeared in the playoffs three times, most recently in the 2018-2019 season when they were swept in the second round by the Toronto Marlies. To date, the Monsters' most successful season was 2015-2016. Not only did they set a team record for points (with 97), but during their second-ever playoff appearance they won the Western Conference championship and took home the Calder Cup, the AHL's version of the Stanley Cup.

Good time after a 6 hour delay

by artoo840 on 4/14/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

We went to the Outdoor Classic and were so excited to be part of this first-ever event. It was a beautiful day and so beautiful they delayed the game by 6 hours. The big disappointment was the wait while they were clearly stalling and trying to figure out what to do. We sat more than 30 minutes past the start time until they started covering the ice and told us it would be delayed. The stadium gave us unlimited access so that was great, but there was no clear definition about parking (so we didn't know if they would charge us again if we left and came back). So Ticketmaster decided to call and let us know which would be a wonderful bonus except they called after the game had already started (really my phone rang when we settling in for the opening faceoff). The game itself was good and a fun experience. A bit cold but that's outdoor hockey for ya.

The game was delayed for 5 hours due to the weather.

by MAKE IT RIGHT on 3/8/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

The game was delayed 5 hours due to weather. I felt a refund or a voucher to another game should have been offered for the inconvenience. We traveled from out of town and part of our group had to get home so that was lost money.

Fans and team done a disservice ..

by D. J. on 3/8/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

Was not able to attend rescheduled game. Should never been a 1pm starting time to begin with!!! Logically well in advance should've been thought that early start could be problematic with natural weather conditions.. Missed opportunity to have a well attended event. Even though few weeks prior Ohio State vs Michigan hockey game had some issues with the ice. At least it was fixed and the starting time of 4pm was more appropriate. And they had 45,000 in the stands, 1pm Monsters game was embarrassingly sparse. And imagine the rescheduled 6pm start even less like us who could not stay another five or so hours more!

    Waste of time

by JK on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

Got there at 11:15 a.m. my hand froze just holding my cellphone to show my ticket. I was having a good time up until 1:00. Nice seeing the players warm up. Then the big announcement that the game would be played at 6:00 .That I could either stay or leave and come back. That was nice,I had tickets to the cavaliers game also so I left at 4:15 .They should of cancelled the game or gave each team a point . They could also have given fans who had to leave a free ticket to another game. Makes me think if I'm going to buy any more tickets. I was just getting to like watching hockey again.

So close but so far away

by Jon on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

I flew home from Texas to take my dad to this game. We love hockey, hockey outdoors is amazing… but this was a mess. The ice delay was silly, I went to the outdoor classic in LA and the ice was fine. This was poor planning. The real heartbreak was the game itself. Terrible passing, bad communication… it really just felt like they didn’t want to play that game and were half assing it. If the monsters do another outdoor game will I go? 100% yes. But I do expect a better experience next time
