About

Cleveland Monsters at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

The Cleveland Monsters are an Eastern Conference American Hockey League (AHL) team that's been an affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets since the 2015-2016 season. Coached by Mike Eaves since 2019, the team has won one Calder Cup and one conference championship during its existence.

The Monsters play at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, a downtown Cleveland venue built in 1994 that was known as the Quicken Loans Arena before being renamed after renovations were finished in 2019. The team's mascot is appropriate for a city located on a lake: He's a ferocious (but friendly) seagull named Sullivan C. Goal, or Sully for short. The Monsters specialize in high-energy, physical play that prepares players for the rigors of the NHL — a fact that's not lost on Cleveland fans, who pack the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on a regular basis for games.

Cleveland Monsters History

Cleveland has had multiple professional hockey franchises over the years, including an NHL team, the Cleveland Barons, from 1976 to 1978, and an AHL team of the same name from 2001 to 2006. The Cleveland Monsters began play in the 2007-2008 season, and were initially an affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche. The franchise was originally called the Lake Erie Monsters, a moniker nodding to local lore that the nearby body of water has a Loch Ness-like creature named Bessie living in it. In 2016, however, the team started calling itself just the Monsters.

The squad has appeared in the playoffs three times, most recently in the 2018-2019 season when they were swept in the second round by the Toronto Marlies. To date, the Monsters' most successful season was 2015-2016. Not only did they set a team record for points (with 97), but during their second-ever playoff appearance they won the Western Conference championship and took home the Calder Cup, the AHL's version of the Stanley Cup.

    Absurd 5 Hour Delay

by Hal on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

Schedule the event for 4 PM or later next time. A 5 hour delay is unheard of and to wait until the final hour to announce the delay was an even bigger inconvenience.

GREAT game and atmosphere, even better that Monsters won!

by Ke War on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

Unfortunate that, of all the cloudy Cleveland winter days, we had blistering sun that afternoon. But the delay was necessary for the sake of the ice and the unexpected night game was very cool. Hope they do this every year because really it was an awesome event

    Mistake by the lake.

by Wolf1960 on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

The venue was beautiful, the crowd enthusiastic and vibrant. If only the people running the show had any common sense. To have a hockey game in March at 1:00 in the afternoon only getting hotter by the minute and melting the ice. Waiting until 1:30 to make the announcement that the game was postponed until 6:00. People came from Toronto, Pittsburgh etc. only to be disappointed with their visit to Cleveland cause by a mismanaged event. I left the stands and as I walked out saw the ticket personnel still taking tickets for people to enter the venue, no one bothered to let them know the game had been postponed. A big mistake on the lake.

    Penalized for Delay of Game

by Slapped Shot on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

First, let me say I am a hockey fan and a season ticket holder with the Monsters. So I was really looking forward to this game. I purchased four $65 tickets plus parking in order to take my wife, son and daughter-in-law to the outdoor Monsters game for his birthday. We had great seats in the first row. We had to arrange a babysitter for the day as we were going to dinner immediately after the game. Around 2:00 pm we were told that the game was postponed until 6:00 pm. Well, that killed the day for us. We could not be gone that long due to the baby. That ended our fun time I had planned. I understand what happened but at the same time it was very disappointing and I would not invest in another outdoor game.

    Outdoor Hockey in the CLE

by EdThePole on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

This is how hockey should be played, OUTDOORS! Great atmosphere and crowd. The venue was not prepared for a time change. Several of the vendor stands near our section were open at the 1:00 PM start, but closed at the 6:00 PM start. Someone did not want to pay overtime!

    Disappointing

by A Mom on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

We were all excited to go to the game and got there and had great seats. 45 minutes after the game was supposed to start we were told it was postponed another almost 5 hours. Due to the extreme time change we weren't able to stay or come back and was told that we would get a refund for our tickets due to the inconvenience but have yet to get any notification about a refund or have anyone reach out regarding it even though that's what we were told at guest services. The lack of planning with having a 1:00 game for ice in March in Cleveland is the responsibility of the organizers and the game should have at least not started till 4:00 and if that was the case would have never bought tickets because we were unable to attend that late. My four kids were very disappointed that we weren't able to see the game as they are huge hockey fans and we're really looking forward to this as we bought our tickets months ago.

Cool event in a new atmosphere

by Billy on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

We are huge Monsters fans and the prospect of attending an outdoor game was extremely exciting. The accommodations were very nice and the event was well-planned. The game did get delayed very late but we were luckily able to come back for the second start time and enjoy the game. Despite the time change, Ticketmaster updated the tickets and we were able to leave and come back.

    Not good

by Unhappy customer on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

I know things happen but to make people sit out in the cold well past the start time just to say the game is postponed until 5 hours later sucks! We had plans later that night so could not go back. That’s a lot of money wasted on 4 tickets, parking, and unnecessary food and drink that we wouldn’t have bothered with if they had announced the game was getting postponed in a timely manner. Not to mention gas money and all the time wasted driving into Cleveland. We won’t be back.

    5 hour delay

by Max on 3/7/23FirstEnergy Stadium, Home of the Cleveland Browns - Cleveland

The game was delayed for 5 hours from 1pm to 6pm. We were there for 45 min before that was announced. Needless to say we left.
