Very good concert. The atmosphere was unique and memorable.
Cat Power was on point… charlyn’s vocals are so amazing and sung with such souls and the whole band was killer, as is the venue (the Orpheum). Also, the opener, Arsun, was compelling. Great night in DTLA.
Cat Power's rabid fan base doesn't just respond to her urgent, seen-it-all voice (recognizable in a hurricane), depth of dark feeling and incisive songwriting (at least two LPs of originals -- THE GREATEST and SUN -- are masterworks -- my fave records of their years). They worry for and about her. She's struggled with depression (misdiagnosed by some rubber neckers as alcoholism). The last time I saw her (some years' back at the El Rey) she seemed in the throes of a manic episode -- cutting songs off midway and dropping them to jog from the piano to the mic or to snatch a bouquet from eager fans.. Friday at the Orpheum was a far more cohesive, satisfying gig. With a stark, minimal three piece, (keyboards, drums and a guitarist who played sparse notes, more in tune to silences than noise) Power spent all night at the mic, showing off her Sinatra-caliber interpretative gifts. She (semi-recently) released a covers LP, for most a stop gap. Yet, ever since she re-invented The Stones "(I Can't Get No") Satisfaction" as radically as D.E.V.O. did, few artists can strip a standard to its chassis and own it like Power. Examples abounded Friday (including "These Days" the Nico standard by her then boy toy Jackson Browne and The Pogues' "A Pair of Brown Eyes."). I'd share a show photo except the lighting was oddly askew and she largely performed in the dark, befitting her trenchant, often downer vibe that goes down easy.
Set list was perfect...band was tight, and Cat was at her best.
Seeing Cat live was magical. So happy to have had the opportunity to experience her voice/musical genius in such an intimate setting.
Ms. Cat Power played the whole night in the dark. Never saw her face. The song choices were monotonous. Not enough melody, too much reverb that muddied up her voice. So, all in all, it was too esoteric, too distant, too inaccessible. I wasn’t expecting a pop show but I thought it was going to be a much better experience than it turned out to be.
Cat Power is a very talented artist with an amazing voice and her albums sound great. Live is another story . The concerts sound nothing like the albums . Chan has struggled live and nothing has changed in 2022 . She puts no effort into the vocal delivery and her shows end up sounding like one long song . She sings in her " I'm nervous up here and will mumble the songs in the dark in one flat key the whole show" voice. Her awesome version of Iggy Pops Endless Sea and Kitty Wells It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels were barely recognizable to her Covers release. Even Manhattan off of her 2012 Sun release was whispered, not sang . When I saw her that tour she had quite a different demeanor on stage . Maybe she needs more people on stage like that tour to feel more comfortable? Chan sang her version of Frank Sinatra's New York off of her incredible Jukebox release but again put no effort into making it sound the way she made it sound in the studio. Chans Jukebox covers release has an especially alive , intense vocal delivery to the songs even taking her own Metal Heart song to a whole new level. Its too bad Chan has not been able to get a hold of her stage fright and really give the people 100% live. The last time she was here for Wanderer this venue was sold out . This time there was a 1/3rd less and by the end of the show a quarter to a third left before it was over. In the words of Chans latest release this will be the last time " I will be seeing you " ...
I love Varsity theater. Intimate low key. Grant it it I’ve never seen cat power show before so I didn’t know what to expect but I guess she’s more favorable to dark tone lighting and keeping the same remaining throughout the whole show and vocals were a little mumbled…
Cat Power was just what I needed post-pandemic. Haven’t been to a show in a while and she was AMAZING! Great venue, great service, great experience🍻
What an amazing voice, one of the coolest timing of music I've experenced.
Saw her perform in Salt Lake City with Alanis Morissette and Garbage. She sang maybe four songs, couldn’t really hear her at all and it really seemed like she hated being their, had higher hopes.
I was extremely sad and disappointed at the overall performance. People come to live events for the energy, experience, and something unique to the performance beyond just listening to the songs. The first act was as depressing as could possibly be. The lady had a very nice voice, but no energy or excitement, or even engaging the crowd until the very last cover she sang (a Madonna cover) which finally got the audience going a bit. After that (and another 45 minutes of standing in place), Cat Power came on in complete darkness and did the entire show without light. It was extremely hard to hear her vocals (super muddy audio...) and she kept complaining to her sound guy that her mic was all wrong. Didn't anyone do a sound check? Singing into 2 mics didn't help matters at all (very odd move). I was particularly disappointed that she didn't engage the crowd, speak to us about the new songs, or otherwise even attempt to make it a fun night. After watching many other's in the front row pull the rip cord and just leave, we eventually did too. We were having a terrible time and we feel really let down. We've been to 2 other performances in the past 6 years and loved both of those, and this ... was... just ... awful. We'll not be going back for a 4th.
Sound and music way worse that recordings but with 0 interaction or on stage presence, the whole thing was one unending stream of sameness from opening singer to Cat’s “performance”. The only way to endure would be totally high and out of it on your own world trip. Just plain boring
It was so good. Enjoyed every moment of the show even I didn’t know most of her new songs
Webster Hall was Fine to stand in front of the stage, comfortable enough and stage the right size. Lighting was in our eyes badly for the first act--and the sound system was oddly terrible-unable to make out any words, unable to discern different instruments. How could this be--its a new sound system. For Cat Power, sound was much better, but not "great." Cat Power, she used the stage well, voice and show had high points, dreamy transporting beautiful self harmonies with two mics, and more, but she must have had some issues gong on, we never say her face in light, which was sad, we wanted to see her, she only performed 1hr 10 minutes, no encore, very little rapport. I won't lose my interest in her-am a devoted fan, but I and many were let down, way down. Is this to fall under artistry?, I am not sure.
Cat Power always puts on a great show. She did most of the tracks form the Wanderer album. There were some oldies thrown in too. About a 90-minute show. The only downside is the audio was pretty muddy sounding. The guys working the booth just had too much reverb and echo going on. Overall I am very glad I got to see Cat Power again!
What a shame, Cat Power is a rare and real talent and she presented a wonderful catalog of songs. Unfortunately the sound and lightning was very disappointing. The back lighting made it uncomfortable to look at the stage. I am not sure if the sound man could handle the double mic thing but the lyrics were inaudible.
Love her music and her voice...it's so soultry, sensual and romantic. Thank u Ms. Power!
Loved the show, the artist, the venue. Could have had abit more light on the stage but understand this is was intended to creat the mood. Drink prices are a bit steep. Probably would have made more money if there were a touch cheaper as people would come to the venue earlier verses hitting the bars down the street while waiting for the headliner. Loved the show and the arrangement of set list. Unpredictable and remixes just gave a new take on the artist
The sound from the stage was extremely quiet and the room was very loud with noise from everyone talking. I was disappointed in the length of the performance as well, it only ran an hour. I personally wished Cat Power and band would have performed more variety of songs.
