    Slept through Carmen

by OperaSnob on 5/6/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

You missed the mark Denver. No set? I thought the recession was over. If I wanted to see community opera I would have done just that. We lost count of the disappointed that left in DROVES on opening night.

    Carmen? Meh.

by Anonymous on 5/6/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Music and voices were very beautiful, but with no stage sets it was nothing more than people standing around and singing right up into each others' faces for a long 3+ hours. However, the actor playing Don Jose did a wonderful job becoming increasingly unhinged as the story unfolded. His transformation from a respectable soldier to a spasmodic lunatic was well done.

    a five star experience

by NFDavis on 3/27/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The story, the singing, the stagging presenetation, the whole company interaction absolutely extraorindary. The voice range, purity and strength of Gilda, Rigoletto, the Duke, truely superb; every one in the caste preformed beautifully. The orchestra and outstanding conducting must be highly complimented. Lighting and stage displays very effective .

    A wonderful experience

by RomanceWriter on 3/26/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

We had what would be considered "nosebleed" tickets...on the top balcony, but that didn't keep us from thoroughly enjoying the performance. The music was spectacular, it was well-acted and I can't say enough about the scenery. Amazing! I loved the opera house and the captions. It was easy to follow along and enjoy the whole experience. Highly recommended!

    Rigoletto - fantastic!

by 49borg on 3/26/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The staging and costumes were beautiful. The singers were absolutely tops and in addition to the superb singing also did a great job of acting. With this performance, I will be back for more in the future.

    Rigoletto

by PattiLang on 3/26/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Rigoletto was excellent in every way. The voices were beautiful, the acting convincing. The sets were well-done. I was in the 2nd balcony (352) and could see the pit which I liked very much. The music and voices filled the space and I could hear every word. I think the chorus was very good. The costumes fit the parts. One criticism: I was emailed the Playbill "to save trees". But the copy was illegible because it was so blurry.

The performance of Rigoletto was as good as it get

by Chopin on 3/26/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

My wife and I were thrilled at the production of Rigoletto. The cast was uniformly wonderful, the conducting was superb, and the production was always appropriate, never overdone. We were so enthralled that we decided to become subscribers.

Wonderful production of Rigoletto by Opera Colorado. So appreciated the traditional staging. Felt very much like an "Italian opera"! Beautiful singing. Intimate venue.

    Rigoletto

by Anonymous on 3/25/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The opera Rigoletto was great!! However I was not happy that the parking lot in the Performing Arts Center was closed. We had to park in the convention center parking lot and driving in there was HORRIBLE!! I would have liked an advanced notice saying to look for an other parking option. Thanks, Tomy

    loved rigoletto

by newtotheopera on 3/25/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

I went to my first opera last year and got hooked. I'm not an expert but can tell by the performances that we are really lucky in Denver to have such accomplished artists perform here. I saw Il Trovatorre and Don Giovanni last year and was motivated to go to the National Opera in Washington DC to compare performances and sets. This performance of Rigoletto was by far the best of these 4 performances. The sets and performances were wonderful - the sets were much better than Il Travatorre (and to be honest I didn't care for the 50's style DG). A small admission - I watched an old Met performance of Rigoletto on You Tube featuring Pavarotti as the Duke - The tenor in this performance held his own against the great Pavarotti and was a much more enjoyable actor.to watch. I thought the singing of the part of Gilda was exceptional. We should all continue to support Opera Colorado.

Great venue and performance, worth the price!!

by j6745 on 3/24/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Fantastic performance!! The Ellie Caulkins Opera House is one of the nicest venues I have visited. May sound strange, but the seats can make or break a performance for me (The seating in the Boettcher Concert Hall for the symphony is terrible - that's another review). So great seats, and well balanced acoustics made three acts, comfortable. The sets were grand. I was amazed at the artistry and attention given to appearance from the audience's perspective. Voices and the orchestra were top notch. My only suggestion would be that subtitles be displayed in the stage area. They are conveniently in the seat headrest in front of each person, but to look down and read is a distraction.

    Outstanding Production

by Bill80124 on 3/24/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

I have seen many operas over the past few years--Opera Colorado, Santa Fe Opera, Central City Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. Opera Colorado's production of Rigoletto was one of the best I have seen. All of the lead singers were fabulous. Gordon Hawkins in the title role was perfect. Setting and costumes were outstanding.

Wonderful performance - hard to believe they went to all that effort (staging, rehearsald etc.) for only four perfoemances.

    Newbie to Colorado

by CarterOregon on 3/21/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

I've been spoiled by high-quality productions in the Northwest (Portland Opera) so was waiting to be less dazzled in Denver. Yet on my inaugural OC evening here, I was intrigued from the first (even before the curtain went up), to learn of next year's productions of durable time-tested repertoire. The current production features such solid talent as lyric tenor Barbera, baritone Hawkins, lyric soprano Gilmore, all bringing "world stage" profiles to our modest venue. Lucky for Denver! Completing the production was the superb direction of both Maestro Verdoni and memorable staging by Mr. Uzon. Worth the long drive from Ft. Collins! The future of opera in this country is nerve-wrackingly insecure, but with the commitment to first-rate productions such as this, Opera Colorado can be proud!
