About

Rufus Wainwright, born in New York although holding both American and Canadian citizenship, brings together many varied genres including, pop, opera, baroque, rock, classical and ragtime into a unique style. He cites a wide variety of musical influences such as Judy Garland, Edith Piaf and Al Jolson, along with his many operatic favourites. As well as writing commercial pop music, Wainwright has also written operas and much music for soundtracks.

So far in his career, Rufus Wainwright has released 10 albums between 1998 and 2012. The debut album in 1998 was simply titled Rufus Wainwright. This first album was met with great critical acclaim. Rolling Stone magazine hailed Wainwright as the Best New Artist that year citing this album as one of the best of 1998. The album also won several awards from the Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards and a GLAAD Media Award. The nine albums which followed were: Poses in 2001, Want One in 2003, Want Two in 2004, Release the Stars and Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall both in 2007, Milwaukee at Last!!! in 2009, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu in 2010, House of Rufus in 2011 and Out of the Game in 2012.

Wainwright has collaborated and toured with many different artists, musicians and producers. His fifth album included performances with his sister and his mother Martha Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle, Richard Thompson, Neil Tennant, Julianna Raye, Joan Wasser, and Toby Dammit. He has toured with Sting, Guster, Ben Folds and Tori Amos as well as headlining his own tours. For his seventh album Wainwright teamed up with popular dance and pop producer Mark Ronson to generate a more accessible musical format without compromising his distinctive style - the result was Out of the Game.

  • Great show, great fun!

by Mbeliot on 9/18/25Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Rufus shows are always good. Add Patti Lupone, Darren Criss, and the incredible Sara Bareilles, along with many other talents, and this was a magnificent night. Town Hall is also a wonderful venue with a kind and helpful staff! I don’t suggest seats in the first few rows - it was hard to get a good look with the music stands. Also a little tough to get to a merch table! The fact that this was a fundraiser for the ACLU made it special - feeling good and doing good at at the same time. Fantastic!

  • Incredible talent

    by Amaki50 on 9/18/25Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Having only seen that Rufus Wainwright would be at Town Hall, I snapped up tickets early. I had no idea that such incredible talent would be included...Patti Lupone, Sara Bareilles, Darren Cross, and others. Rufus' music and lyrics of John Cassavetes' Opening Night were sensational. Sorry, for others, it was only for one night, but so glad I was there for it.

  • Intimate show, amazing music

by Carrie on 9/18/25Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the setting in how intimate it was. So much talent in one room. Loved that Sara B and Rufus performed their song at the end. It was amazing!

  • Outstanding in every way!

by Diane on 9/18/25Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Singers were all fabulous, including Elizabeth Teeter, newest one to the really big leagues!

  • Terrific, enjoyed it very much

by Jbcbear on 9/18/25Town Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the talent was superb, and the music very sophisticated and carried the story well which made it perfect that we were not distracted by a usually boring book to stretch it out for two and a half hours!!! Sharp, Witty, very good performances and a fund raiser too. Checked all the boxes:)

  • He’s been better

by Julie on 9/15/25Libbey Bowl - OjaiRating: 3 out of 5

I’ve seen Rufus quite a few times over the years, so I know he’s capable of excellence. The opinion of myself and the friends that I attended this event with were of the same opinion that we were not fans of his song selection nor of his excessive use of the guitar. Electing to feature so many songs from his first (and second) album, most of which the three of us were unfamiliar with, was not a great choice. Rufus has been blessed with an exceptional voice and is indisputably a piano virtuoso. Unlike many aging performers, Rufus has continued to have control of his voice. That is fortunate. But we are disappointed enough in the overall scope of this particular show that we will in future stick to listening to his recordings.

  • Magical

by Ni on 9/14/25Libbey Bowl - OjaiRating: 5 out of 5

My first time seeing Rupert Wainwright in person exceeded all of my expectations. The voice of an angel. Thank you for coming to such an intimate venue in Ojai. It was a magical experience.

  • Best show ever!

by Sue B on 12/29/23Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The 3 hours flew by! This show had everything from a Taylor Swift cover to opera. The Wainwright family is so talented and put on a great show. We’ll be back next year.
